Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Geysir - Gullfoss

Your driver picks you up at 8:30 AM from your Reykjavik place and takes you to Thingvellir National Park. You'll hike about 10 km along the Earth's fault lines, and your guide explains why this UNESCO World Heritage Site matters historically. After that, you head to Geysir to see the spouting springs, then continue on to Gullfoss waterfall. By evening you're at your hostel by Lake Laugarvatn, where you'll stay for the next three nights. That night you can look for Northern Lights from the hostel.

It's a short drive to Nesjavellir geothermal power plant this morning. Depending on snow conditions, you'll either hike or snowshoe for about 5 to 10 km through lava rocks, mud pots, and boiling springs. You head back to the hostel for dinner. Later if you want, there's the Fontana Spa geothermal baths just a few minutes away, where the outdoor hot jacuzzi lets you soak while watching for Northern Lights overhead.

A certified guide leads you on the glacier walk where you'll see ice in white, blue, and crystal shades, plus deep crevasses and water cauldrons. Your guide talks about how glaciers form and connect to the volcanoes nearby. After that, you stop at the Black Beach of Reynisfjara, then check out Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls on the way back to your hostel. The evening is yours to watch for Northern Lights.
