What people love about Iceland Tours in October
- Best of Iceland
Fifa made the tour GREAT. She was entertaining, flexible, helpful, positive, informative and kept a great pace. She added a few stops and made sure that everyone was able to experience the activity they were most looking forward to. Also, we were very lucky, for the most part the weather really cooperated and all the waterfalls, glaciers, mountains, beaches, and all of the other sights were more impressive in person, than in pictures. Plus the Puffins arrived right before we did!!
- 5 Days Land of Northern Lights
We had the upgrade and the Hotel was not bad there were a few minor issues with the first room, Plaza Central, which had a slightly warn carpet. The Breakfasts in the two hotels were very good were presented and offered a very wide choice. the staff were all very friendly and all spoke excellent English. The Tour was well organised and our tour guide, knew her business and the Bus always seemed to arrive at the various, sites when there were few other buses there. This did add to the enjoyment as we were never, rushed or crowded. Going early on the day prior to the Tour starting and leaving late on the day after allowed, us to have a good look around Reykjavik., We missed the Lights themselves but we may return again.
- Northern Lights Escape
We had a fantastic trip and saw all Iceland had to offer in terms of weather conditions in winter. Our guide, Havar, was tested on the first day as we were storm bound in Reykjavic until late afternoon. Nevertheless he rose to the occasion with an extended tour of the city! Despite losing the first day's itinerary Havar worked hard to ensure that we fitted in everything that we had missed during the following two days. He was a star! Accommodation was basic but clean and comfortable, all we needed. The transport in the minibus was fine and again, Havar put considerable effort into driving us safely despite the wind and snow and quite long shifts at the wheel. The winter scenery was stunning in many places. The weather could change very quickly and we enjoyed two full days of sunshine as well as the storms, and a clear sky on our last night with Havar gave us a great chance to see (and attempt to photograph) the Northern Lights, he managed to find us good vantage points away from the crowds. Thanks Intrepid, and especially thanks Havar.
What our customers ask about Iceland Tours in October 2025
What are the best natural phenomena to see in Iceland during October?
October in Iceland brings prime viewing conditions for the Northern Lights especially near Akureyri and Lake Myvatn where dark skies create perfect viewing conditions. The month also reveals dramatic glacier formations at Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and newly accessible ice caves at Vatnajökull National Park. A TourRadar traveler shared: "watching the lights constantly change in intensity color and movement in the vast starry space with the gentle lull of the ocean beneath is a thrilling unique experience."
What are the daylight hours like in Iceland during October?
Daylight hours in Iceland shift notably during October dropping from 11 hours early in the month to about 8 hours by the end. This balance of light and dark works well for visitors planning to see both daytime attractions like Thingvellir National Park and nighttime Northern Lights displays. The shorter days are particularly noticeable around Akureyri and the South Coast where the extended darkness creates better conditions for aurora viewing.
What are the best day trips from Reykjavik in October?
The Golden Circle route stands out as a key day trip featuring Thingvellir National Park Geysir and Gullfoss waterfall. The South Coast offers rewarding excursions to Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls even in autumn conditions. A TourRadar guest at Fosshotel Baron noted: "The Golden Circle tour provided an excellent overview of Iceland's diverse landscapes even in October conditions."
What type of accommodation is recommended for October visits?
Properties like Fosshotel Núpar and Hotel Hamar prove practical for October stays. Their location away from urban light pollution creates good Northern Lights viewing conditions while amenities such as hot tubs and heated floors add comfort during cool nights. A TourRadar guest reported: "The Fosshotel Núpar is ideally located in one of Iceland's most glorious landscapes surrounded by lava fields with spectacular views of Vatnajökull glacier."
What are the chances of seeing the Northern Lights in Iceland during October?
Historical data shows a 74% likelihood of seeing the Northern Lights during October. Hotel Stracta in Hella with its extensive dark grounds serves as a reliable viewing spot. Other prime locations include Thingvellir National Park and the rural areas near Kirkjubæjarklaustur where the auroras often appear above Vatnajökull glacier against a clear dark sky.
What are the best ice cave and glacier experiences available in October?
October signals the start of ice cave season as new formations become accessible to visitors. Crystal Ice Cave tours begin operating near Vatnajökull glacier while glacier hiking on Sólheimajökull takes on a different character with fresh snow. Fosshotel Nupar serves as a convenient base for these glacier adventures. As one TourRadar visitor observed: "The October timing was perfect for ice cave exploration - not too cold but the ice formations were already spectacular."
