Itinerary
- Day 1
Paro to Thimphu
You'll arrive at Paro airport and get transferred to Thimphu, which takes a couple of hours by road. Once you're settled, there's the Iron Bridge from the 14th century to check out, a structure that's been around through centuries of Bhutanese history. After checking into your hotel, you'll head to the Authentic Craft Bazaar to see what local artisans are making, then move on to Tashichhodzong fortress. This palace serves as both the seat of government and a monastery, so it's quite significant culturally. Dinner happens in town, and you'll spend the night in Thimphu, which interestingly has no traffic signals despite being the capital.

- Day 2
Thimphu
Start with the towering Buddha Dordenma statue on top of a hill overlooking the city. From there, head to the Simply Bhutan museum where you can learn about traditional Bhutanese life, clothing, and how they make rice wine through distillation. Later in the day, you'll visit Thangtong Dewachen Nunnery and then the Takin Preserve Centre to see these unique animals. Sangaygang viewpoint gives you another nice perspective of the valley. Before evening, check out the Handmade Paper Mill and the School of Arts and Crafts where you can see traditional artisans at work. Finish with a casual walk through town as the day winds down.

- Day 3
Thimphu to Phobjikha Valley
This involves a scenic drive to Phobjikha Valley with a stop at Dochula Pass at 3,100m/10,170ft, where you'll get panoramic views of the Himalayas and walk around 108 stupas that dot the area. The drive itself is part of the experience as the landscape shifts. Once you reach Phobjikha, you'll visit Gangtey Monastery and then take a nature trail through the village that ends at Khewa Lhakhang. The valley is known for its serenity and as a wintering ground for black-necked cranes, so you might catch glimpses of these endangered birds. You'll overnight here surrounded by mountains and quiet.

- Day 4
Phobjikha Valley to Punakha
Travel from the valley to Punakha, which is known for its striking landscape and historical significance. Chimi Lhakhang is a small temple with unique artwork covering local houses around it, and it has an interesting cultural story. Then you'll see Punakha Dzong, considered one of Bhutan's most beautiful fortresses with its distinctive architecture along a river junction. Crossing the 250m Punakha Suspension Bridge gives you another perspective of the area, and at 250m, it's the longest suspension bridge in the country. By evening you'll be back in town.

Punakha to Paro
Return to Paro and start with the National Museum, which has extensive collections about Bhutanese history and culture. Then explore Paro Dzong from the 17th century, walk across the oldest wooden bridge in the area, and visit Kitchu Lhakhang, which is actually Bhutan's oldest temple dating back centuries. Take some time for a stroll through old Paro town where you can try on traditional Bhutanese dress and get a feel for how locals live. Before wrapping up, head to the Paro International Airport viewpoint for views of the surrounding area and a sense of arrival and departure to this remote country.

Paro
You have two options today depending on what appeals to you. Option 1 takes you on a hike to Tiger's Nest Monastery, which sits on a cliffside and requires a moderate hike to reach. After the hike, you'll have a traditional hot stone bath to relax your muscles. Option 2 is a scenic day excursion to Chelela Pass where you get views of Mt. Jomolhari and can see the diverse plant and animal life at that elevation. Either way, the evening is free, so you can rest or explore Paro at your own pace.
