Asked on January 10th, 2024A friend and myself are starting to piece together our trip to Africa. We arrive in Nairobi on the 14th September. We are planning on getting the East Africa Tourist Visa Plus a single entry Visa for Tanzania. We would like to visit the Gorillas and we are aware we are at the end of the peak season and going into the rainy season meaning we would like to visit the Gorilla first. From a little research we see that the permits for visiting Gorillas in Uganda is much cheaper than Rwanda. However with same research it seems Uganda Gorillas are mountain Gorillas so trek bit more jungle and Rwanda more low lying Gorillas. Could you please give advice and prices regarding a trip to Visit the Gorillas around September 17th (ish). We are both in our early 50s but fit and willing (not sure if prepared) to trek, your honest opinion would be really appreciated. We are also open to doing a 5 day (again ish) safari which maybe could lead us into the Gorilla trek if that is possible.

We usually approach the gorillas via Uganda. If we cannot secure the permits in Uganda, we work via Rwanda and if we do not succeed, our last resort would be the DRC. The pricing can change drastically and with immediate effect in any of the three countries, so it is difficult saying where the permits are cheaper. It is advisable to book the permits well in advance. The gorillas are all silverback gorilla families, approached from different directions. Being in your 50s, you should be fine as long as you are reasonably fit, the trekking can take anywhere from 1.5 hours to 6+ hours, depending on where the families are. The guides usually have an idea because the gorillas are monitored by scouts. But they are wild animals living in the wild and constantly on the move, so it is not an exact science. Please note that if you have flu or any disease, even a runny nose, you will not be permitted to trek. The reason for this is that gorillas share 98% of our DNA and they are susceptible to many of our diseases and as they are endangered we cannot risk making them sick.
