From there, head into Grjótagjá lava cave, where there's a naturally heated thermal spring that you can see up close. Next comes Námafjalls steaming geothermal fields, which have this otherworldly feel with all the steam rising up. You'll also stop at Dettifoss Waterfall, one of Iceland's most powerful waterfalls. After all that, you cross through remote highlands before reaching Egilsstaðir by evening (this is a full day of driving and walking, around 6-7 hours).

In the afternoon, there's an optional Glacier Jeep Adventure available on Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier, which is a 3-4 hour super jeep excursion where you'll actually walk on snow and take in mountain views from way up there. You'll finish the day in Höfn, a charming fishing town that's well known for its lobster (drive time is around 4-5 hours, longer if you do the glacier tour).
