Itinerary
- Day 1
Bran
Start your day in Sinaia by checking out Peles Castle, which served as the summer home for Romania's royal family. The castle sits in a nice setting with mountain views around it. From there, you'll head through Prahova Valley toward Bran Castle, and the drive takes you past several mountain resorts where you can see the Bucegi Mountains. Once you reach Bran Castle, you'll walk through this 14th century fortress that many people call Dracula's Castle. Grab lunch at a local restaurant and try some traditional Romanian dishes before heading back.

Biertan - Sighisoara
You'll start in the Transylvanian village of Viscri to see its UNESCO-listed fortified church. Walking through the medieval streets gives you time to take photos and get a real feel for the place. After that, head to Biertan to check out another impressive fortified church surrounded by Saxon-style buildings. Later, you'll reach Sighisoara, a UNESCO site and birthplace of Vlad the Impaler. Take a walking tour through the citadel to visit the Clock Tower, Church on the Hill, and Vlad's birthplace. The rest of your day is yours to spend however you like.

Maramures
Your day focuses on the Maramures region, starting with the Bogdan Voda wooden church, which sits right in the middle of the village instead of on a hilltop like most churches do. Next, you'll visit the Museum of the Peasant Woman in Dragomiresti, housed in a traditional stone, wood, and adobe building. Inside, you'll learn about local heritage and how peasant women played a role in keeping Christian faith, customs, and traditions alive in this region.

Maramures Villages
This day takes you through several important Maramures villages and their UNESCO-listed churches. Start in Bârsana to see its UNESCO church sitting in the valley of the Iza River. Continue to Sapânta, famous for its colorful painted cemetery with unique designs. Then head to Deseşti to check out the Church of St. Paraskeva, another UNESCO site. Finish up in Sârbi village, known for its traditional wooden gates and a 100-year-old working water mill where locals still grind corn and make horinca, a traditional plum brandy.

- Day 5
Tihuța Pass
You'll travel through Tihuţa Pass, a mountain route that sits at 1,201 meters elevation in the Bârgău Mountains. This pass connects the Transylvania and Bukovina regions and is part of European Route 58. The road here is paved and marked as DN17, making it fairly straightforward to drive through, and it offers nice views of the surrounding mountain landscape.

Bucovina Painted Monasteries
Three painted monasteries in Bucovina are on your itinerary today, and all three are UNESCO World Heritage sites recognized for their unique exterior frescoes. Begin at Voronet Monastery, often called the 'Sistine Chapel of the East,' built in 1488 with its signature 'Voronet blue' frescoes covering the walls. Move on to Moldovita Monastery, which represents Byzantine art with religious scenes painted across its external walls. End your day at Sucevita Monastery, which shows the peak of Moldavian medieval religious art and the creativity of that period.

- Day 7
Bicaz Gorges
You'll visit Neamt Fortress, a major medieval landmark representing Moldavia's golden age under Stephen the Great. Built in the 14th century at 480 meters altitude, this fortress withstood numerous Ottoman and Polish attacks throughout its history. After that, head to Bicaz Gorges, one of Romania's most striking natural features that connects Moldavia and Transylvania. While there, you can see Red Lake, the country's most popular natural dam lake, along with several peaks including Hasmasu Mare and the Ghilgos Massif.

Harman Fortified Churches
Two fortified churches near Braşov are your focus, both UNESCO World Heritage Sites showing Saxon medieval architecture. First, explore Prejmer Fortified Church, just a few kilometers from Braşov, which survived 50 sieges throughout its history and was conquered only one time. Then visit Harman Fortified Church, 10 kilometers from Braşov, one of the best-preserved Saxon fortifications with roots going back to the 13th century.
