Bolivia is my favorite country in South America thanks to Gonzalo and Intrepid Travel! Gonzalo our guide showed the best and brightest the country had to offer. He was extremely knowledgeable and helpful. There is so much more to this country than just the salt flats!!! I was one of ten people on this trip so it was great to have such a small group which made it feel less like a 'tour.' Intrepid has consistently showed me the smallest group size out of any other company i've traveled with which i really appreciate!

An utterly "other worldy" experience! First day on Salt Flats was great - but only really after we left the over crowded bit where all the single day visitors congregate. Once out on the salt flats it became interesting and the sun set experience was beautiful. But then came the second day when we headed south towards the Chili frontier and all the volcanoes and weird scenery. This was like I would imagine a trip to Mars. The red, green and blue lagoons with their unique Flamingo populations, the high altitude desert, the walk across the live volcano caldera at 4900m with bubbling mud and water. It was telling that all of the group found Day 2 more stunning than the Day 1 on the Salt Flats, stunning as that was too. Biggest negative of the trip was the night bus down from La Paz. Seriously uncomfortable. But, the service and attitude of Jose Angulo and his team at the Joker Expedition Office and Hotel was exceptional. He organised our return flights instead of having to use the night bus again. Drove us the airport and provided a free night in one of his Hotel rooms in place of the night bus. I strongly recommend Joker Expedition (591 73336307) if you want a good contact for Tours and Accommodation in Uyuni.

Best tour companies for Bolivia tours
Intrepid Travel really stands out for keeping their groups small, which makes a huge difference in how you experience places. When you're not moving around as part of a big crowd, you get to actually chat with locals and slip into smaller restaurants and spots that bigger groups just can't access. Their guide Gonzalo gets mentioned a lot in TourRadar reviews - he's got this deep knowledge of the areas and goes out of his way to help everyone in the group feel comfortable. Bamba's also getting good marks from travelers for putting together solid itineraries and their food stops are spot on. Their guides know their stuff and really help bring places to life. That said, a few of our travelers have hit some bumps with flight arrangements and getting clear updates about their bookings. It's worth noting these communication hiccups since they've come up more than once in recent feedback. When you stack them up, Intrepid seems to have the edge on the personal touch and smoother operations, but Bamba's definitely got their strong points too, especially when it comes to their food choices and local expertise.

What's the Best Time to Visit Bolivia?
The dry season from May through October is your sweet spot for exploring Bolivia with clear skies and really comfortable temperatures. It's perfect if you want to check out the Salar de Uyuni and Altiplano regions but pack some warm stuff because nights up in the high altitude areas above 3600m can get pretty chilly even in the dry season. During wet season November to April the salt flats transform into this incredible mirror effect that reflects the sky it's absolutely stunning but keep in mind some routes might be flooded and tough to access. The temperatures hover around 86°F or 30°C in the dry season which is just about perfect for most travelers. If you're heading to the Andes or Amazon you'll want to look up specific weather patterns because these areas have their own microclimates.
What Can You Experience of Local Life and Traditions?
You'll find some amazing cultural experiences in Bolivia starting with La Paz's Witches' Market where locals sell traditional remedies and handicrafts it's pretty fascinating stuff. The Sunday market in Tarabuco is a must-see our TourRadar customers always rave about it especially for the incredible Aymara weaving traditions. Over on Lake Titicaca's Isla del Sol you can dive into ancient Inca culture checking out the Inca Steps and Fountain of Youth. For a really authentic experience try staying with local communities or at the Jukil Community lodge. The 12-Day Bolivia Andes Hiking and Amazon Expedition lets you get really close to local life in some pretty remote communities.
What Natural Areas Can You Visit Outside the Cities?
The Eduardo Avaroa Andean Fauna Reserve is absolutely incredible you'll need a 4x4 to get there from Uyuni but it's worth it for the colored lagoons flamingos and Siloli Desert. Madidi National Park in the Amazon is a biodiversity paradise you can get there by flying into Rurrenabaque then taking a boat trip. If you're into mountain adventures the Cordillera Real range with peaks like Huayna Potosi is accessible from La Paz through organized treks. The Best of BoliviLa Paz to Uyuni tour takes you through some amazing spots including the Siloli Desert and the stunning Red Lake Laguna Colorada.
How Do You Get Around Bolivia?
Getting around Bolivia is pretty straightforward local buses connect all the major cities they run frequently but comfort levels can vary. For longer trips you might want to grab an overnight tourist bus with reclining seats it's much more comfortable. The Best of BoliviLa Paz to Uyuni tour uses these overnight buses which works really well. If you're short on time domestic flights between places like La Paz Sucre Uyuni and Santa Cruz are super convenient La Paz to Uyuni is just a quick 40-minute hop. In La Paz don't miss riding the Mi Teleférico cable car system it's not just transport it's an experience with amazing views. Around town you've got plenty of taxis and micros these little minibuses to get you where you need to go.
Which Festivals Should You Try to Experience?
Bolivia's festivals are incredible the Tarabuco Festival in March is this amazing celebration of indigenous culture with traditional music dance and crafts you won't want to miss it. The Oruro Carnival is absolutely spectacular it's actually UNESCO recognized and happens in February or March with these amazing costumes and parades. January brings the Alasitas Festival to La Paz where everyone buys miniatures for good luck it's pretty unique. Then there's the Tinku festival in Potosí usually in May where indigenous communities take part in ritual combat it sounds intense but it's all about renewal and fertility.
