What people love about Portugal Tours in September
- Best of Lisbon Tour (with Sintra, Évora and Cascais) - 5 Days in Portugal
Our experience booking our tour of Lisbon with Portugal Travel Center was great! Our tour guide, Daniel, was not only knowledgable in all our questions but also enthusiastically shared his love of Portugal. Our hotel - Turim Marques - was also a nice experience and we thoroughly enjoyed the daily breakfast buffet and friendly service. Lastly, the communication with our travel agents was phenomenal! They really made sure that everything went smoothly and went above-and-beyond so that all the details were sorted out and we didn't have to stress out too much during our trip. Specifically, Pedro and Daniela were awesome at sorting out our details and answering our questions regarding the remaining days we had in Portugal (outside of our tour of Lisbon). I would absolutely recommend Portugal Travel Center to others for Portugal travel booking needs in the future!

Tour guide Summer was better than excellent and a beautiful human being. We had a great time with a lovely group.
What our customers ask about Portugal Tours in September 2026
What is the weather like in Portugal during September?
September brings pleasant temperatures across Portugal typically ranging from 22-25°C (72-77°F) with minimal rain. The southern Algarve stays warm at around 26°C (79°F) while Porto and northern regions see comfortable temperatures near 20°C (68°F). This creates good conditions for both city exploration and beach activities. As one TourRadar traveler noted: "We visited in September and had perfect weather for exploring - warm enough for beaches but not too hot for sightseeing."
Which Portuguese beaches are best to visit in September?
The Algarve coastline offers excellent beach conditions in September when crowds thin but water temperatures stay around 22°C. Popular spots include Praia da Rocha in Portimão and Dona Ana Beach in Lagos. The Costa Vicentina provides quieter alternatives for visitors seeking more remote beaches. A TourRadar traveler shared: "The beaches in Lagos were perfect in September - warm enough for swimming but not overcrowded like in August."
What are the best regions to visit in Portugal during September?
The moderate September climate makes it possible to explore multiple regions comfortably. The Douro Valley and Porto in the north offer wine experiences while the Algarve provides beach opportunities. The Alentejo region centered around Évora and Monsaraz presents good weather for visiting historical sites. Coastal areas near Lisbon such as Cascais and Sintra balance cultural attractions with beach access. Consider stays at established properties like Vila Galé in Porto or Olissippo Marquês de Sá in Lisbon.
Are there any special festivals or events in Portugal during September?
The month features several cultural celebrations across the country. Porto hosts its Wine Festival while Nazaré celebrates the Our Lady of Nazaré Festival. The Douro Valley comes alive with grape harvest festivities. Madeira holds its Wine Festival in early September complete with traditional grape-treading ceremonies. A TourRadar traveler mentioned: "The wine harvest festivities in the Douro Valley were incredible - we got to participate in grape stomping and enjoy local music."
Which wine regions are best to visit in Portugal during September?
September marks peak season for Portuguese wine tourism especially in the Douro Valley during harvest. Visitors can join grape picking participate in tastings and attend wine festivals. The Vinho Verde region near Porto and Alentejo's wine country also welcome visitors. As noted by a TourRadar reviewer: "The Douro Valley in September was unforgettable - we got to see the actual harvest and participate in traditional wine-making activities at Quinta da Roeda."
What are the best day trips to take from major cities in September?
The mild September weather creates ideal conditions for exploring beyond city centers. From Lisbon travelers can reach Sintra and Cascais easily. Porto serves as a base for visits to the Douro Valley and Guimarães. The route between major cities includes notable stops at Batalha Monastery and the medieval town of Óbidos. A TourRadar traveler recommended: "We loved our September day trip to Sintra - perfect weather for exploring the palaces and gardens without the intense summer heat."
