Asked on July 23rd, 2025I'm interested in this hike for late July or early August of 2026. Can you provide a suggested list of things I should bring?
- Arctic AdventuresOperator•Written July 2025
Solo or guided trekking adventures in Iceland are much more challenging and longer than hikes. You'll leave your car and big luggage behind and take the needed items for two or more days into the wilderness of Iceland. Nights spent under the stars or in the company of adventurers in mountain huts, here's what you need to have on your trekking voyage on the Scandinavian Island: An extra pair of underwear, socks, and shirts Sleeping bag (and tent if camping) Day backpack, 25–40 liter (6.6– 10.5 gallons) Water bottle 2 liter (0.52 gallons) Portable water filtration system Personal medicine kit (which includes band-aids, throat lozenges, lip salves, second skin for blisters, etc.) Trekking poles Sunglasses Sunscreen Easy-to-cook food Cooking gear Utensils Garbage bags Shovel Toilet paper Personal hygiene kit (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.)

Traveler•Written July 2025I live in the Rocky Mountains of northern New Mexico and so the weather can be unpredictable in late July and early August, as I'm sure it is in Iceland. What temperatures can I expect during this period? Also, are there stores in Reykjavik where I can get backpacking supplies?
- Arctic AdventuresOperator•Written July 2025
During late July and early August, you can expect daytime temperatures on the Laugavegur trail to range between 45–60°F (7–15°C), though it can feel colder with wind or rain. At night, temperatures often drop close to freezing, especially at higher elevations or in bad weather. Wind and precipitation are both common, so sturdy, waterproof clothing and layered insulation are essential. As for backpacking supplies, yes - Reykjavík has several well-stocked outdoor stores, including 66°North, Fjallakofinn, and Útilíf, where you can find everything from fuel canisters to last-minute gear replacements.
