Everything about the trip was fantastic and I would thoroughly recommend the company. I gave it a low score but the trip very nearly did not happen for us. When I booked the trip my daughter was in the process of applying for a new passport. I told this to Touradar who advised me to book the trip and then supply my daughters new passport number once it had come. I did this 5 days later and was told by Touradar all her details had been amended with the new passport number. We checked in with Alpacatours 2 days before the hike and once again provided our passports for them to check. When we arrived at the entrance of the hike the documentation still had my daughters old passport number. We were only allowed through because my daughter had a photo of her old passport on her cell phone. This should never have happened and it could have completely ruined our trip. I don’t know if Touradar are at fault or Alpacatours but when you put your trust in these companies to sort the details out like this it’s completely unacceptable that this happened.

This team thought of everything and anything to make you as comfortable as possible and they made sure you were well taken care of and well fed. Several of us had some GI issues, and our tour guides made sure to get us back in tip top shape to enjoy our hike. I would recommend this hike to anyone who is in shape and looking for an awesome way to experience Inca history and the sights of the mountains and Machu Picchu.

I thought I was in better shape than I was. The uphills were challenging but the downhills were very difficult. Luckily Tino and Umberto were there with me every step of the way although I am sure it was very frustrating for them. This also meant that our two guides needed to split up and / or use some porters to help me. I am an avid hiker in the Midwest of the US but I realized that even in more remote parks / trails here, there are many crisscrossing paths meaning that you are never very far a trail head or at least a road that will let you bail out of continuing. I did not realize that once on the Inca Trail, there was only one way off - to finish it. Tino offered a porter to help me get back to the trail head after day one but it seemed that 9 miles return vs 10 miles forward was pretty much the same; I also thought that day three and four would be easier. The support of the staff was phenominal. However, I think that there should be a warning in the brochure about the difficulty involved, and that there is no turning back or bailing out once started. The brochure seems to play down the difficulty or how good a shape one should be in before attempting this trail. To be fair, all the other hikers I saw (and I saw them all, passing me each day) did not seem to be having particular difficuilty.

My daughter and I had a great time. At our briefing Alvin explained the daily schedule. He was very knowledgeable and helpful during the 4 day hike as I was a little slow. The meals the chef made were incredible. The porters worked so hard carrying all of our stuff up to the camp to have it set up before we got there. Making it to the Sun Gate was a big accomplishment for me. The trip was awesome.

Extraordinary experience with extraordinary people. My friend and I did this trek May 2024. It’s was physically challenging but very rewarding. Our guides, Nilton and Victor were amazing. Nilton is our lead guide, he’s very knowledgable and knows a lot about his culture and it’s history. You don’t just go on Inca sites, you learn about them. Both him and Victor are very attentive throughout the trek and they were very supportive and encouraging. I really felt taken care of during this 4 days. Of course we can’t forget our amazing chef and our porters. They set up camp and have our food ready as soon as we wake up. They carry our stuff with smiles on their faces. The hard work that these guys do is nothing short of amazing. They cheer for us when we start the day and at the end of our day when we reach camp.

Unbelievable. Brilliant tour, brilliant guides (Juan Carlos and Rosita) who let you stop or slow down whenever you need, they tell stories and show you interesting stops along the way, they're funny, sweet, organized and helpful. The porters carry your belongings and sleeping bags, etc. and you really can't believe how much they can carry with no complaints. They also work so hard around the camp, and they clapped us every time we arrived at our lunch/dinner spots. The chefs, wow, cooked us some amazing meals, and there was always more than enough food. They provide you with snacks for throughout the day which is nice - and needed! Everything was just amazing and very well ran. I can't recommend this trip enough.

    Tour Details
    • Alpaca ExpeditionsOperatorWritten November 2024

The 4-day, 3-night Classic Inca Trail with Alpaca Expeditions typically returns to Cusco in the evening on the final day. After visiting Machu Picchu in the morning and taking a train from Aguas Calientes, you can expect to arrive back in Cusco around 7:00 PM.

    • C

      Carolyn

      TravelerWritten November 2024

In the tour transport drop-down information it says hike ends on day 3 and get bus etc but it's a 4 day hike? That's confusing because I thought it meant you're hiking walking for 4 days. If you elect to go on the vista dome train does that mean you get back a bit later to Cusco or is the bus the same bus for the expedition train AND the vista dome or does one bus leave earlier? We have to get to the airport and need the earliest bus. I just wanted to make sure that the tour is 4 days not 3.

    • Alpaca ExpeditionsOperatorWritten November 2024

The Inca Trail is indeed a 4-day trek. You will hike for four days, with the final day culminating in a guided visit to Machu Picchu. Day 4 typically involves an early morning start to reach the Sun Gate and explore Machu Picchu, followed by your return journey to Cusco via train and bus. If you opt for the Vistadome Train, you'll have a more scenic return journey compared to the Expedition Train. However, both train options arrive in Ollantaytambo, from where a shared bus will take you back to Cusco. The bus schedule is aligned with the train's arrival times: Vistadome generally departs slightly later than the Expedition Train, meaning you'll arrive back in Cusco a bit later. If you're on a tight schedule and need the earliest possible return to Cusco for a flight, choosing the Expedition Train might be a better fit, as its bus departs earlier.

I have a question about the transportation and hotel after the hike. I see that you provide a pick up service from our Cusco hotel to the start of the trail. Once the hike is complete is where I am confused. You take us to a hotel for the evening. Is this a different hotel than the one I chose to stay in Cusco, and if so, is this hotel night included in the price. Then you transport us back to the hotel of our choice in Cusco?

I am wondering what is the standard rates for tipping the porters and guides?

    • Alpaca ExpeditionsOperatorWritten January 2024

Many hikers ask us about tipping at the end of their tour with Alpaca. Tipping is of course 100% voluntary and should only be done if you feel like your guide, porters and chef have done an amazing job for you. Generally groups give collective tips that are shared between the cook and all porters including the head porter and is usually given on the last night of the trek. If the group pools together money and at the end each porter receives 60 soles and your cook receives double that, 120 soles, they will end with a great tip. Often, the tip for your guide is done personally and is generally 50 soles per traveller.
