Reviews of Iceland Hiking & Trekking Tours
- Trekking Eastern Iceland
A wonderful trip! The town is beautiful, located on a bay in a relatively remote valley, surrounded by mountains. The accommodations were suitable, with plentiful food and drink. And there are an abundance of hiking trails. Our leader chose hikes different from the printed itinerary, which was appropriate given the weather and snow remaining on the higher peaks. Overall, a 5-star experience.
- Hiking in Iceland
I’m so glad I chose this journey over the traditional Golden Circle and day hikes. It still captured the cultural and landscape highlights, but through an entirely different lens. Trekking through Iceland’s highlands is unlike anything else: days of walking through vast volcanic ash fields, endless mossy plateaus, and absolute silence. It truly felt otherworldly. Found Expeditions was very professional. From securing hard-to-book huts to ensuring briefings before every part of the trek, especially with a focus on sensitive environments and responsible travel. Special thanks to our local guide Guffi, his knowledge, warmth, and deep connection to the land made a huge difference. A truly unforgettable experience. Highly recommended.
- Hornstrandir Traverse
The views were amazing, right from the dock in Isafjordur to the dropoff in Horn, and then the hikes. We were not able to do the hike on the second day because of bad weather but took a stroll instead. We were happy that we booked with Borea because the tents were excellent and we had a dry place to get together for meals.
What our customers ask about Iceland Hiking & Trekking Tours
What are the best hiking trails in Iceland for different skill levels?
Iceland's trails range from gentle walks to demanding multi-day journeys. Beginners can explore the well-marked paths of Thingvellir National Park where trails follow clear routes past ancient lava fields. The coastal paths near Vik let you walk along black sand beaches where puffin colonies nest. For those seeking more of a challenge the Skaftafell area offers day hikes with 400m climbs that take 5-6 hours. Experienced hikers head to the remote Hornstrandir Nature Reserve or take on the 55km Laugavegur trail from Landmannalaugar to Thorsmork. As one TourRadar traveler noted: "The varied landscape from volcanic fields to glacier views made every day unique and exciting."
What is the best time of year for hiking in Iceland?
The hiking calendar in Iceland centers on the summer months from June through September when trails open fully and weather stabilizes. The Laugavegur trail sees peak traffic in July and August thanks to mild temperatures and constant daylight. Hikers exploring the Snaefellsnes Peninsula often choose June to catch the wildflower displays while September brings rich autumn colors to Thorsmork Valley. A TourRadar traveler shared: "We went in July and had perfect hiking conditions with long daylight hours and comfortable temperatures around 12-15°C."
What type of accommodation can I expect on multi-day hikes in Iceland?
Sleep options on Iceland's trails span from rustic to refined. The classic Laugavegur route uses basic mountain shelters like the Álftavatn hut where hikers share dorm-style rooms. For treks through Hornstrandir private tent camps come equipped with cooking gear. Some routes let you upgrade to proper hotels such as Hotel Husafell near Langjokull glacier. As a TourRadar traveler mentioned: "The mountain huts were basic but clean and warm offering a true Icelandic wilderness experience."
What wildlife might I encounter while hiking in Iceland?
The trails of Iceland put you in prime position to spot native wildlife especially around Lake Myvatn and Borgarfjörður Eystri. Arctic foxes roam freely in Hornstrandir Nature Reserve while puffins crowd the coastal cliffs from May through August. Bird watchers head to Látrabjarg for seabird colonies and Þórsmörk Valley for its diverse species. East Iceland sometimes offers glimpses of wild reindeer. A TourRadar traveler noted: "Watching puffins at close range near Borgarfjörður Eystri was a highlight of our hiking adventure."
How physically demanding are multi-day hikes in Iceland?
The physical demands vary across Iceland's trail network. The Laugavegur Trek requires hiking 12-15km per day with climbs up to 900m making good fitness essential. Trails in the Eastern Fjords average 8-12km daily with moderate elevation gain. For an easier pace the 3-day Landmannalaugar Pearl tour keeps daily distances between 7-10km. Weather conditions can make any route more challenging. As one TourRadar traveler mentioned: "The Laugavegur trek was challenging but manageable with breaks and our guide adjusted the pace to accommodate different fitness levels."
How do guided vs. self-guided hikes compare in Iceland?
Guided trips offer local expertise navigation help and safety support especially in remote areas like Hornstrandir. Self-guided walks work well on clear routes such as those around Skógafoss. Most guided options handle the logistics from booking places to stay to planning meals and moving bags between stops. A TourRadar traveler shared: "Our guide's knowledge of weather patterns and terrain was invaluable especially during river crossings on the Laugavegur trail."
