Itinerary
- Day 1
Arusha/Moshi to Rongai Gate
Your driver picks you up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi early in the morning for the 5-hour drive to Rongai Gate near the Kenya border. After you complete registration, the hike begins through montane forest where you might spot wildlife moving through the trees. Lunch gets served on the trail, and then you'll continue on to your first campsite for the night.

Rongai
Today you're hiking through Kilimanjaro's moorland on the Rongai route, which tends to be shorter than other routes but involves some steep sections. The day's relatively short hiking times mean you're not on the trail for hours and hours. Throughout the hike, Mawenzi Peak comes into view ahead of you as you work your way up the mountain.

Landmarks Mawenzi Peak - Day 3
Mawenzi Tarn
This is more of a relaxed day focused on getting your body adjusted to the altitude. You'll start with a morning hike that's short but steep, then spend the afternoon and evening resting at camp. Mawenzi Tarn campsite sits below Mawenzi Peak, so you get views of both Mawenzi and Kibo peaks from where you're camped.

Landmarks Mawenzi Tarn Campsite Mawenzi Peak Kibo Peak - Day 4
Mawenzi Tarn
You're staying another night at Mawenzi Tarn for acclimatization. The morning brings a hike that takes you a bit higher in elevation, and then you head back down to the campsite in the afternoon. This back-and-forth approach helps your body adjust to the alpine desert conditions before you push higher.

Landmarks Mawenzi Tarn Campsite - Day 5
Kibo Camp
Today you cross the lunar landscape of the saddle between the two peaks and reach Kibo Camp, your final campsite before the summit attempt. Kibo Camp sits right below the Kibo cone, giving you unobstructed views of what's ahead. You'll get to see exactly where you're heading when you start your nighttime push.

Landmarks Kibo Camp Kibo Peak - Day 6
Uhuru Peak
Around midnight, you begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak with your flashlight in hand. The hike to Gilman's Point at the crater rim takes roughly six hours and ranks as the most difficult part of the trek. From Gilman's Point, the climb to Uhuru Peak (the highest point in Africa) is more gradual and takes about two hours. After reaching the summit and taking photos, you start the long descent down to Horombo Hut.

- Day 7
Marangu Gate
After breakfast, you finish the trek by descending to Marangu Gate while passing back through Kilimanjaro's cloud forest. The trail can get slippery during this section, so watch your footing carefully. Your vehicles are waiting at the gate to drive you back to your hotel after the trek.
