3 Day Great Ocean Road & Grampians Itinerary, incl. Melbourne and Halls Gap
A three-day Victorian expedition covers 855km from Melbourne through coastal and mountain landscapes. The route includes 12 key destinations including Apollo Bay, Warrnambool, and Halls Gap, featuring guided hikes totaling 6.5km through diverse terrains.
- Day 1
Melbourne to Warrnambool via Great Ocean Road
Meet at the Immigration Museum in Melbourne at 7:20 AM for a 7:35 AM departure. The scenic drive takes you through Anglesea and Apollo Bay where you'll stop for lunch. If you get carsick bring some motion sickness tablets since the road has lots of curves. Your guided rainforest walk in Great Otway National Park is perfect for wildlife spotting. A recent visitor noted: "The guide was perfect at finding the right spots to see koalas and kangaroos in their natural habitat!" You'll spend time at the famous Twelve Apostles and Loch Ard Gorge before spending the night in Warrnambool. The total drive is 375km.
- Day 2
Warrnambool to Halls Gap
After breakfast you'll explore Tower Hill Conservation Wildlife Reserve set in an extinct volcano crater. Wear good walking shoes for the afternoon's 4.5km Pinnacle lookout hike in the Grampians. The hike is a bit challenging but the views from the top are incredible. According to a recent guest: "Halls Gap is a lovely and very friendly little town. The BBQ dinner on the second evening was a nice touch to the trip." Watch for kangaroos and emus near your accommodation around sunset when they often come out.
- Day 3
Grampians to Melbourne
3 Days in Victoria, incl. Great Ocean Road and Grampians
The Victorian coastline and mountains await on this three-day tour, visiting 11 destinations from Melbourne through Geelong's waterfront to the Grampians. Halls Gap's natural beauty, Aboriginal culture at Brambuk Centre, and gold rush history in Ballarat highlight the journey.
- Day 1
Melbourne to Apollo Bay
Leave Melbourne around 7:30 AM to avoid traffic. Stop at Geelong's waterfront for coffee and a quick break. Head to Bells Beach in Torquay where the Great Ocean Road begins. Get there before 10 AM to watch local surfers catch morning waves. "Eddie was a great guide and really went out of his way to educate us about the road trip, history and just general Aussie ways." Visit Kennett River to spot koalas in the eucalyptus trees near the cafe parking lot. The stretch between Lorne and Apollo Bay shows off the most stunning coastal views. Stop at Memorial Arch and various lookouts for photos. Spend the night in Apollo Bay where you can book a villa with beautiful ocean views.
- Day 2
Twelve Apostles to Grampians
Take an early morning guided walk in Great Otway National Park. Wear good shoes since morning dew makes the paths slippery. Get to the Twelve Apostles before 9 AM to avoid crowds and get the best morning light for photos. The eastern viewing platform offers the best photo opportunities. Visit Loch Ard Gorge then explore quieter spots like London Bridge and Bay of Islands. These places get only a fraction of the visitors that go to the Twelve Apostles. Around midday stop at Tower Hill Reserve near Warrnambool to see wild koalas and emus when they're most active. End your day at the Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld near the Grampians. A recent guest shared: "The accommodations and included meals were first rate. The five-course dinner at Wickens was exceptional – worth the journey alone."
- Day 3
Grampians to Melbourne
Drive through Serra Range to Halls Gap in the morning. Take the easy 15-minute walk to Boroka Lookout for incredible views. Visit Bunjil's Shelter before noon when the light is best for viewing Aboriginal rock art. The walk to McKenzie Falls is challenging but worth it. Plan for 1-2 hours round trip and bring water. On your way back to Melbourne stop in Ballarat and spend an hour exploring this historic gold rush town. The 90-minute drive to Melbourne should get you there around 5 PM before rush hour.
3 Day Victoria Cycling Itinerary, incl. Beechworth and Bright
The 73km Victorian rail trail beckons cyclists for three memorable days. Rolling from historic Beechworth through Myrtleford to charming Bright, riders stop at Pepo Farms and local wineries. Two nights' accommodation and guided cycling through varied terrain included.
- Day 1
Beechworth
Plan to arrive in Beechworth by early evening for your tour briefing and dinner. The drive from Melbourne takes about 3.5 hours, or you can opt for an Albury airport transfer ($120). You'll stay in the historic town center, surrounded by beautiful gold rush architecture. A helpful tip: bring warm layers for the evenings, which can get quite cool, particularly during autumn.
- Day 2
Beechworth to Myrtleford (43km)
Start your day with a filling breakfast before setting out on the Murray to Mountains Rail Trail. The first 20km offers an exciting downhill ride that's perfect for getting into your rhythm. One rider shared: "The trail was well organized with great support, making even occasional riders feel comfortable." The route includes 7km of moderate uphill sections, so consider booking an e-bike if you're worried about the terrain. Your afternoon features 16km of flat riding through peaceful farmland as you make your way to Myrtleford.
- Day 3
Myrtleford to Bright (30km)
Your final day brings an easy, flat ride along the Ovens River Valley, where you'll be nicely sheltered from the wind. Take a break at Pepo Farms to try their specialty pumpkin seeds. Your lunch includes special wine tastings at local cellar doors. The tour wraps up with a 5pm transfer back to Beechworth. This timing helps you avoid the strong afternoon heat that often builds up during summer.
