3 Day Transylvania Itinerary, incl. Bucharest and Brasov
Mountains and medieval towns fill this 6-city Romanian tour including Bucharest, Brasov, and Bran. Highlights include Peles Castle, Piatra Craiului Mountains trails, the Black Church, and Balea Lake's glacier views. All inclusive with 4-star accommodation in Bran.
- Day 1
Bucharest to Bran
Leave Bucharest early for the 2.5-hour drive to Sinaia to visit Peles Castle. Get there in the morning before the crowds. You'll need comfortable shoes for the short uphill walk past local craft stalls to the entrance. After lunch make your way to Bran Castle which sits on a rocky outcrop. While it's known as "Dracula's Castle" it actually houses Queen Maria's art collection in a museum setting. Want a great photo? The best views of the castle are from the garden path below in the late afternoon light.
- Day 2
Brasov and Bear Watching
Start your morning hiking in the Carpathian Mountains around traditional villages where you'll still see more horse-drawn carts than cars. Make sure to wear sturdy boots since mountain trails can get slippery. Stop at small farms to try local sheep cheese before heading to medieval Brasov. Visit the Black Church while you're there. One visitor noted: "The history and architecture are incredible, and the view from the hilltop viewpoint is worth the 10-minute climb." The real excitement comes at dusk when you'll join a ranger for bear watching from a forest hide. Stay quiet and still and you might spot bear cubs playing nearby. Bring warm clothes since mountain evenings are cold even in summer.
- Day 3
Sinca Veche and Balea Lake
Begin at Sinca Veche an ancient cave monastery built over 6,000 years ago. Visit early to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Next up is Balea Lake a beautiful glacier lake at over 2,000 meters. Between November and June you can only reach the lake by cable car from Balea Waterfall. In summer you'll drive the Transfagarasan Highway one of Europe's most impressive roads. You'll get back to Bucharest around 7 PM depending on traffic. If you're flying out the next day book an evening flight to avoid Bucharest's morning traffic jams.
3 Days in Romania, incl. Bucharest and Brașov
Romanian landmarks await in Bucharest, Brașov, and Sighișoara. Six stunning sites include Peles Castle, Bran Castle, Black Church, and Unirea Salt Mine. Two nights in Brașov with breakfast, featuring 4-5 hours daily exploration.
- Day 1
Bucharest to Brașov
Leave Bucharest early and drive 2 hours to Sinaia to visit Peles Castle. Try to arrive before 10 AM to avoid tour buses. Remember the castle is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. You'll get the best photos of its German Neo-Renaissance architecture in the morning light. Drive another hour through the Carpathians to Bran Castle, which sits dramatically on a 200-foot cliff. Visit after 3 PM when most tour groups are gone. Make your way to medieval Brașov for a two-night stay. Take a walk down Rope Street in the evening. At just 4 feet wide, it's the narrowest street in Europe. Plan your visit to the Black Church based on seasonal hours: it closes at 5 PM in winter and 7 PM in summer.
- Day 2
Sighișoara Day Trip
Drive 2 hours to the UNESCO-listed Hartman Fortified Church. Continue to Sighișoara, one of Europe's most well-preserved medieval towns. "Sighisoara was exotic...the people in Romania are so nice and hospitable." Visit the 16th-century Clock Tower (closed Mondays), Vlad Dracula's birthplace, and the Church on the Hill with its old frescoes. Bring good walking shoes since the cobblestone streets can be slippery. Head back to Brașov for dinner in the historic center. You can find traditional Romanian food at most restaurants in the main square until 10 PM.
- Day 3
Salt Mine and Return to Bucharest
Start early for the Unirea Salt Mine in Slănic Prahova. Pack a light jacket since the mine stays at 12°C year-round. The salt air is great for your respiratory system, but be prepared to walk through 14 chambers. "The salt mine was an unexpected highlight!" It takes about 3 hours to drive back to Bucharest. If you have a late flight, you might want to stop at Therme Bucharest spa near the airport. Many travelers say it's a perfect way to end the trip.
3 Days in Romania, incl. Bucharest and Brasov
Romania's finest attractions span 5 cities, including UNESCO-listed Sighisoara and medieval Brasov. Marvel at Peles Castle's 160 rooms, descend into Europe's largest salt mine at Unirea, and meet 90 rescued bears at Libearty Sanctuary.
- Day 1
Bucharest to Brasov via Unirea and Sinaia
Leave Bucharest around 8 AM to avoid traffic on your 2.5-hour drive to Unirea Salt Mine. Take a light jacket since the mine stays at 12°C throughout the year. The mine is wheelchair accessible, but you'll need good shoes for walking on the salt-covered floors. A recent visitor said: "The salt mine was an unexpected highlight – bring your camera as the geometric patterns in the walls are incredible." Drive to Sinaia to visit Peles Castle, Romania's most impressive royal residence. Book your castle tour ahead of time, especially during summer. The German New-Renaissance style looks best in morning light. After a 45-minute drive, you'll reach Brasov for the night. Stay near Piata Sfatului (Council Square) for easy access to restaurants and the Black Church.
- Day 2
Sighisoara and Bran Castle
Take a 2-hour drive to Sighisoara in the morning. This medieval citadel is one of Europe's best preserved. Get to the Clock Tower early before crowds arrive. Watch your step on the cobblestones if it's wet. The Church on the Hill offers great views but requires climbing a steep covered staircase. One visitor noted: "The view from Sighisoara's Clock Tower was worth every step – the colorful houses below look like a medieval painting come to life." Later, take a 2.5-hour drive to Bran Castle. While it's known as "Dracula's Castle," its real history is just as interesting. Visit after 3 PM when it's less crowded. Head back to Brasov for dinner and try the Romanian restaurants on Republicii Street.
- Day 3
Bear Sanctuary and Return to Bucharest
Visit the Libearty Bear Sanctuary at 9 AM. Book your guided tour in advance. It's a 30-minute drive from Brasov and houses about 90 rescued bears. Morning visits give you the best chance to see active bears. Bring hiking shoes since paths can get muddy. The 3-hour drive back to Bucharest lets you reflect on your journey through Romania's history and wildlife.
What people love about 3-day Romania tours
- Adventure trip to Transylvania in 3 days from Bucharest (small group tour)
We did 3 days Transylvania tour from Bucharest, and it was amazing! The company is very professional and our driver/tour guide Alex is a super nice person. I recommend anyone thinking about going to Transylvania to take a tour with Rolandia instead of driving all the busy roads till Brasov and from there to unmarked roads from where you can start exploring the Carpathians.
- Transylvanian Treasures: Castles, Legends, and Medieval Marvels
Very nice trip, Florin, the guide was super flexible and very prompt, The accommodations in Braşov were excellent, clean and very unique near the market square. The people in Romania are so nice and hospitable. Because we booked a very short trip and knew very little about Romania to make choices of sites, there was a lot of time riding in a car. Saying that, Florin was such a hard worker and willing to show the magnificent country, we probably should have requested to pare down some of the locations to allow a bit more downtime. Thank you so much,
- Discover Medieval and Wild Transylvania, Meet the Brown Bears, and Count Dracula
Romania is a beautiful country and this holiday did exceed our expectations. In February everywhere is covered in snow. Thankfully the tour was not cancelled for just two persons, Florian the guide used his private car instead of a mini van so we were super comfortable, Florian is a genuine petson and he did go out of his way to make sure that we were carefully looked after. The accommodation and breakfast were very good. We would highly recommend this tour to a friend.
