What people love about Italy Tours in February
- Italian Scene (Winter)
quick response, well organized.
- Best of Italy (Winter)
Generally it's good. I am a solo traveller. On some accommodation I was given a single bed. Which I found cramp and very tight. Quite uncomfortable. As a solo traveller, we are charge with extra for accommodation. So I think we deserved something better if not the best.
- Best of Italy (Classic, Winter)
Coach tour? For us? We were riding elephants bareback and traversing Thai river rapids a few months ago. We had this vision of 80+ year olds knitting and singing WW2 songs that go on coach tours. Ha was I ever wrong. So very very wrong. I usually spend months of planning, organization, research, stress – oh yes plenty of stress – in getting a trip right but there is NO WAY I could have planned a 10 day trip of Italy with all that we did in the time we did it, the cost and you know quite frankly, it wouldn’t have been anywhere near the fun (or knowledge of what we were seeing) if we had done it independently. So it was with great trepidation we first met our fellow travellers. In five minutes or even less all fears were allayed and we were with a great group that also wanted to have a wonderful time from all walks of life and all ages. Oh we knew then we were in for a great holiday. And Fun. No arguing between us, stress or getting anywhere within X time. The tour of course took in the major sites, so I won’t wax lyrical which so many have already done and so much better than I could ever do, but they are outstanding and even more so when you actually know what you are seeing and experiencing. And Insight have that, well insight as to when the sights are quieter so basically we had “David” to ourselves (for example). FOOD: I love Italian food. My muffin top may have turned into a mushroom cloud but a happy one ☺ From our welcome meal we embraced authentic. Let’s face it Italians do authentic Italian food so well and of course I had a sense of obligation to try it all….just to see of course. Like I do every time Cadbury bring out a new chocolate! Pizza and your usual pastas that you know from home are not the same here. They are better, just don’t expect your pizza crust to be doughy or cheese filled (they are crispy, often wood fire baked), they are light on top but fresh, the freshest I have ever, not heavy at all (Good). Pasta is not quite the same either, the thick meaty sauce you typically have with lasagna here (in Australia) is not apparent there, but it is lighter there, and so soft. Gelato is magnificent!! HOTELS: All were very good. Some were modern, some were old, all were in great locations and all had bidets which sure would make going to the bathroom a LONG procedure I reckon. Really you are only in your rooms to shower, change and sleep, there is way too much fun and activity to be had to spend any time in any room, we loved that. I read in some reports that walls were thin, but for us we never heard a peep and we can’t sleep with any noise. Maybe we got lucky??? We did get used to packing very efficiently though (or quickly rather) as bags out at 7 was usual. OPTIONAL TOURS We signed up for most of those. Oh that Florence night was a definite cannot ever miss, we just had so much fun, and the fun continued into the night into the hotel lobby. Hehe we had some young people leave, what a turn around to usual, right! Two of our travel companions were talented singers and they kept us entertained also, it was a night we wished would never end. It was a full on trip doing the optional tours also but I figured I could rest at home, I didn’t want to miss a thing. All other tours were really interesting and I am glad we did them. It sure made the trip a full on one though, no rest but we are like that, we like to pack as much in as we could and this one did it. A couple of people on our tour had colds and missed a few optionals to rest, some even missed them to shop. It’s up to how you feel at the time. We only missed the Sorrento dinner (I am not really into fish much) and the Capri optional but our visit to Capri was cancelled anyway due to rough sea (something totally unforeseen and can happen – it was winter after all). We went to Naples instead and went through the museum that housed a lot more recovered from Pompei which was interesting, although I found Naples a little sad, Beautiful on top (lovely old buildings) but depressing down below (homeless and lots of garbage on the street and graffiti). COACH/DRIVER AND TD Nice coach, our driver did things I didn’t think were possible, those tiny narrow winding roads, I would be having kittens trying to navigate them in my little hatchback let alone a big coach, yet our driver Alfredo, cool and collected just navigated them like the professional he was. Our TD was a walking guidebook, sure saved me having to look anything up. Everything was effortless, anyone that has planned a trip knows how much work goes into getting it right let alone for 34 of us, the coordination was incredible. I was in awe and relieved also, we just sat back, relaxed and let it all happen. Ahhhh my idea of a perfect holiday, stress free but not missing a thing. OVERALL IMPRESSION The Best of Italy, that sums it up. Best of sights, sites, experiences, drivers, tour director, hotels and for us…fellow travellers. I cannot believe we fitted in so much in such a short space of time yet we didn’t feel over-rushed and hurried through major attractions. My report is based of course on our personal experience but we had the time of our lives. Our thoughts and attitude to coach holidays has changed immensely. You share the trip with a group of great and new friends which only enhances the experience. Just the two of us travelling independently doesn’t seem so appealing any more, oh I would love to go on more and more Insight Tours. They have a strong desire to give their guests the best they can give without compromise. That’s important. After all these trips are for so many a trip of a lifetime, you want it to be the best it can be and Insight do that and do it so well. PS – Things I would do differently: I would arrive in Rome two days before (or even one) to allow me time to get over jet lag and settle in. NOT buy from refreshment vans near major tourist attractions – a Gatorade cost me 6 euro….ask hotel staff and go to a small local supermarket to get water etc. Take one or two good outfits, I only took casual and wished I could have dressed up a bit more for a few of our nights out.
