Itinerary
- Day 1
Arusha to Rongai
You'll drive from Arusha to Marangu Gate for registration, then transfer by Land Rover to Rongai (about 1.5 hours). The trek starts at Nale Moru village through maize and potato fields, moving into pine forest. You'll reach the first campsite at the moorland zone edge with views across the Kenyan plains. Expect around 7km and 3-4 hours of trekking.

- Day 2
Rongai to Kikelewa Caves
After breakfast, you'll make a steady ascent toward the Second Cave at 3,450m/11,319ft. Kibo Peak and the Eastern ice fields start coming into view. The route leaves the main trail across moorland toward Mawenzi's jagged peaks, and you'll reach the campsite in a sheltered valley near Kikelewa Caves at 3,600m/11,811ft. Plan for about 15km and 5-7 hours of trekking.

- Day 3
Kikelewa Caves to Mawenzi Tarn
This day brings a short but steep climb up grassy slopes with superb circular views that really give you a sense of the wilderness. You'll reach Mawenzi Tarn at 4,330m/14,203ft for camping. Spend the rest of the day resting or walking around the area to help your body adjust to the altitude. The trek covers approximately 10km and 5-7 hours.

Landmarks Mawenzi Tarn - Day 4
Mawenzi Tarn to School Campsite
Early morning, you'll trek across the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to reach School Campsite at the foot of the Kibo crater wall. This section takes about 8km and 6-7 hours. You'll have the rest of the day to rest and prepare yourself mentally and physically for the final summit push.

- Day 5
School Campsite to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut
A very early start at around 1:00 am gets you moving for the summit attempt. You'll trek through loose volcanic scree to Gillman's Point at the crater rim, rest briefly there, then continue on to Uhuru Peak (about 3 hours total). Watch the sunrise, get your photos, then descend to Horombo Hut for the night.

Horombo Hut to Arusha
After breakfast, you'll descend from Horombo Hut down to Marangu Gate. Your driver will meet you there, and then you'll head back to your hotel in Arusha.
