Muscat

East Coast

- Days 1-2
Muscat: Begin your journey in Oman's capital.
Visit the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in the early morning. Women need to cover shoulders and knees and bring a headscarf. Get there before 8:30 AM to avoid tour groups and high temperatures. In the evening head to Muttrah Souq when it's cooler and locals are out shopping. If exploring alone stick to the main pathways as the small alleys can be confusing.

Coastal Journey to Ras Al Hadd (340 km):
Follow the scenic coast and stop at Bimah Sinkhole. Bring water shoes since the rocks get slippery. It takes about 90 minutes to reach Fins Beach. Pack food because restaurants are scarce. Your final stop is Sur's dhow building yard to see traditional boat crafting in action.

Wahiba Sands Desert Experience:
Leave early for the 2-hour drive to Wadi Bani Khalid. If you plan to swim bring modest swimwear. You'll need a 4x4 for the afternoon desert drive. Consider motion sickness pills for dune bashing. Pack warm clothes for the cold desert nights.

Nizwa via Sinaw (280 km):
Start at Sinaw's traditional morning market where local Bedouin traders meet. Visit Birkat Al Mouz village but wear closed shoes for the uneven ground.
- Day 6
Mountain Adventures:
Get to Jebel Shams early for the best views of Oman's "Grand Canyon." Stay back from the edges at viewing platforms as there are no railings. Visit Jabreen Castle in the morning before the afternoon heat hits at 2 PM.

Return to Muscat:
Start at Nizwa Fort when it opens at 9 AM. The towers offer great photo spots but watch out for steep stairs. Note that the Amouage Perfume Factory closes on Fridays and Saturdays.

Salalah Region:
Take a morning flight to Salalah for better prices. Visit the Heritage Souk before noon when it's busiest. Wear sturdy shoes at Wadi Darbat because of slippery rocks near waterfalls. Visit Mughsail Beach's blowholes during high tide for the best show.

Departure:
Plan for 2 hours at Salalah International Airport before your flight.

Muscat to Jebel Shams
Begin at 7:30 AM at the Grand Mosque. Women should bring headscarves and wear ankle-length clothing. Take a 3-hour drive to Jabreen fortress with a stop at UNESCO-listed Bahla. Switch to 4x4s for Jebel Shams. Visit Al Hamra village to see traditional mud architecture. Bring good hiking shoes if you plan to tackle the mountain trails.

Jebel Shams to Nizwa
Start with Al Hamra's private museum. Move on to Misfat a stone village nestled in the mountains. Visit Nizwa Fort's tower for city views but go early to avoid the midday sun. The souk is best in late afternoon when locals shop for crafts and silver.

Bedouin Markets to Desert
Head out early for Sinaw's morning market where Bedouin women sell handicrafts. Visit Wadi Bani Khalid's green pools. Bring swimwear but dress modestly. Take a 4x4 from Al Wasil to your Wahiba Sands desert camp. Consider motion sickness pills for off-road driving.

Desert to Coastal Sur
Travel from the quiet desert to Sur's busy dhow shipyards. Stop at Wadi Shab for a 45-minute hike and swim. Bring water shoes for rocky terrain. Note that scrambling over rocks is required. Take a 3-hour scenic coastal drive to Muscat.

South to Salalah
Browse Barka's traditional market. Visit Nakhl fortress and Ain-Thowarah hot springs. Fly to Salalah and check into your beach resort. The next day explore ancient Taqa fishing village and Sumharum ruins. Morning light is best for photos in Mirbat.

Salalah Exploration and Beach
Start at Al Balid archaeological site at 8 AM before it gets hot. Tour Al Haffa's old town and key landmarks. Spend afternoons at your resort beach. Dedicate a full day to beach relaxation. The sea is calmest in the morning.

Visiting the Sultanate of Oman ???????? was my old dream. Primarily, I want to note that for a full acquaintance with this amazing country, the help of a qualified specialist is required. I was very lucky to choose "GidOman” , and Ilya, became my tour guide in May this year ,he is a wonderful conductor who loves this country very much and knows it well. “GidOman” developed our excursion program in advance and we traveled around Oman from Muscat to Salalah for 14 days, visiting the most interesting places, spending the night in authentic and very comfortable hotels that booked in advance by GIdOman tour company . Together with the guide we traveled a long distance, visiting all the most famous and popular sights (including those which are under the protection of UNESCO). We visited a lot of amazing places such as Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid, colorful ancient cities and forts (Al-Hamra, Niza, fort Bahla, Misfat, Sur, Jabrin Castle, etc.), unique natural places (Bimmah sinkhole,Omani Grand Canyon, mountain ranges, oases, caves). Also we spent the night by the ocean near sand "sugar" dunes where I observed the most beautiful starry sky at night and rode on the dunes of the Wahiba desert. During the trip there always was an opportunity to swim in clear crystal sea water on an excellent beach. A visit to the island of Masirah in the Arabian Sea deserves special attention. GidOman bought ferry tickets in advance and we ended up on a paradise island with wonderful white beaches, unique nature and climate (I also recommend it). After our arrival in Salalah, Ilya provided me with a wonderful 2 day tour in the Dhofar region with a visit to different locations such as the ancient city of Samharam, Taka Castle, incense tree plantations, the Incense Museum and much more. I would especially like to note the decency and responsibility of the guide, his ability to work with people and his sincere desire to show tourists as many sights as possible, even beyond the main program.
