What people love about Italy Tours
- Best of Italy (Summer)
We had the best time. Tour was fantastic and we were so happy we did it. Met some wonderful people and just going to all the different places was magical. Italy has a lot of wonderful places and the history behind each place is unbelievable.
- Sicilian Secrets - Tour of Sicily 8 days
We were in Sicily for a total of 8days, which were with Sicilian Secrets. Placido was our amazing tour guide. The tour was more than we could ever have expected. Always professional and always recommending the best places to visit on our own time. I can't wait to go back.
- Italy City Break - 5 Days
Being in Italy was amazing! Being able to see all the cities in 5 days was great! And the views were breathtaking. The hotels were nice and accommodating. The only downside were the meals that were provided as there was no selection and they were bland. Also our tour guide didn’t seem she was the most organized and didn’t explain things and left a lot of us confused or left to figure out important things on your own.
Most popular destinations in Italy
This region gives you Italy's most dramatic coastal scenery along the Amalfi Coast. You'll see clifftop villages that look out over the Mediterranean. Pompeii is the crown jewel for history lovers. You can take guided walks through Roman streets and homes that are remarkably well preserved. South Italy is different from many coastal destinations because it combines world-class archaeological sites with authentic food experiences. Think wood-fired Neapolitan pizza in Naples and fresh sfogliatella pastries in seaside towns. When you visit Capri, boat trips will show you hidden grottos and crystal-clear waters that are perfect for swimming. Local agriturismos offer cooking classes where you'll learn about regional specialties like limoncello and traditional pasta dishes. This gives you hands-on cultural experiences that go way beyond typical sightseeing.
See all South Italy toursLake Como shows off Italy's Alpine beauty. You can take boat trips to elegant Bellagio, which is framed by snow-capped peaks and historic villas. The Bernina Express gives you panoramic train travel through Swiss Alps territory. You'll see mountain views that most Italy itineraries miss completely. Wine lovers will discover intimate tastings at family-run Franciacorta vineyards. Here you'll learn production techniques that families have passed down through generations. Northern Italy is different from southern regions because it mixes Italian charm with Alpine influences. You can see this in both the architecture and the food. Cooking experiences focus on northern specialties. Local chefs will teach you authentic carbonara preparation and regional wine pairings in traditional settings.
See all Northern Italy toursRome and Florence anchor this region with world-famous art and architecture. You'll see everything from the Colosseum to Michelangelo's David. Cinque Terre offers coastal hiking between five colorful villages. This gives you Mediterranean views that are completely different from typical city tours. Tuscan wine country features cellar visits and tastings at family estates. Local vintners will share traditional winemaking methods with you. Central Italy is different from other regions because it balances major cultural sites with smaller medieval towns and countryside experiences. Cooking classes in Florence teach traditional techniques using local ingredients. Rome offers guided tours of ancient forums and underground catacombs that you can't access on your own.
See all Central Italy toursSicily really shines with three experiences that our travelers keep raving about. Mount Etna takes center stage - you can trek its volcanic paths and drop by the wineries that dot its slopes. The Aeolian Islands offer something special, especially when you sail past Panarea and watch Stromboli light up the night sky with its natural display. What makes Sicily particularly interesting is how different historical periods come together - one moment you're walking through ancient Greek temples and theaters in Syracuse, the next you're admiring Norman castles and baroque piazzas. Food is deeply woven into daily life here; our guests particularly enjoy joining local cooking classes, exploring morning markets and finding the best street food spots in old neighborhoods. We've found that April-May or September-October hit the sweet spot - the temperature's just right and you'll dodge the summer crowds, which means more genuine interactions with locals and easier visits to popular attractions.

Italy's waterways give you a completely different view of famous destinations. River cruises let you reach both well-known cities and quiet riverside towns in comfort. You'll float past Venice's historic neighborhoods without fighting the crowds on foot, then dock right in Milan's cultural center. River boats can navigate inland waterways to places that ocean cruises simply can't reach since they're stuck at coastal ports. This creates a nice, relaxed pace where you only unpack once.
See all River Cruise toursThe Dolomites offer incredible alpine adventures from cozy valley towns. Well-marked trails take you to dramatic limestone peaks and crystal-clear mountain lakes. You can choose gentle valley walks or challenging climbs to the top, including routes with viewpoints over 2,000 meters high. Southern Italy gives you something totally different along the Amalfi Coast. Here, clifftop paths connect old fishing villages as you walk through terraced lemon groves and climb ancient stone steps carved right into the dramatic coastline.
See all Hiking & Trekking toursTuscany's rolling hills are perfect for cycling. Quiet back roads connect hilltop medieval towns through cypress groves and vineyard landscapes. You'll follow ancient pilgrimage paths and farm tracks while avoiding busy highways. This gives you access to family wineries and olive estates that most visitors miss. The climbs are manageable and you're rewarded with long downhill stretches. Your stops include working farms where you can watch traditional cooking demonstrations and taste wines between riding segments.

Best places to start your Italy tour
Rome's your smartest bet for getting started. Most of our tours head out from there. Want to see northern Italy? Venice puts you right where you need to be. Going south? Naples is perfect since you can hop over to the Amalfi Coast without any hassle. Sicily-bound travelers should pick Catania for the east side or Palermo if you're exploring the west. You've got to book ahead when it gets busy. Smart travelers reserve their spots 3-4 months out for better deals and availability. Timing's everything too. Hit the big attractions early morning or late afternoon to dodge the crowds.

Italy itineraries by length

A week in Italy gives you time to really get to know one or two regions instead of rushing through tourist spots. If you're drawn to northern Italy, you can connect Milan's fashion districts with Venice's canals and spend a day or two exploring Lake Como's villa-dotted shores. Tuscany makes for another great week-long circuit. You'll blend Florence's Renaissance treasures with the cliff-top villages of Cinque Terre.

Ten days let you explore Italy's diverse regional personalities without feeling rushed. Southern routes work particularly well with this timeframe. You might start in Naples' vibrant streets, continue through the dramatic Amalfi coastline, and venture into Puglia to see those famous whitewashed trulli houses. Sicily is perfect for a circumnavigation tour over ten days. You'll discover ancient Greek theaters in Syracuse, learn about chocolate-making traditions in Modica, and explore volcanic wine regions near Etna.

Two weeks reveals Italy's full cultural range while still giving you depth in each place. You might start with Rome's ancient layers, then head into Tuscany's cypress-lined hills before continuing north through Portofino's colorful harbor and Lake Como's grand estates. The extended timeframe means you can participate in local traditions like the evening passeggiata strolls and visit artisan workshops. These comprehensive routes include lesser-visited destinations alongside the iconic sites everyone knows.
Traveler types and experiences
Italy tours work well for different types of travelers because they mix organized activities with free time to explore on your own. If you're traveling solo, you'll love Sicily's 8-day tours. These give you your own room but include group meals where you naturally meet other travelers. Couples tend to pick the more intimate Sicily trips that blend culture with romance. You'll cook with local families in their homes and enjoy private tastings at old estates. Younger travelers usually go for the Rome-to-Amalfi trips that mix history with adventure. You might hike up Vesuvius in the morning, then swim near Positano in the afternoon, or tackle the Path of Gods trail. Senior travelers appreciate the slower pace of 8 to 10-day tours. These keep you in centrally located hotels, handle all the logistics, and include guides who know when to share interesting stories and when to let you rest. No matter which tour you pick, you can expect cooking classes, boat trips to Capri, and cultural workshops that make your trip more meaningful.

What sets a guided Italy tour apart from independent travel?
Let's be real - guided Italy tours take the stress out of planning everything yourself so you can actually enjoy the experience. You've got expert guides showing you the hidden spots and sharing fascinating cultural insights that'll totally change how you see each destination. Take the Sicilian Secrets 8-day tour where guides like Placido and Ivan bring the stories to life or the Icons of Italy rail tour where Elisabetta and Milena make sure everything runs smoothly while sharing their deep local knowledge.
Which locally recognized cultural practices can visitors participate in, and where do they typically take place?
Jump into the passeggiata - that's the evening stroll where locals catch up and mingle in towns across Italy. You'll want to try the aperitivo scene too especially in Milan Florence and Venice where pre-dinner drinks and snacks are basically an art form. Bologna's the place to get your hands dirty learning authentic pasta-making from scratch. Over in Taormina you can join food tours sampling traditional Sicilian pastries and wines while Bologna's cooking classes let you dive deep into pasta-making techniques passed down through generations.
Which officially designated natural areas exist in Italy outside major urban centers, and what are the primary methods of accessing them?
Italy's natural spaces are absolutely stunning - take Cinque Terre National Park a UNESCO site where hiking trails connect five gorgeous coastal villages. Up in the Dolomites you'll find dramatic mountain landscapes with trails branching out from towns like Dobbiaco while Mt. Etna Europe's largest active volcano draws visitors for guided trips from Catania. The Cycle Tuscany tour lets you cruise through the Apuan Alps with an incredible downhill ride to Viareggio and if you're heading to the Dolomites the Hiking tour gets you up to Strudelkopf mountain by local bus for some seriously epic views.
Which local dishes are officially recognized in Italy as regional specialties, and where are they commonly served?
Italian food culture runs deep - you haven't really experienced Florence until you've had a proper Bistecca alla Fiorentina at a traditional trattoria. Northern Italy especially Venice and Milan is where you'll find amazing risotto dishes with endless variations. Along the Amalfi Coast the local trattorias serve up incredible Spaghetti alle Vongole right by the sea. Each region has its specialties like Florence's perfectly grilled T-bone steaks Venice's creamy risottos and those seaside restaurants along Amalfi where the pasta and seafood just hits different.
Which modes of public or private transport are most commonly used in Italy, and what are their main operating schedules or routes?
Getting around Italy is pretty straightforward - high-speed trains connect the major spots like Rome Florence Venice and Milan running frequently throughout the day. Local buses handle the smaller towns and villages with schedules posted at stops and private transfers fill in the gaps for those hard-to-reach places. Tours like the 5-day Italy City Break use deluxe coaches to zip between Assisi Siena and Florence while the Icons of Italy rail tour takes advantage of those fast trains to cover Venice Florence and Rome efficiently and comfortably.
