Pack a light jacket for Monreale Cathedral, which stays cool inside year-round. Visit the Byzantine mosaics in late afternoon for the best lighting.     Cefalù Coast

    Isle of Salina

  • Days 1-2

    Palermo

    Ragusa & Piazza Armerina

    Book a morning tour of Villa Romana del Casale to see the Roman mosaics before it gets too hot. Spend time in Ragusa's UNESCO Baroque old town of Ibla. The steps between Upper and Lower Ragusa are steep but offer great spots for photos.

    Syracuse to Taormina

    Get to Syracuse's archaeological park when it opens at 8:30 AM to see the Greek Theatre peacefully. Take the coastal route to Taormina and stop at Catania's fish market if it's not Sunday. Budget extra time for the winding road to Taormina it often gets congested.

    Savoca

    This Godfather filming location is best seen on foot. Stop at Bar Vitelli for their traditional granita locals love the almond or pistachio. When back in Taormina watch the sunset over Mt. Etna from the Greek Theatre.

    Malta

    Fly to Malta and stay in St. Julian's. Start your mornings at Valletta's Upper Barrakka Gardens. Visit Mdina late afternoon after the crowds leave.   • Days 1-2

    Palermo & Journey to Taormina

    Visit the Capella Palatina in Palermo during early morning to see its beautiful mosaics before the crowds arrive. Plan about 2-3 hours for the cathedral complex. The drive to Taormina takes 3.5 hours. Leave Palermo early to avoid heavy midday traffic. You can take the coastal route for better views but know it's longer than the inland highway.

    Mount Etna

    Head to Rifugio Sapienza early (1 hour from Taormina) to avoid crowds and heat. Wear shoes with good grip since the volcanic ground is loose and slippery. Plan a wine tasting at an Etna winery for the afternoon when visibility is usually better.     Syracuse & Beach Time

    Noto & Baroque Towns

    Stay in Noto while exploring Sicily's Baroque triangle. Be careful on the wet cathedral steps and use the handrails. When in Modica park in the upper town and walk down through the historic center. Good tip: Visit Antica Dolceria Bonajuto for famous chocolate before 11 AM to beat the tour groups.

    
  • Days 8-9

    Agrigento & Valley of Temples

    Visit the Valley of Temples early or late in the day since there's little shade. Bring plenty of water. Sunset creates perfect photos at the Temple of Concordia. Stop at Scala dei Turchi but be careful when the white marl steps are wet. Good shoes are important here.

    Return to Palermo

    The drive back to Palermo takes 2 hours. Give yourself extra time to get gas before returning your rental car since airport station lines can be long. Book a later flight to avoid morning traffic.
