    Lima to Cusco

Your journey kicks off in Lima, then you'll head out to the Ballestas Islands where you can see sea birds and marine mammals from boat. After that comes the Huacachina Oasis in the Ica Desert, where there's the option to try dune buggies and sandboarding before watching the sunset and sleeping under the stars. Moving on, you'll reach the Nazca Lines with optional flights available if you want to see them from above, followed by Chauchilla Cemetery to see the mummies. You'll camp at Puerto Inca and then drive to Arequipa for a two-night stay, giving you time to walk around the colonial architecture and catch views of El Misti Volcano (5,822m/19,101ft). From there it's into Colca Canyon, which runs twice as deep as the Grand Canyon, where early morning brings chances to spot condors. A couple of days of driving with bush camping gets you to Cusco.

The main draw here is reaching Machu Picchu, which you can do via the Classic Inca Trail, Lares Trail, Salkantay Trek (all need advance booking and are optional), or take the train instead. While in Cusco, you can walk through the city to see its distinctive architecture and spend time browsing the colorful markets around town. Bolivia: Sucre, Potosi and Uyuni

From La Paz you head into rural Bolivia where roads are largely unpaved and Aymara and Quechua communities farm small plots. A couple of days driving with a bush camp overnight brings you to Sucre, known locally as the '4 Names City' because of its layered history, and the lower altitude here makes it warmer and greener than La Paz. Don't miss Cretaceous Park with its thousands of dinosaur footprints on display. A short drive takes you to Potosi at 4,060m/13,320ft, the world's highest city of its size, which was the Americas' largest city 400 years ago. You can visit the Casa Nacional de Moneda to learn the city's silver mining past, or go into one of the historic mines where methods haven't changed in centuries (for those up for it). After leaving the Altiplano behind, you'll reach Uyuni's white Salt Flats, where you can optionally take a jeep across them.

After a couple of nights relaxing at cafes around Plaza 9 de Julio, you'll see the neoclassical Salta Cathedral and El Cabildo, an 18th century town hall turned museum. Heading south through lakes and baked cliff formations, you reach Cafayate, Argentina's first wine region known for white wines where you can tour wineries on foot or by bike. Continue on Route 40, Argentina's longest highway, to Mendoza, the main wine region with opportunities for wine tastings and local steak. From there, cross the Andes into Chile via the Inca Bridge and San Martin's Pass to reach Santiago, the modern capital, where you'll have free time for exploring, trying Chilean restaurants, visiting wineries like Casillero del Diablo, and skiing if it's winter season.

As I wanted to cover as much as I could of South America, I choose Oasis Overland as they covered the most in comparison to the other tour sites and for a great price. Our tour leader and driver were absolutely amazing and the other passengers on the tour made the trip, what it was, unforgettable. Oasis covered the main bits that I wanted too and then some. I would definitely book through them again.

This tour is 15 weeks of mixed weather, mixed altitude, mixed areas such as cities and national parks, beaches and mountains. Its a great way to see lots of things, experience everything and get involved. All while making friends on the truck and enjoying the security of a team guiding you. The crew were great, Kim the tour leader was fab at organising optional activities and recommending places to eat, drink or see. Gareth our driver was great, kept us safe and fixed anything that needed attention. Its hard work, you camp lots or stay in a mixture of hotel/guesthouses and hostels. People get ill, tired and drama will happen but that's all part of the experience. You look out for each other and dig in. I loved my time and experience but just be prepared its not a normal package holiday!

    Asked on June 18th, 2025

We would like to know about the camping- nights, ca. 50%. Many times we are over 2000 m or more, isn it to cold to spend the nights in the tents? Is there a toilet in the truck? The price is + USD 1'350, is it correct?

    Transport
    • Oasis OverlandOperatorWritten June 2025

Transport is on one of our specially designed overland expedition trucks. The trucks don't have toilets nor fridges onboard. Overnights are a mix of camping and budget hotels/hostels/guesthouses. Sometimes we sleep in fixed campsites that have shared washing/toilet facilities, but we also do a fair bit of bush camping where we set up entirely on our own, and you will be toileting 'al-fresco'. The pre-paid trip price is £1995 per person plus a local payment of US$1350 per person.

    Asked on January 6th, 2025

What are the actual start and end dates of this trip? 9 November to 13 December is 35 days but the write up states that in 2025 this trip is being extended to 39 days so the dates can't be right.

    Tour Details
    • Oasis OverlandOperatorWritten January 2025

Next year's trip will be 39 days, and will start with us departing from Lima on Day 1, 9th November. You will need to arrive into Lima on 8th November at the latest. We then finish in Santiago on Day 39, which is the 17th December.
