What people love about Hiking & Trekking Tours in Africa
- Walking in Morocco - Atlas to Atlantic
Had a brilliant time, again would really recommend Ahmed as a guide he was fantastic and will definitely book with Explore again sometime.
- 12 days Madagascar Discovering tour package
This was the best 12 days I have ever spent on a safari; as a first-timer in Madagascar. I had the chance to see the most destination, like the Tsingy de bemaraha, the fantastic sunset at the Baobab avenue, and the fossa lemures. This trip requires a bit of fitness from the hikes and walks through the rainforest; plan to have comfortable shoes and some warm too. Do not forget to park some swimsuits if you are a beach person like me. The beach at IFATY are endless, and you can watch the whales too if you take a boat ride
- Kilimanjaro - Machame Route & Zanzibar Adventure
Definitely worth it every second!
What our customers ask about Hiking & Trekking Tours & Trips in Africa
What are the best hiking trails in Africa for various skill levels?
Africa's hiking trails range from accessible paths to demanding mountain ascents. The Machame Route on Mount Kilimanjaro takes intermediate hikers through varied landscapes while the Marangu Route welcomes beginners with a gentler ascent. The Northern Circuit boasts a 95% summit success rate thanks to its gradual climb that helps with altitude adjustment. For experienced climbers the Lemosho Route presents technical challenges along with scenic views. The routes span 5-10 days with daily distances of 5-15km through ecosystems ranging from rainforest to high-altitude desert. As one TourRadar traveler notes: "The Machame Route was challenging yet rewarding offering breathtaking views and a true sense of adventure."
What type of accommodation can I expect on multi-day hikes in Africa?
Accommodations on Kilimanjaro vary by route. The Marangu path provides basic mountain huts with dormitory-style setup. Other popular routes like Machame and Lemosho use two-person dome tents at designated camping areas. Before and after the trek most tours include 2-3 nights at hotels in Moshi such as the Panama Garden Resort or Springlands Hotel. According to a TourRadar traveler review: "The Mountain crew made us really feel comfortable and safe. Camp crew made sure they get to camp early and set up the camping compound appropriately."
How physically demanding are African mountain treks?
Mountain treks in Africa require solid fitness levels particularly for Kilimanjaro climbs. Summit days stretch 12-15 hours with elevation gains exceeding 1,200 meters often starting at midnight in cold conditions. The Machame Route covers 10-12km daily at elevations between 3,000-4,600 meters. While technical skills aren't always needed altitude poses the main challenge. A TourRadar traveler shares: "The summit night was extremely challenging - my guide was superb with the right balance of support and tough love. You need to be prepared for altitude which is the biggest challenge rather than technical difficulty."
What is the best time of year for hiking in Africa?
The prime hiking seasons for Kilimanjaro run from June to October and December to March when weather conditions are dry and visibility is good. The Machame Route shows its best colors during these months with higher success rates for reaching the summit. January and February bring the most favorable summit conditions with mild temperatures and clear skies. Avoid March to May and November when heavy rains make trails challenging. As noted by a TourRadar traveler: "We summited in January with perfect weather conditions - clear skies for sunrise at Uhuru Peak made every step worth it."
How much does a guided trek in Africa typically cost and what's included?
Kilimanjaro guided treks cost between 1,650 USD and 3,700 USD for 6-10 day expeditions averaging 350 USD daily. The price covers professional guides porters cooks all meals camping equipment park fees and rescue services. Additional expenses include recommended tips (200-300 USD per climber) gear rentals and hotel stays before and after the trek. A TourRadar traveler notes: "The price was worth every penny - the professionalism and dedication of the entire crew especially the guides and porters made this an unforgettable experience."
