What people love about The Dolomites Tours
- Hiking in the Dolomites
The tour was very nice with amazing views and Andy was a great guide. It would have been nice if the hotel we stayed at offered something warm for breakfast as well instead of just plain sandwitches, cereal and sweets.
- Classic Dolomites Hikes - Premium Adventure
This was an excellent holiday. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and assessed the ability of our group well. We had excellent weather and we felt we had achieved quite a few challenging walks by the end of the week. The hotel was good and we had an upgrade. The set menu food was disappointing with a lot of heavy carbohydrates eg cheese dumplings, ravioli, etc. The three or four of us with a vegetarian diet struggled but they did try. Our group was very sociable and we had a fun week. Alex, our guide, gave a few options for the free day. He also was very informative on walking skills especially on the rough terrain.
- 4 Days Dolomites Tour - from Milan
Amazing The tour was perfect for me. I am 73 and can’t walk a lot but we went on every road, every pass, every valley. Our fabulous guide, who loves this tour, made sure we could see all of its splendor. There were only 7 of us so the size was perfect and the van was comfortable too. My only suggestion is to upgrade the hotels, if you can.. One was too basic for me and the other had no air conditioning and the staff was unorganized. All in all, it was very good. I hope to use this company again
Travel The Dolomites your way
The Dolomites reveal their best sides when you can settle into a comfortable hotel and explore from there, rather than changing lodging every night. Our travelers consistently rate the Tre Cime di Lavaredo circuit as their standout day - you'll walk completely around these massive peaks, spotting old WWI bunkers and taking in mountain panoramas that stretch out in every direction. The Lake Braies trail covers 13km through meadows dotted with wildflowers and pine forests before opening up to those crystal-clear alpine waters that perfectly mirror the surrounding peaks. For a proper high-altitude experience, climbing Strudelkopf takes you up to 2,307m where you can see clear into Austria on good days - and yes, our guides know exactly which mountain hut serves the best apple strudel for your descent. The paths through Ampezzo Natural Park give you options: tackle some steeper sections or stick to gentler trails, with plenty of nice spots along the Boite River to stop for lunch. Our customers really value having that free day mid-week - some relax at their hotel's spa while others hop over to Bolzano to check out the fascinating Ice Man museum.
See all Hiking & Trekking toursThe cycling routes through the Dolomites offer something special for bike enthusiasts. The Innsbruck to Verona path is particularly clever - you start in the Alps and gradually roll down through landscapes that become more Mediterranean with each passing mile. Our cyclists really love the section from Brenner Pass to Brixen, where the bike paths follow old trade routes. Multi-day trips include stops at traditional wineries in Auer and local cheese makers in South Tyrol. The routes mix easy orchard descents with optional climbs to scenic passes, and with well-marked paths and support vehicles nearby, you can focus on enjoying the ride instead of worrying about the details.
See all Bicycle toursOur Dolomites exploration tours blend serious mountain hiking with authentic Italian experiences. The 4-day trips from Milan take you through Verona's historic streets before heading into the high country, and our customers really appreciate how the local guides know exactly where to find the quieter trails around Lake Misurina. If you've got more time, the 8-day routes let you tackle the challenging Tre Cime di Lavaredo circuit and also discover peaceful spots in Val Pusteria and Val Badia. What makes these routes special is how they mix up the physical side with local culture - you might spend one day learning traditional speck smoking techniques in a mountain refuge and the next wandering through Merano's medieval quarter.

If you're looking at winter options, Exodus stands out with their snowshoeing trips, particularly the one based at Hotel Adler. Our customers who've stayed there love coming back to the spa after a day in the snow, and the food gets lots of praise too. Both Explore and Exodus guides earn high marks from our travelers for knowing the trails inside out and adapting the pace to suit different hiking abilities. Intrepid Travel puts together solid itineraries at good prices, though some of our travelers have mentioned they'd like more actual hiking time built into their Dolomites program. That said, their small group approach works well for getting to know fellow travelers and moving efficiently between locations. The guides from all three companies really understand the region's geology, flora and local culture - they're quick to point out things you might miss on your own, from rare Alpine flowers to the best spots for traditional mountain cuisine and regional wines.

Small Group
16 tours in The DolomitesThese Dolomites small-group tours blend guided hiking with authentic cultural moments, and our customers consistently tell us how much they appreciate the balance. The most popular 8-day tour starts in Dobbiaco, taking you along carefully selected paths like the Tre Cime di Lavaredo circuit and gentle walks by Lake Braies, with daily distances kept between 11-14km. Guests especially value their stay at one welcoming, family-run hotel throughout the trip, which gives them a chance to connect with fellow hikers over traditional Tyrolean meals. There's also an excellent option that begins in Venice with 5 days of varied activities, combining hikes to Monte Elmo at 2,434m and visits to local cheese producers, wine estates and other regional highlights. The intimate group size lets guides adapt the pace as needed, whether you're crossing mountain passes into Austria or discovering old WWI trenches on Monte Piano. For those seeking a more demanding experience, we offer a 7-day trek covering up to 25km daily between mountain refuges - though you should know these authentic alpine huts offer basic amenities and shared sleeping quarters.
Private / Personalized
29 tours in The DolomitesIf you want more control over your schedule, our private tours really deliver in the Dolomites. The Innsbruck-Verona cycling route comes with a handy route app that helps you navigate while keeping your independence - our cyclists particularly like this balance. Many travelers choose the hiking focus around Cortina, using private transfers to reach trailheads like Passo Tre Croci. You can modify daily routes based on how you feel; maybe do the full Lake Sorapis circuit one day or take it easier with shorter walks near the Averau refuge. What makes these tours work so well is the freedom to spend time where you want, whether that's getting those perfect photos of Tre Cime peaks, exploring more of Bolzano's old town or just taking an extra coffee break.
Top The Dolomites travel itineraries to fit your plans

The week-long Dolomites tours blend serious hiking with comfortable lodging, typically starting from Cortina d'Ampezzo. One popular route follows wartime paths near the Tofano peaks where you'll discover old bunkers and mountain shelters - real pieces of history right on the trail. Our customers consistently note how well the guides manage safety, though they remind newcomers to prepare for some demanding days that can stretch up to 25km. For cyclists, there's a solid 7-day option from Trento that takes on famous mountain passes. The highlight is the Sella Ronda loop - a proper mountain challenge connecting the Gardena, Campolongo, Pordoi and also Sella passes. You're looking at 66km of riding with about 2000m climbing - it's the real deal for serious riders. The Tre Cime di Lavaredo area offers varied hiking that our travelers really like. You can mix tough climbs with easier valley walks, adjusting each day's difficulty as you go. The routes pass clear mountain lakes like Sorapis and Misurina, with some sections equipped with cables and rails for safety. You'll stay in both valley hotels and mountain refuges - our customers mention these can be quite basic, with shared dorms and sometimes unpredictable hot water, but they're genuine mountain experiences.

Demographics
The Dolomites hiking tours around Dobbiaco and Cortina d'Ampezzo work really well for people traveling on their own. There's this lovely walk from Lake Braies that winds through valleys full of wildflowers up to Putzalm hut - it's where our solo guests naturally connect during coffee breaks. You can choose your daily challenge level; join others for the full Tre Cime circuit or take it easier with walks around Lake Misurina. What our single travelers mention most often is how much they enjoy staying at one hotel throughout, getting to know both the local hosts and other guests while sharing traditional Tyrolean dinners.
The multi-sport tours hit exactly what young adults want in the mountains. From Bolzano, you'll cycle about 60km daily through wine country and along the Etsch river valley - pushing up mountain passes then cruising down to cool off with a swim in the lakes. A lot of our younger travelers mix it up by adding via ferrata climbing between hiking days. The Cortina tours nail that balance of physical challenge and social time, with treks up to mountain huts where you'll share local food, drinks and also stories with new friends from your group.
The 4-day tours from Milan really suit our senior travelers, combining easy travel with great mountain views. A modern minibus means you can reach impressive viewpoints without difficult hiking - something our older guests consistently praise. The route takes you through Verona's historic center, then winds into the Dolomites with stops at Lake Misurina, Cortina d'Ampezzo and also the medieval towns of Merano and Bolzano. Our guides have picked out excellent local restaurants and know exactly when to schedule free time. Our senior travelers often tell us they love how the tour balances group activities with time to explore independently.

Best time to visit The Dolomites
- Spring 2026
As snow melts and flowers start popping up, spring opens possibilities for cycling and early hiking. The bike path from Merano to Lake Garda follows old wine roads past orchards in bloom and authentic South Tyrolean villages. Our cyclists especially like riding through Val Pusteria - it's mostly downhill and you get amazing views of snow-topped peaks perfect for photos. If walking's more your style, the trails around Dobbiaco become accessible bit by bit as spring moves along, starting with lower routes like the Lake Braies loop and valleys dotted with Alpine blooms.
- Summer 2026
Summer means full access to high trails and our most diverse hiking options. From Dobbiaco, you can tackle different terrain each day - maybe climbing through meadows to reach Putzalm hut, then walking the ridge between Italy and Austria on Mount Elmo the next. Our guides are great at adjusting daily routes based on weather and how the group's feeling. If you prefer going solo, self-guided trips come with detailed route notes so you can move at your own speed. Multi-day tours include rest days for cycling, checking out Bolzano's archaeological museum or exploring WWI trenches and bunkers on Monte Piano.

What Makes The Dolomites So Special?
You've got to see these mountains to believe them - eighteen peaks shooting up past 3000m with dramatic walls and valleys carved from ancient limestone. It's pretty amazing to think you're walking through what used to be coral reefs millions of years ago. When UNESCO made this a World Heritage Site in 2009 they really got it right the landscape tells an incredible story of Earth's history.
What's The Local Culture Like?
The cool thing about the Dolomites is you'll hear three languages - Italian German and this fascinating ancient language called Ladin. If you're exploring Val Badia or Val Gardena you can really dive into local life with traditional music amazing food and beautiful crafts. The mountain huts or refugios as they call them are fantastic places to experience real alpine hospitality. You've got to try the local cheese especially at places like the Dobbiaco cooperative that's been making it since 1882 - our Day 3 cheese tasting on the Hiking tour is always a highlight.
Can I Get Around Without Driving?
Getting around is actually pretty straightforward the bus network connects all the major spots and hiking trails really well. The cable cars are brilliant for reaching those high-altitude views like Strudelkopf without wearing yourself out climbing. If you're into cycling there are some fantastic dedicated paths including this gorgeous route through South Tyrol's vineyards that's part of our 10-day Cycling Plus! Sella Ronda tour.
When Should I Plan My Hiking Trip?
Summer's your best bet from June through September when the trails are clear and temperatures are just right. The alpine meadows burst with wildflowers it's absolutely beautiful. Just remember mountain weather can change quickly so pack smart with layers. Our guide Matilda knows this well - she once had heavy snow during a summer tour while leading the 4 Days Dolomites trip from Milan.
What Are Some Hidden Gems Beyond Tre Cime?
While Tre Cime is stunning and definitely worth seeing there's so much more to explore. Strudelkopf's summit gives you these incredible panoramic views and on clear days you can even spot Tre Cime in the distance - it's a highlight of Day 2 on our hiking tour. The Marmolada is actually the highest peak in the whole range and Monte Elmo offers these amazing views stretching all the way to Austria. You can experience Monte Elmo yourself on Day 7 of our hiking tour taking the cable car up for some truly spectacular views.
