What people love about touring Scottish Highlands solo
- 3-Day The North Coast 500 Small-Group Tour from Inverness
Thank you so much for the FANTASTIC NC500 tour with Willie (his first as well) The transportation, food and other guests on the "bus" were everything and more. I bonded with all of them and could not have asked for a better experience! Extra shout out to Lisa who runs the B&B I stayed in on the second night!!!!! she was the best :)
- 3-Day Lewis, Harris and the Outer Hebrides Small-Group Tour from Inverness
Fabulous ‘first time’ mini coach break plus my first visit to the outer Hebrides with my 83 year old mum. The tour guide, Emily, was amazing, Eloquent, informative and passionate without overdoing the academics! In addition, I preferred the small group where we got to know each other and had fun chatting. I most certainly would recommend Rabbie’s tours. They took excellent care of us.
- Winter Highlands & The Isle of Skye
Our tour guide, Louise, was absolutely fabulous! She was friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. She was definitely 5-star! The tour was very nice. We saw a lot, enjoyed good food and accommodations. Wonderful 3 day tour.
What our customers ask about Scottish Highlands Tours for Solo Travelers
How social are Scottish Highlands Mountain group tours for solo travelers?
The groups stay small with 8-16 travelers creating a comfortable social setting. About half the participants typically travel alone making it natural to form connections while exploring Glen Coe or the Isle of Skye. Highland Explorer Tours keeps their groups intimate with stays at local spots like the Caledonian Hotel in Portree and Ullaviews Guesthouse where travelers can easily connect. As one TourRadar traveler noted: "The small group size made it personal and comfortable and not rushed."
Which areas of the Scottish Highlands are best suited for solo travelers?
The towns of Portree Isle of Skye Fort William and Inverness welcome solo travelers with active social scenes. Each offers a mix of accommodations from the welcoming Skye Inn to the upscale Kingsmills Hotel. You'll find group activities ranging from hikes up the Old Man of Storr to boat excursions on Loch Ness. As shared by a TourRadar traveler: "Portree was a highlight with great seafood restaurants and friendly local pubs where we could all gather in the evenings."
What's the typical accommodation setup for solo travelers?
Tours use a mix of welcoming B&Bs and 3-star hotels such as the Caledonian Hotel in Portree and Hebridean Guest House in Stornoway. You can book a single room for an extra fee or share a twin room with another solo traveler. As one TourRadar traveler shared: "The B&Bs were quaint but very clean and the hosts were amazing with wonderful breakfasts."
What's the best time for solo travelers to visit the Scottish Highlands?
The social scene peaks from May to September with July and August drawing the most solo travelers. Local events like the Portree Summer Festival and Highland Games add extra chances to meet people. Booking data shows August as the most popular month for solo travel. A TourRadar traveler shared: "Traveling in August meant lots of other solo travelers and great weather for outdoor activities."
What should solo travelers pack for a Scottish Highlands tour?
The essentials include waterproof layers comfortable hiking boots and a day pack for excursions. Tours generally limit luggage to 20kg. Weather-resistant gear proves useful especially on the Isle of Skye where conditions change quickly. A TourRadar traveler advised: "Weather can be unpredictable in the Highlands - I was glad to have waterproof gear when exploring the dramatic landscapes of Glencoe."

Most tours balance structured activities with 2-3 hours of daily independent exploration in towns like Portree Fort William and Inverness. When staying at places like the Kingsmills Hotel in Inverness evenings are yours to discover local dining and nightlife. A TourRadar traveler noted: "Our guide gave great suggestions for free time activities while ensuring we saw all the main highlights together."
