Itinerary
- Day 1
Reykjavik to Landmannalaugar
You'll meet at Reykjavik City Hall at 7:00 AM and board a bus heading south along Iceland's coast. The 3-4 hour drive takes you past the active volcano Hekla before arriving at Landmannalaugar, a geothermal wonderland. From there, you'll start trekking through colorful rhyolite mountains and steaming hot springs, then cross the rough Laugahraun lava field. You'll visit Storihver hot spring and walk into the obsidian desert before reaching your overnight hut at Hrafntinnusker.

Hrafntinnusker to Álftavatn
After breakfast at the hut, you'll hike through Reykjafjoll mountains and descend into the Jökulungur geothermal area with yellow and red gullies. If the weather cooperates, you can climb Mt. Haskerdingur for views of glaciers, mountains, and volcanoes stretching out around you. The landscape gradually shifts to greener terrain with more vegetation as you make your way down the steep Jökulungur trail toward the Grashagakvisl river. You'll cross an unbridged stream on foot before settling in at Álftavatn lake hut for the night.

Álftavatn to Botnar
You'll start by crossing a stream, then hike past the green volcano Stórásula into the black Mælifellssandur desert. Watch for Hattafell, a volcano with an unusual flat top, as you traverse the black glacial landscape toward Emstrur. In this lush region, you'll see views of Eyjafjallajökull and Myrdalsjökull glaciers where sheep farmers historically grazed their flocks. Before reaching the Botnar hut in a green oasis, you'll detour to see Markarflótsglúfur, a deep canyon carved by the glacial river Markarflót.

Botnar to Reykjavik
You'll hike away from Emstrur toward Thorsmork, passing within a few kilometers of the great Myrdalsjökull glacier. As you descend toward Almenningar, trees begin to appear around you, signaling that you're approaching lower elevation terrain. Walking under the distinctive Einhyrningur mountain, you'll enter the dense birch forest of Thorsmork, a green valley surrounded by glaciers Eyjafjallajökull and Myrdalsjökull. After finishing the highland section, you'll board a bus back to Reykjavik, arriving at the Tourist Information Center around 10:00 PM.
