Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Rome

You'll board your cruise ship and settle into your stateroom before heading out to explore Rome. The Colosseum and Roman Forum give you a sense of the city's ancient scale, and then you can make your way to Vatican City and St. Peter's Basilica. There's over 2,500 years of history layered throughout Rome, so you'll want to pace yourself and hit the highlights that interest you most.

  2. Day 2

    Salerno

Salerno serves as your gateway to the Amalfi Coast, and you'll find the city itself worth exploring. Walking through the winding streets reveals the character of this Norman-era city, which survived World War II and kept its historical layers intact. The newly renovated shoreside boulevard is a good spot to grab lunch and take in the Mediterranean views along with that ancient atmosphere.

    • Enrichment lectures
    • Destination Performances
    Landmarks/POIs
    Amalfi Coast
  3. Day 3

    Palermo

Palermo pulls you in with its food scene and cultural energy. The open markets are packed with vendors selling fresh produce and local specialties like arancini and sfincione, so plan to spend time sampling things as you walk through. After the markets, head to the Royal Palace of Palermo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Europe's oldest private residences that really shows off the city's layered history.

    • Destination Performances
    Landmarks/POIs
    Royal Palace of Palermo
  4. Day 4

    Tunis

Tunis blends North African tradition with French influences in ways you'll notice walking through different neighborhoods. The tree-lined Avenue Habib Bourguiba is good for strolling, and from there you can wander into the ancient souks where the pace and energy shift completely. If you have time, Carthage is nearby as a UNESCO site and offers insight into the ancient Carthaginian Republic that once rivaled Rome.

  5. Day 5

    Cagliari

Cagliari in Sardinia has a different feel from the mainland, with its agricultural heritage and vineyards showing what the island produces. The Castello District holds a Roman amphitheater and the Cathedral of St. Mary built into the rock underground, both worth checking out. The whitewashed buildings throughout the city have that distinctive look that inspired D.H. Lawrence to call it the 'white Jerusalem.'

    Landmarks/POIs
    Castello District
    Cathedral of St. Mary
  6. Day 6

    At Sea

Today you stay on the ship and sail through Mediterranean waters. The Sun Deck gives you views of blue water in every direction, and you can spend the day relaxing by the Infinity Pool or taking walks along the Promenade Deck. It's a good day to rest up between ports and enjoy the ship's amenities without rushing off anywhere.

    • Enrichment lectures
    • Destination Performances
  7. Day 7

    Valencia

Valencia has 2,000 years of history wrapped into its layout, and you'll see it in the Old Town with its ancient buildings and open plazas. The Gothic Silk Exchange is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that shows off the city's medieval importance, and local restaurants offer paella demonstrations and tastings so you can learn about how this centuries-old dish comes together. It's worth spending a few hours just walking and eating your way through different neighborhoods.

If you want to keep traveling instead, there are tour extensions available that you can book before you leave. Either way, you're wrapping up a solid Mediterranean journey with stops across multiple countries and cultures.

Our Rhine Getaway cruise was impacted by the flooding on the Rhine River, but the Viking team went out of their way to make our holiday the best that it could be under the circumstances, and we had a marvelous time. In fact, we have already booked another Viking cruise for 2025. We had the cheapest cabin option but there was nothing cheap about it. It was lovely and the cleaning crew were in there twice a day keeping it spotless. The food on board was incredible. I have never been so well fed. The staff were all cheerful and friendly and they worked very hard to make us all happy. Billy, our cruise director had a massive task presented by the flooding. He had to transfer all the guests from the Alruna to the Tialfi which involved a bus trip from Koblenz to Breisach. He travelled with us and made sure that it all went smoothly, then he remained on the Tialfi until the end of the cruise. He arranged busses to take us to the excursions that we were supposed to go to on the cruise and came along each time. On top of all that he had to deal with the guests some of which were not easy, but he remained calm and collected throughout. So top marks to Billy for a difficult job well done. The team on board the Tialfi did a great job of making us feel better about our altered itinerary. When we arrived from the Alruna they served mocktails at the door and had put a welcome card and bag of chocolates in every cabin. Every time we came back from one of our bus excursions, they would be waiting with either mocktails or macarons. Viking are simply amazing, and I am recommending them to all my friends.
