Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Cluj-Napoca to Sighisoara

Your guide picks you up at Hotel Transilvania in Cluj-Napoca at 10:00 AM and takes you to Sighisoara Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that Saxons founded back in the 12th century. You'll have time to either head to the Salt Mines of Turda or grab lunch at Casa Vlad Dracul Restaurant. By evening at 7:00 PM, the Great Dracula Ball kicks off with traditional Romanian dinner, local wine, and entertainment including the Ritual of Killing of the Living Dead and Vampire Hunting, so you're in for a late night until 2:00 AM. After all that, you'll stay overnight at a 3-star hotel right in the medieval citadel.

From there, you're off to Bran Castle from 1377, the place tied to the Dracula legend. Queen Maria of Romania turned it into a summer residence, so it's got some history behind it. Before the evening festivities, try some of the village's homemade traditional cheese, particularly the kinds smoked in pine tree bark. At 7:30 PM, the Halloween Party begins with a night tour of Bran Castle decked out for Halloween, encounters with wicked fairies, local red wine, and dancing in the courtyard until 4:00 AM.

I went searching for Dracula. Along the way, I found a beautiful country, warm people, and new friends. Our guide was terrific, teaching history along the way. It was a fun adventure. As to whether or not I found Dracula, I can only say, “Mayyyybe.”

Tour was excellent! Very few deviations from schedule. Recommend that provided dinners include wider choices. Also, better use of limited time for exploring Transylvania might start in Cluj-Napoca (where there is an international airport), rather than way south in Bucharest.
