This is a Tour of Africa - it is not Glamping. this is a Tour where everyone gets involved in cooking, cleaning, shopping. This Tour is part of a longer tour, you will be joining people who are already travelling. Please expect to walk in some difficult terrain. We absolutely loved this Tour. Obvious highlights were the Gorillas and Chimps, but the Ngorongoro crater was absolutely incredible. We met some amazing people, experienced some amazing sites, saw a huge amount of animals - definitely one for the memory box.

The trip was great - thoroughly enjoyed the 14-days programme. Well organized. Experienced and professional leadership by Joe - great, great professional assistance by Jonesmus and good save driving by Mugo. Thank you. Just a question: Why is this trip now 1000 US more expensive?

Well organised, fantastic trip of a lifetime! We had the best crew with Nash as guide and Steve as driver. Both so helpful, attentive, we felt safe, had so much fun, food was varied and tasty! We miss truck life a lot! tents easy to put up and spacious - sleeping mats provided fairly thin, better using two each if truck had enough spare! Best way to see Africa ! Would 100% recommend!!

The people on my tour were largely awful (trashy Ozzies and Brits you meet at hostels who think that they run the place) but that's not really the company's fault. The itinerary is beyond stupid. Literally you drive for 8 to 12 hours a day. Unpack your tent, help with cooking And then goto bed at 8. Up at 6 am to do it all over. The brochure glosses over this completely . Anyone who isn't on a long trip to Zanzibar or further would be better of flying to Rwanda and seeing gorillas and then to arusha. The overland model is really outdated and with low cost airlines in east Africa not necessary. The food was good but that's it. The trip is awful and management has a take it or leave it attitude. Also many of the side trips weren't even offered. Prepare to sit on a truck all day with wanna be backpackers who are afraid to travel on own.

Its an early start and a long bumpy ride to the gorillas. On the way you will see fantastic scenery and villages coming to life as the day breaks. Children walking miles to school in the dark. The whole trip is an event with the climax being the gorillas. You are almost certain to see them. You may have to walk for hours or minutes, its a lucky draw. No matter what you will be astounded at the magic of those beautiful creatures. Enjoy, we did.

The guide and driver were both good. Unfortunately, the trip was not that good. The young people, and those who were older but trying to relive their 20s, spent the whole time screaming drunk. And, I do mean LOUD! Like all the time! They were so loud that they would yell at the leader and contradict her. Sometimes, she had to tell them to be quiet but no one listened to her. It was totally out of control. These people had little interest in culture or wildlife but instead spent the time planning the next party. And if you're not into that, then you're not part of the group. Some of the people on the tour were so fed up that they wanted to leave and forfeit their trip costs. It was uncomfortable and I would not take another Absolute Africa tour unless you're into non-stop drinking & partying & screaming at everyone you see.

It's the connections with people, animals and the amazing African landscapes that makes this trip incredible! This trip includes some amazing experiences from Gorillas, chimp walks, having hippos outside your tent, camping in national parks, masai village visits, to travel in the big yellow truck. Made all the better by the people you get to share them with. We had the loveliest drive Angelo who kept us all safe and happy with his beautiful, happy and positive nature. Our tour guide Derek was exceptional. His Knowledge and connection to Africa, it's animals and people made for interesting and insightful commentary. He did an excellent job setting, meeting and exceeding our expectations throughout the trip. Most importantly Derek took the time to connect with everyone in the group creating lasting friendships! Thanks Derek, Angelo and Absolute Africa!

    Asked on November 13th, 2023

Is there a single supplement for a solo traveler?

    Single supplement
    Tour Details
    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten November 2023

As is the tradition of overlanding, travellers share a tent with another traveller of the same sex and so there is typically no single supplement. Note the tents are 3 man tents in which just two people sleep. If you specifically wanted your own tent then we will be able to accommodate this for the 18th December departure if this is advised ahead of time so we can ensure we have a spare tent on the truck. There would be no additional cost required.

    Asked on April 20th, 2023

Is it possible to rent sleeping bags, cutlery, etc (things that need to be brought by us) on this tour?

    Tour Details
    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten April 2023

We do not hire out sleeping bags and eating utensils/cutlery so you do need to bring these with you on the tour. We provide the tents and high density sleeping mats.

    Asked on February 22nd, 2023

How do I get to Kampala? I am really keen to see the chimps. Are the gorillas highland or lowland gorillas? Are the in volcanos national park? From Arusha how do I get back to Sydney?

    Flights / Transfers
    Tour Details
    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten February 2023

To get to Kampala, the nearest international airport is Entebbe. The chimps are an optional excursion that is scheduled into the Gorillas and Game Parks itinerary. We travel from Kampala to Kalinzu Forest on day 1 and overnight there, ready for those that wish to see the chimps to trek to see them the following day. The gorillas are highland gorillas and we visit family groups in Bwindi National Park, Uganda. At the end of the tour in Arusha, we can arrange transfers through to Nairobi or Kilimanjaro or Arusha airport as you need.

      Justin

      TravelerWritten February 2023

How far is Kampala from Entebbe? How are transfers arranged?

    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten February 2023

It is about an hour give or take from Entebbe to Kampala. We meet up for this tour the day prior to departure at Red Chilli in Kampala and you can reserve accommodation there online on their website. We can book you a transfer to Red Chilli from the airport if you wish. You then just pay for this locally.

    Asked on April 28th, 2022

    • Absolute AfricaOperatorWritten April 2022

The price is the same for single travelers, there is no extra supplement to pay. The permit to trek the gorillas is £570 (around U$720) with a local fee for the transport to and from the park of U$40. The chimpanzee trekking is U$50 and this you pay for locally when you are on the tour.
