What people love about Japan Tours
- 9D Splendid Japan with Nagoya (private 3 star hotel rooms)
We had an awesome time with Stunning Tours on our trip to Japan. The tour guide was excellent, and helped us to have the best trip possible.
- 13-Day Japan Tour: Tokyo, Mount Fuji, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka & Beyond
Overall, the tour was unforgettable. The highlights: our tour guide, Alan, was amazing with his in-depth knowledge of Japan language/culture/history and handled obstacles with humor and grace (such as when the sumo wrestler training was cancelled, so instead he offered different options). He was quick on his feet to provide alternative sight-seeing options or alternative modes of transportation if we were unable to complete the scheduled hikes. He also was willing to take our tastes and interests in mind and always willing to help guide us in transportation in case we wanted to explore on our own. I highly recommend Alan for any trip and hope to travel with him again in the future. More highlights include that the hostels were all very clean, secure, and provided excellent help when requested. In fact, the WeBase hostel in Kamakura was my personal favorite and I will book them in my future travels in Japan. DragonTrip paid for all of the transportation costs, so taking any trains, subways, or buses (even in our independent time) were all covered, which made exploring the cities easy. The people I met on this trip were all great and we all plan to keep in touch/meet up again in another part of the world. Japan itself felt like a very safe, efficient, and clean country that I will visit again soon. Downfalls: Really, I think the main downfalls lie in the jam-packed itinerary that needs to be heavily revised. Personally, after the 5th shrine/temple, the rest started to look the same. We visited around 15 in total, which made the trip more go-go-go than I would have preferred, as we were running around trying to see all of the shrines/temples and other sights with little room for downtime. Because of this, many of our breakfasts, lunches, and snacks were based in the many convenient stores. I had planned on a healthy diet when visiting Japan, but instead was faced with the decision of grabbing a quick fry meal at a 7-eleven or not eating until later in the day. If there were less shrines/temple visits and less hikes (which were more than the 2 listed!), then there would be more room for enjoying a well-made meal or at least stops at a grocery store so fresh fruits/veg are available (we were literally asking for vegetables at the end of week 1!). Speaking of hikes, I was told by DragonTrip via email that I would not need hiking boots when I specifically asked. That was NOT true, as we hiked many trails to shrines/temples, and I would have really felt more secure if I had my hiking boots with me on the muddy/unstable footing hikes. Also, please consider including a homestay of sorts in your tours. I felt like during this trip that I didn't get much of a chance to interact with native Japanese people or to experience their actual day-to-day activities. Most people we encountered were somewhat comfortable with English, but one of my hopes for this trip was to practice my Japanese language skills. All in all, I'm glad I purchased this tour and hope that my review can help others who are considering visiting Japan and can be taken into consideration by DragonTrip for future tours. I'm planning on visiting Japan again next year to explore more of Kamakura and the islands.

Tailor Your Trip: Activities & Ways to Explore Japan
Japan's Kumano Kodo is pretty incredible - it's actually one of only two UNESCO World Heritage pilgrimage routes in the entire world. Walking these ancient paths is like getting a two-for-one deal: serious physical challenge mixed with a deeply spiritual experience. The trails meander through massive cedar forests and tiny mountain villages that feel untouched by time, connecting three sacred Shinto shrines before you finally reach Nachi Taisha, which sits right next to Japan's most impressive waterfall. What really makes this trek special? You get to sleep in actual temples and traditional ryokans as you go. After pushing yourself all day on the trails, there's nothing quite like sinking into a natural hot spring. It's honestly one of the best ways to connect with Japan's spiritual side while exploring some of the most beautiful, untouched wilderness the country has to offer.
If you want to see Japan without the headache of figuring out all the logistics yourself, guided bus tours are a game-changer. These trips usually run one to two weeks, which gives you enough time to really soak up each place instead of just rushing through. Spring tours are especially popular (and for good reason) - you'll catch cherry blossom season while smoothly moving between major cities and scenic spots that'll take your breath away. Here's what's great about bus tours versus just taking trains everywhere: you'll reach those remote, jaw-dropping viewpoints that public transport simply can't get to. Plus, you get that shared experience with other travelers who are just as excited to explore as you are.
See all Coach / Bus toursJapan's train system isn't just about getting from point A to B - it basically becomes part of your adventure. Those famous Shinkansen bullet trains are something else, zipping you between major cities at speeds that still feel futuristic. Your typical journey flows beautifully from Tokyo's non-stop energy to Kyoto's peaceful, historic temples, and if you're lucky with the weather, you'll catch some stunning Mount Fuji views along the way. But it doesn't stop at the big cities - you'll also hit charming mountain towns like Takayama and get to hang out with Nara's surprisingly friendly (and slightly pushy) deer. Most rail adventures wrap up in Osaka, where the food scene is absolutely legendary - they don't call it Japan's kitchen for nothing. The beauty of train travel is the freedom it gives you to explore at whatever pace feels right, all while experiencing what's honestly one of the world's most impressive transportation networks.
See all Train & Rail toursJapan's food scene is in a league of its own, and culinary tours give you the inside scoop through genuine local connections and experiences you'd never find on your own. Tokyo is usually where the food adventure kicks off - think hands-on sushi classes and early morning market tours where you'll see ingredients you've never heard of. Then there's Osaka's Dotonbori district, which is basically street food paradise showcasing all the regional specialties that'll make you question everything you thought you knew about Japanese cuisine. The variety of experiences is pretty amazing: one day you might be cooking with a local family in their home, the next you're learning about sake brewing at a centuries-old brewery, or discovering how Buddhist monks approach cooking in temple kitchens. Don't miss the tea farm visits in Uji - they add this whole other layer to understanding Japanese culture. As for where you'll eat, it's the full spectrum: cozy neighborhood izakayas where locals hang out, all the way up to those high-end places that'll spoil you forever. It's basically a complete deep-dive into one of the world's most sophisticated food cultures.

Japan tours work well for pretty much every type of traveler you can think of. If you're going solo, you'll love the small-group setup since it's perfect for meeting other travelers who share your interests. Couples tend to go for the mid-range tours that include private rooms in well-located 3-star hotels. This gives you the best of both worlds. You can take romantic evening walks through those beautifully lit districts while still enjoying shared experiences like cycling through Hiroshima's Peace Park or strolling through Kyoto's historic Gion area as the sun sets. Young adults usually pick the more active itineraries that mix cultural experiences with chances to meet other travelers. Senior travelers do really well with the relaxed Golden Route approach. The hotels are comfortable and close to train stations, and the scheduling stays flexible so you can adjust based on how you're feeling each day. Families find success with tours that blend kid-friendly activities like feeding those famous bowing deer in Nara with practical accommodations.

How do you get around Japan's cities efficiently?
Japan's train system is amazing and the bullet train (Shinkansen) is probably your best bet for zipping between major spots like Tokyo Kyoto and Osaka. If you're planning to use the trains a lot definitely grab a Japan Rail Pass - it'll save you quite a bit especially if you're covering lots of ground. Our Japan Classic 10-Day Tour folks love how smooth the bullet train travel is it really makes getting around so much easier. For getting around inside cities the local subway systems are super reliable and pretty easy to figure out.
What cultural experiences can you try and where's the best place to find them?
You'll find some really authentic experiences in Kyoto especially around the Gion district where you can join traditional tea ceremonies. Want something really special? Try staying at a Ryokan - these traditional Japanese inns are fantastic with their tatami rooms futon beds and relaxing onsen hot springs. Our travelers on the Classic 11-Day Japan Holiday absolutely love the Ryokan experience it's such a unique way to dive into Japanese culture. If you're interested in Buddhist culture you can try Shojin Ryori (Buddhist vegetarian meals) at temples in Koyasan and the Koya-san Choishi Michi trail is fascinating with its ancient stone markers that guided pilgrims.
Where can you find amazing places in Japan that aren't super touristy?
Takayama's really special tucked away in the Japanese Alps with this beautiful old town from the Edo period complete with sake breweries and local markets. Our Classic 11-Day Japan Holiday guests always mention how peaceful and culturally rich it feels. There's also this incredible place called Gassho Village in Gero Onsen where you can see these amazing old farmhouses that tell you so much about Japan's rural history.
What are some must-try local dishes and where should you eat them?
Osaka's known as Japan's kitchen and you've got to try the Takoyaki (octopus balls) and Kushikatsu (fried skewers) in Dotonbori. Over in Hiroshima they do this amazing version of Okonomiyaki with all these delicious layers. If you're in Takayama don't miss trying Hida Beef it's incredibly marbled and flavorful. You can find it at the Miyagawa Morning Market which our Classic 11-Day Holiday guests absolutely love. For real food enthusiasts our Japan Real Food Adventure tour takes you deep into regional specialties.
