As two german girls (20 and 21yo) we’ve been a bit lost in the huge area of Mascat. Very spontaneously we booked the desert tour and exactly 24h later we were picked up at our hotel by our guide Yousuf. The trip was totally worth it! We had a wonderful time and with Yousuf a guide with whom we really connected. He answered all of our questions about the Arabic culture and also showed big interest in our life in Germany and our studies. The desert for sure is a must-see in Oman. It is very peaceful and when you watch the sunset on the dunes you don’t want to leave. We slept under the stars and in the morning got to feed some baby goats and camels, also we did camel riding. On the way back to our hotel we went to Wadi Shab. In the Internet it is said that you need to see this famous water cave and now we know why! Afterwards he also showed us around in Mascat and Matrah and got us traditional arabic food. He was very helpful for us, also the days after the desert tour. Also we could decide by ourselves which things we’d like to see on the way to the desert and back. We are sad to leave, not only because of the beautiful nature of Oman but also because we really found a funny friend in Yousuf. For everyone who is still thinking about booking this tour: We are two students with not much income but this time was worth every penny! We hope you have a great time.

Best tour companies for Oman tours
Both MTA and GidOman have built solid reputations as reliable tour operators in Oman, with our travelers consistently sharing positive experiences. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque appears frequently in their stories, along with visits to the ancient forts of Nizwa, Bahla and also Sur by the coast. What really stands out in traveler feedback is how personal these tours feel, thanks to guides like Yousuf, Ilyas, Adam, Jamal and also Aziz. They're often mentioned by name in reviews for going beyond the usual tourist routes. One customer wrote about how Yousuf took a detour to show them a hidden corner of Wadi Shab that most visitors miss. The itineraries blend well-known sites with local experiences - you might find yourself swimming in crystal-clear wadis in the morning, exploring a 17th-century fort by afternoon and camping under the stars in Wahiba Sands by night. Our travelers particularly value how these companies handle the logistics while leaving room for spontaneous stops and authentic interactions with local communities. The accommodations get good marks too - they're comfortable without being overly luxurious, which fits well with Oman's natural character. Several customers mentioned appreciating how the guides share genuine insights about Omani culture, traditions and also daily life, rather than just reciting historical facts.
Best places to start your Oman tour
Muscat serves as the natural starting point for most Oman explorations, with 74 of our tours kicking off from this cultural hub and main entry point. Some specialized trips begin in southern Salalah or link up with Dubai for a wider Gulf experience. Looking to join? Book around 73 days ahead, particularly from October through March when mild weather makes desert exploration really pleasant. Those cooler months bring comfortable 25°C (77°F) days - perfect for mixing cultural visits with dips in wadis and mountain trails. Summer gets quite hot, but it opens up opportunities for early morning coastal wildlife spotting and some excellent deals on upscale hotels. Our photographers love capturing the dramatic mountain scenes at Jebel Shams and the bustling ancient markets of Nizwa throughout the year.

Spring brings ideal conditions for exploring Oman's mountains and desert, with our multi-day trips blending Jebel Shams excursions and desert camping consistently earning praise from visitors. Our travelers especially value Wadi Shab during this season, where you'll navigate through linked pools until discovering a waterfall hidden within a cave. The coastal route takes you to Ras al Jinz, where green turtles nest on moonlit shores, while inland paths lead through Nizwa's traditional souqs to observe silver artisans at their craft. What makes these spring tours special are the genuine local connections - you'll dine in Omani homes, visit mountain beekeepers to understand traditional honey production techniques, and also spend nights by campfires in the Wahiba Sands. Our itineraries naturally combine cultural experiences with nature exploration, from peaceful wadis to tucked-away sections of Mutrah Souq. The guides have perfected the timing for visits to spots like the crystal-clear Bimmah Sinkhole, and know precisely when to schedule turtle watching at Ras Al Jinz for the best possible experience.

- Summer 2026
The Omani summer tours have evolved smartly, with routes that maximize the cooler parts of each day. Early mornings take travelers to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque and Sur's traditional dhow yards, while afternoons focus on refreshing swims in Wadi Shab and Bimmah Sinkhole's crystal waters. Our tour groups appreciate how we time the visits to Nizwa's historic fort and ancient villages during the gentler morning light, saving mountain pools and wadis for when the heat peaks. The 5-day active tours combine cave swimming, wadi hikes and cultural exploration at places like Al Hamra, where 400-year-old mud brick houses tell ancient stories. For those seeking a more relaxed rhythm, our 10-day coastal journeys mix wildlife watching, dhow sailing and also beach time, taking full advantage of summer's calm waters.

What our customers ask about Oman Tours & Trips
What brings travelers to Oman?
You'll find Oman's really different from other Gulf countries with this amazing mix of untouched nature and real cultural experiences. The landscapes will blow you away - there's the massive Jebel Shams mountain reaching up 3000m and these incredibly clear pools at Wadi Bani Khalid that look almost unreal. What's really cool is how they've kept their cities authentic especially Muscat where they don't allow super tall buildings and have preserved all these beautiful old areas. The thing that really stands out though is how genuinely welcoming the Omani people are you can experience this firsthand during Bedouin coffee ceremonies in the Wahiba Sands. They've got great tourist facilities but it never feels crowded or overly touristy.
What cultural experiences can you join in Oman?
There's so many ways to dive into Omani culture and they're all really authentic. Ever been to a traditional cattle market? The Friday morning one at Nizwa Souq is fascinating watching local traders do business the old-school way. In Muscat you can learn to cook with the ladies from Sidab women's cooperative which is great because you're helping support local female entrepreneurs too. The Bedouin camps in Wahiba Sands are amazing - you'll get to enjoy traditional music while having dates and this delicious cardamom coffee. Don't miss Sur's dhow builders they're still making boats just like they did centuries ago. And up in Misfat Al Abriyeen you can check out these incredible UNESCO-listed falaj irrigation systems that mountain communities have used forever.
What natural areas can you visit outside the cities and how do you get there?
Getting to Oman's natural wonders is pretty straightforward with organized tours and 4x4 trips. Wadi Shab's hidden waterfall cave is worth the 40-minute hike while Bimmah Sinkhole's easier to reach with its amazing limestone pools. Want to experience the desert? Wahiba Sands camps are accessed by 4x4 from Al Wasil and you can go dune-bashing at sunset then stargaze at night. If you're into wildlife head to Ras Al Jinz turtle sanctuary between June and September to watch green turtles nesting. For something really special take a 4x4 up to Jebel Akhdar's rose gardens and ancient villages at 2000m - the views are incredible.
Which lesser-known routes do experienced travelers take?
The adventurous types often choose the mountain route through Wadi Bani Awf to Snake Gorge it's pretty dramatic with amazing views and you'll discover hidden villages like Bilad Sait. Taking the coastal road from Muscat to Sur past Bimmah Sinkhole and Fins Beach lets you swim in these pristine spots and visit traditional fishing villages. If you're after authentic markets and Bedouin culture the inland route through Ibra and Sinaw is perfect. These routes are great because you get scenic beauty cultural experiences and way fewer tourists than on the main roads.
