Martina was an excellent tour guide. She really cares about the tourist, and the tour itself. We had a little delay because of the wind, but we were still able to see everything, she made it work. What a fantastic person she is ,we were lucky to have her as our tour guide.

We just completed our Northern Lights tour with Martina & Franz from GJ Travel on 24 October. We cannot emphasise enough, not just how good the tour was, but Martina & Franz are THE BEST at what they do. The passion they have for Iceland is infectious and having completed our tour I fully understand why. Such a beautiful country that cannot be captured on a phone because my eyes were seeing so much more beauty than the lens could capture and it captured a lot. Additionally, the administration of GJ (we booked direct) was so great to deal with, as we were able to arrange everything and make necessary changes with such ease. Also, being 6’2” or 188cm, the coach was spacious and uber comfortable which is always a significant concern that was immediately resolved upon boarding. Seriously, the ultimate experience from start and to finish in that magnificent Blue Lagoon (tourist trap or not) was a wonderful way to end what was a magical experience. So thank you thank you thank you. We will certainly be recommending you to friends, family and anyone who will listen.

Martina and Franz were the best tour guides ever! GJ Travels should definitely put them together more often. They were very well organized and super super friendly. Martina was also full of information on Iceland and its history. We had a windstorm where the day was almost cancelled, but Martina was able to work with it and still let us do everything that was on the itinerary. Even on the unplanned weather event everything still went perfectly. I fell in love with Iceland on this trip!

My Iceland experience through GJ Travel was purely sublime. The itinerary was excellent and Andres, our guide, was informative. Iceland truly deserves the reputation of being the Land of Fire and Ice. I encountered the ice first hand and saw the effects of the fire part throughout the places we have visited. Seeing waterfalls, lava caves, ice caves, lava fields and volcanoes make up for a truly remarkable Icelandic experience. The Icelandic people I have met were all lovely. They speak English fluently. The passport control officer even wished me a happy birthday. Andres, our guide, educated us of every volcano, mountain, lava field, lakes, shores and beaches, waterfalls, practically on everything that we passed by. He regaled us of stories of the Yule lads and trolls, of elves, of the Vikings, of sagas and folk lores, and of Iceland’s rich literature. He must have been a teacher in another life (I did hear him mention, “my students”.) He tried to manage our expectations about seeing the Northern Lights (the weather forecast was not cooperating) and I believe he was as happy as us when the magical and mesmerizing Northern Lights appeared. It seemed that he made it his personal mission for us to see the lights and I seem to have seen the pressure being lifted from his shoulder when we did. Thank you Andres for all the information. I have to read up on it now to retain it. 😊 The hotel staff were wonderful. Wake up calls were scheduled when the lights appeared. The guides for the lava and ice caves were both informative and delightful. The accommodations provided a warmth atmosphere in the cold and remote locations the tour brought us to. The only service that I did not find too satisfactory was the FlyBus. Although information was provided by GJ Travel ahead of time, the experience could have been better. It is a series of two buses; one that brings you to the bus station after which you transfer to a smaller bus to take you to your destination identified by colour zones. On my arrival, the second driver did not come to the waiting area nor announce her colour zone. I nearly missed her. It was a good thing I saw a red sign she was holding that I went to ask. On my departure, the driver that took us to the airport did not assist passengers with their luggage. Each passenger literally crawled in the underbelly of the bus to retrieve his/her suitcase/s. Is Iceland expensive? Yes! A 2.5 kilometre taxi ride was $30.00. Dining is prohibitive but the other choice is to starve. It is what it is. I always try local dishes when I travel and I have mentally prepared for this. A single dish costs at least $50.00. The menu is also limited. It is either lamb, fish or burgers. (Burgers are $50.00. No wonder MacDonald’s did not survive). I tried lamb (3x) and it was delicious. It was a breath of fresh air when I saw chicken and pasta as choices on one hotel. The server recommended the pasta and it was good. For lunches, there are not much in terms of choices in remote locations, so, we either went to a cafe or grocery stores. Sandwiches in grocery stores were a lot more reasonable price wise. I tried the ham, Brie and cranberry sandwich and it was delicious. The hiccups were minor and did not in anyway dampen my Icelandic experience. I have already started researching to go back and see the midnight sun.

Excellent agency GJ Travel. The impeccable hotels and the best of all was the local guide. All within the times and very organized. However, I consider it important to take into account if there are people who do not speak English, to have the option of some team that allows translation or explanation in the person's language. In my case, I traveled with my mom who doesn't speak English and it was complicated for her. And give more time at the souvenir shop stop. Otherwise, everything is fabulous. I recommend it, with the guide Margaret, an incredible woman

Our Northern Lights Tour was excellent. Our guide/driver was helpful and knowledgeable and went out of his way to add interest to the tour. For instance we saw local farmers and their families mustering and sorting sheep. This was totally unexpected and would not have happened without his local knowledge. We were fortunate to only have a small group on our tour and this gave our guide more flexibility. We saw the Northern Lights on three occasions in spite of the cloudy weather at the start of the tour. The tour program was well rounded with a good blend of waterfalls, glaciers, churches and beaches etc. We never felt waterfalled out or if we see one more glacier.

Can we get the Flybus transfer vouchers if we arrive earlier and stay later than the actual tour dates? We really want to see the Northern Lights. If a passenger is booked on a tour departure the tour will run. We have the same luggage as you have on a plane, one big suitcase and one small one. You can also have a backpack with you on the coach. Yes you can book the room through us and we honour the prices on our price list. The Flybus vouchers are an open ticket, so you are able to use them on the arrival day and departure day. The Northern Lights season is from September to mid-April. The longer you stay in Iceland during those months the more likely you are to see the Northern Lights. 2-night stay: About 20-25% chance. 4-night stay: About 60% chance. 5+ night stay: Over 85% chance. On the months where daylight is shorter, we do adapt the tour but you still see everything that is listed.

Can we still book and stay in the same room even though she pays in US money and I pay in Canadian dollars. We are flying from different locations. How do we indicate that we are part of the two travellers booking together. She will sign up from US and I will sign up from Canada. Is there any way we can indicate that we are together?

    • GJ TravelOperatorWritten September 2025

You should be able to make one booked each here via Tourradar and choose a Double room even though you are only one traveler. And I would keep an eye out for both booking and place you in the same room.

Does the discount that expires on Sept. 16 discount apply to this trip. If it does, I'm not sure I can book until a few days later because my friend will be away until Friday, Sept 19. Is there any way it will be extended.

    • GJ TravelOperatorWritten September 2025

We truly appreciate your interest in our tour so as a special gesture, we will extend the discount for you until Friday, September 19th. This isn't something we're offering to everyone, but we wanted to make sure you have a little extra time to take advantage of it.

Can I book for both of us and get the discount. Also, I'm a little confused about when to book my flight. If I leave at 7:40 pm from Toronto on Nov. 6th what time would we arrive in Reykjavik, Iceland. If we arrived early the next morning, what time can we get a ride on the shuttle and get into our hotel. Also, I read that there are fewer restaurants open at this time of the year. Is that true?

    • GJ TravelOperatorWritten September 2025

Once you book the tour, we will arrange the discount on our end. If you fly out in the evening on the 6th I estimate that you're arriving in Iceland in the morning of the 7th. The voucher you'll receive for the airport shuttle is flexible so you'll be able to arrange whatever time is most convenient for you at the FlyBus desk at the airport when you arrive. The standard check-in time at the hotel is at 15:00 so if you want to guarantee early check-in we recommend booking a pre-night. In Reykjavík most restaurants are open all year round so you'll have plenty of options in the downtown area. It's mostly in the countryside where some restaurants close during the winter season.

We are retired and can go when are chances are higher. We are looking at 2026. Perhaps March. But could come a different month. Should we book around the new moon or is the moon not a part of the consideration of the northern lights this far north. Also can we get help with flights. I will look up flights but wonder whether to get there a day earlier to be safe.

No need to consider the moon when deciding on your travel date. We can book you an extra night in Reykjavik before the tour if you want to arrive a day earlier!

What are the best months to see the northern lights next year. Both winter/ spring and fall/ winter.

    • GJ TravelOperatorWritten September 2025

The Northern Lights are visible from September until mid April, any time during that period is a great month to see them.

I recommend booking extra nights at Silica hotel directly with them. The extra nights booked with our tours are at the hotel in Reykjavik where you stay your first and last night.

Is it possible to check tour availability? Do all hotel rooms have washrooms with shower stall? Can I share a room with my same sex friend? Is February 20-27 the best time to see aurora borealis or is January better? What is the payment plan? What is the cancellation policy?

All hotels have private bathrooms with a shower. You can share a room with a friend by booking a Twin room. February and January are similar for Aurora sights - 95% chance in January and 89% in February. Deposit is required upon booking, with final payment a few weeks before departure. Cancellation fees: 20% if 6-8 weeks before tour, 50% if 4-6 weeks before, no refund less than 4 weeks before or for no shows.

What is the best time to go. We're retired and very flexible with time. Are there discounted last minute deals?

    Price / Availability
    Tour Details
    • GJ TravelOperatorWritten May 2025

We do not offer discounted last minute deals but if you are looking for the most budget friendly departure, they cost less from November until April (simply because the accommodation is cheaper these months during low season). The chances of seeing the Northern Lights on this tour is 90%, calculated from our experience on the tour. The difference between each month is small and the lowest rate is 83% in October, which is still very high and highest rate is in December and April with 100% success rate.
