I had so much fun with my mom and sister on our Overland Portugal tour. We saw out-of-the-way places we never would have stumbled into on our own, and were helped every step of the way by our trusty guide Fuego. He was incredible! We learned so much about the Portuguese history and culture from him. And he had the entire group laughing for days. We were sad to say goodbye! The hotels were excellent, the experiences really well done and the scenery was unforgettable. Most of all I loved the people I met in Portugal. I hope to go back someday!

Planning a Portugal trip? You should definitely check out Portugal Travel Center's Presidential Train Tour. It's honestly something special. Most people rave about the unique routes they take you on. Planning Your Portugal Trip: Essential First Steps & Starting Points
Most travelers start their Portugal trip in Lisbon. The flight connections are great, and you'll find yourself right in the middle of historic neighborhoods like Alfama and Bairro Alto. If northern Portugal appeals to you more, Porto makes an excellent starting point with its incredible wine cellars and beautiful azulejo tiles covering the buildings. Want something completely different? Fly into Ponta Delgada and dive straight into the wild volcanic landscape of the Azores. Really good itineraries get you to must-see places like Sintra's Pena Palace and Belém's Jerónimos Monastery early in the morning, well before the crowds arrive. You'll want to book everything well in advance, especially if you're looking for good hotels or private drivers.

How Do You Get Around Portugal's Main Cities?
Getting around Portugal is actually really straightforward especially between the big cities like Lisbon and Porto thanks to their excellent train network. The trains are comfortable and you get to see some amazing countryside views along the way. If you're doing the Complete Portugal by Train tour you'll travel through Porto Aveiro and Lisbon and get to see iconic spots like the Ponte Vasco da Gama bridge its really quite something.
What Local Cultural Experiences Can You Join In On?
You've got to experience Fado music while you're in Portugal it's this incredibly soulful traditional performance that really moves you. Lisbon's where it all started and you'll find loads of venues in the old Alfama neighborhood doing nightly shows. In Coimbra it's a bit different more melancholic and often performed by university students in their traditional academic gear. Most tours like the Complete Portugal by Train or Highlights of Portugal include a Fado night its definitely worth experiencing.
Which Local Foods Should You Try and Where?
The food scene here is amazing you've got to try Pastel de nata these incredibly creamy custard tarts that you'll find in pastry shops all over but the ones in Lisbon's Belém district are really special. Then there's Ginjinha this sweet cherry liqueur that comes in a chocolate cup in Lisbon's historic center. If you make it to São Miguel Island in the Azores you need to try Cozido das Furnas its this unique stew that's actually cooked underground using natural heat from the earth. The São Miguel tours usually include tasting this its pretty incredible.
Where Are The Hidden Gems That Tourists Often Miss?
There are some really special places that don't get as many visitors but are absolutely worth seeing. Évora in the Alentejo region is amazing with its Roman ruins and fascinating bone chapel. Coimbra's got one of Europe's oldest universities and this wonderful mix of history and student life. Then there's Piódão tucked away in the mountains with these beautiful slate houses that just blend right into the landscape. The Highlights of Portugal tour takes you there its really quite special.
