What people love about touring Italy solo
- 5-day Best of Italy: Rome, Florence & Venice
The tour was well planned with knowledgeable tour guides. However it will help to give pamphlets with brief information about the different towns and monuments, this willallow reading at leisure. The hotels were ok. The food was horrible, I expected to experience cuisine on the tour but it was substandard.
- Sicilian Secrets - Tour of Sicily 6 days
Positives: 1) The tour itself was very good, the Sicilian countryside was beautiful as were the towns and sites visited – Noto, Valley of the Temples, Monreale and Palatine Palace in particular. 2) The visit to the Florio Winery in Marsala was excellent and the lunch provided was very good. 3) The chocolate tasting was fun and informative and the lunch at Osteria Sapori Perduti was excellent – best meal we had. 4) The local experts (Angelo, Stefania, Lorenzo and Marta) for the visits to the archaeological sites and Palermo walking tour were great. Very well-informed and passionate about their subject. 5) Our guide Irene was well-informed, cheerful and always on hand to help. 6) Hotel breakfasts were all good with plenty of choices. 7) Overall, the tour was good value for money. Negatives: 1) The hotels used are probably all 4-star rated but not all rooms in each hotel were at that standard. Some were very basic and extremely small for 2 people with luggage e.g. the “economy room” at the Mercure in Palermo. Luckily our guide, Irene, was able to intercede and get us something better. 2) The hotel dinners were a little disappointing. No choices were offered and all predominantly seafood. Thankfully Irene was able to get the hotel to provide alternates for those who didn’t or couldn’t eat seafood. Also, it seemed a little cheap not to offer free water at dinner. 3) On 2 occasions the bus dropped us a ways from our hotel and we had to drag our luggage to and from the hotel. Once in heavy rain. Maybe the hotels used should be bus accessible? 4) Our first tour meeting was a little chaotic as it seemed 2 other groups were having their meetings as well. 5) We only realized after we left the tour that the “Tasting of Local Street Food” on day 5 in Palermo never happened. A general observation – not a positive or a negative -there is a lot of walking on this tour with uneven surfaces, steps and steep hills. The bus tends to drop you in a parking lot a fair distance from any of the attractions you are going to visit. This tour is probably not recommended for everyone “12 to 90”.
- Sicilian Secrets - Mini Tour of Sicily 5 days
We loved the Sicilian Secrets tour. Accommodation was great at most places and good at the lowest rated hotel. The places we. I sited we would not have been able to visit on our own especially the valley of the temples and the roman villa
What our customers ask about Italy Tours for Solo Travelers
Which Italian destinations are most recommended for solo guided tours?
The Amalfi Coast Tuscany and Sicily stand out as excellent choices for solo travelers. The compact towns of the Amalfi Coast such as Positano and Ravello provide easy-to-navigate streets with plenty of social spaces. Sicily's cities like Taormina and Syracuse welcome visitors with open arms as noted by a TourRadar traveler: "The family at Luna d'Agerola treated us like family." These regions work well for solo explorers thanks to their built-in social activities from Palermo food tours to Montepulciano wine tastings.
What is the typical single supplement cost for guided tours in Italy?
Single supplements for week-long Italy tours usually cost between USD 400-600. At the 4-star Hotel Ariston in Taormina guests pay USD 440 extra for a sea view single room. Some tour operators help avoid this cost by offering roommate matching services for travelers open to sharing accommodations.
What's the best time of year for solo travelers to visit Italy?
The sweet spots fall between April-May and September-October when crowds thin out and temperatures stay mild. Data shows these months attract the highest number of solo bookings at 35-40%. One TourRadar traveler explained: "Traveling in May meant comfortable temperatures for walking tours and easier socializing with the group without overwhelming summer crowds."
How much free time is typically available on Italy guided tours?
Tours generally provide 2-4 hours of independent exploration daily alongside scheduled activities. In Venice you might spend the morning with a guide at St. Mark's Square then get afternoon hours to wander the canals on your own. Reviews often mention this format creates "the perfect balance of group activities and personal exploration time."
What evening activities are typically arranged for solo travelers?
Evenings often feature shared meals cooking demonstrations and guided walks. Common activities include wine sessions in Tuscany gelato-making classes in Florence and dinner at local restaurants. As one TourRadar traveler noted: "The evening activities were perfect for socializing - from limoncello tasting in Sorrento to group dinners in Rome I never felt alone."
What's the typical group size on Italy guided tours?
Most small group tours accommodate between 8-20 people. The Sicily Food & Wine tour keeps things intimate with just 8 guests while the Amalfi Coast Walking tour typically hosts 12-15 participants. These smaller numbers make it easier for solo travelers to get to know their fellow tour members.
