Tokyo
You'll visit three of Tokyo's major spiritual sites starting with Meiji Jingu Shrine, the city's largest and most powerful shrine. Then head to the Imperial Palace Outer Gardens to see its historical buildings and landscaping, and finish at Senso-ji Temple, which has stood for nearly 1400 years and remains Tokyo's oldest temple.

Hakone
Take the shinkansen bullet train from Odawara to Nagoya (about 1 hour 10 minutes). In Hakone, board the Hakone Pirate Ship for a scenic cruise on Lake Ashino with Mt. Fuji visible on the horizon. Then ride the Hakone Ropeway up to Owakudani, an active volcanic zone, where you can try the local black eggs boiled in sulfuric waters.

Takayama

Kanazawa to Kyoto
Take the bullet train in two legs: Kanazawa to Tsuruga (about 45 minutes), then Tsuruga to Kyoto (about 52 minutes with 5-10 minutes for the train change). When you arrive in Kyoto, a private driver will take you to your hotel near the station, and you can check in on your own.

Kyoto
Start with Kodaiji Temple in Higashiyama District, built in 1606 with ornate architecture and beautiful Zen gardens. Walk along Nene no Michi, a historic street that keeps Kyoto's traditional character intact. Stop at Yasaka Shrine, known for the Gion Matsuri festival. In the evening, catch traditional Japanese performing arts at Gion Kobu Kaburenjo Theater and look for geisha in the Hanamikoji District.
