If you're up for something special take the ferry from Kagoshima to Yakushima Island - 2 hours by hydrofoil or 4 on the regular ferry to see thousand-year-old cedars that inspired Princess Mononoke. The Shiratani Unsuikyo trail takes 3-4 hours and shows you the best of the ancient forest.
