What people love about Iceland Tours in April
- Best of Iceland
Great tour! Iceland is a beautiful country.
- 5 Days Land of Northern Lights
The itinerary was perfct for a short trip and the bus and guide were excellent. Bus was comfortable and guide was interactive and congenial with vast knowledge of Iceland. We did not see the Northern Lights due to cloud cover every night but we accepted that possibility before we departed for the trip. The Klettur Hotel in Reykjavik was great and in a super location close to shopping and sight seeing in the city. This is an upgrade hotel and worth the price. The upgrade hotel in Hella was the Stracta. This hotel was not worth the upgrade. The service was poor, the food was terrible and very limited selection. The standard hotel, Arhus Cabins, was described as "rustic" but all our group siad they were fine and 17 of the 19 people in our group stayed there, along with our guide, and that is the location the Northern Lights presentation was provided and where the group viewing was provided. This was about a 10-15 minute walk from the Stracta. If it were possible, we would stay with the upgrade in Reykjavik (Klettur) but not upgrade in Hella and stay with the rest of our group at the Cabins. Weather was challenging with strong north winds every day except our last day in Reykjavik and it rained/sleeted/snowed most days. Overall the trip was great but a few small changes would have made it better.
- Iceland Discovery
Iceland was all I imagined it to be - and more! The tour was operated by funtravel.is. Our guide took us to all the touristy places but also made sure to show us lots of hidden gems. On most days we had lots of time to explore, although some days felt a bit rushed. We stayed in guesthouses and on farms (www.farmholidays.is) - mostly in the middle of nowhere. Expect shared bathrooms.
What our customers ask about Iceland Tours in April 2026
What are the must-see attractions in Iceland during April?
April provides an ideal balance for seeing Iceland's natural wonders. The Golden Circle route includes three essential stops: Thingvellir National Park with its tectonic rifts Geysir's bubbling hot springs and the powerful Gullfoss waterfall. Along the South Coast dramatic waterfalls like Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss offer excellent photo opportunities with fewer tourists than peak season. The Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon where blue icebergs float serenely is particularly photogenic in April's clear light. A TourRadar traveler noted: "We got to see the ice caves waterfalls and even caught the Northern Lights in early April - the timing was perfect for experiencing all of Iceland's highlights without summer crowds."
Can you still see the Northern Lights in Iceland during April?
The Northern Lights remain visible in April though viewing opportunities become more limited as days grow longer. For the best chances head away from Reykjavik's light pollution to darker locations such as Kirkjubaejarklaustur or Höfn. Clear skies and patience are essential for spotting the aurora. A TourRadar traveler shares: "We were lucky to catch the aurora near Hotel Höfn during our April trip - the skies were still dark enough after 9 PM."
How many hours of daylight are there in Iceland during April?
Daylight hours in April increase dramatically starting at 13 hours early in the month and reaching nearly 16 hours by month's end. This extended daylight provides ample time to explore outdoor attractions like Thingvellir National Park and the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon without rushing. A TourRadar customer notes: "The extended daylight allowed us to fit in more sightseeing especially around the Golden Circle."
What special activities are available in Iceland during April?
April's unique conditions allow for diverse activities including guided tours of the Katla Ice Cave whale watching expeditions from Akureyri harbor and glacier hikes at Sólheimajökull. The Vatnshellir cave near Snæfellsnes Peninsula offers underground exploration while late-season Northern Lights viewing remains possible. A TourRadar traveler noted: "The glacier hike gives you amazing scenery through crevasses and jagged ridges incredible surroundings around the glacier and get up close with the blue ice."
What are the best activities to do in Iceland during April?
The moderate temperatures of April create perfect conditions for glacier hiking at Sólheimajökull ice cave exploration near Vatnajökull and visits to Golden Circle landmarks including Gullfoss and Geysir. Using Reykjavik's Fosshotel Baron as a base enables easy access to day trips throughout the region. According to TourRadar reviews: "April was perfect for combining ice cave tours with waterfall visits - we had Skógafoss almost to ourselves in the morning."
What wildlife can be seen in Iceland during April?
April marks the return of various migratory birds while seals frequent the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and whales begin their seasonal migration. The Snæfellsnes Peninsula offers excellent spots for bird enthusiasts to observe native and migrating species. One TourRadar traveler shares: "We saw plenty of seals at Diamond Beach and the first puffins arriving at Dyrhólaey in mid-April."
