- Toubkal Trek (3 days)
I booked the trek up to Mount Toubkal and have just returned back from the three day trip. There were a few problems in advance of the trip (the company tried to change the price even though the original price was confirmed) but once on the trip I was fully satisfied. Although I booked to climb Toubkal the weather was poor and so I opted to take a valley trek for the three days. This was no problem and I think other people who did choose to climb only made it to base camp. Hassan organised these treks with Mustapha and Mohamed as guides. Each night I stayed in the very comfortable Road Oussagou and the food served there was filling and tasty. On the day hikes a basic but pleasant picnic lunch was provided. Even though I did not get the opportunity to climb Mt Toubkal I was satisfied with the company's services overall.

Took a risk and booked this tour on my own, was obviously apprehensive about going to Morocco on my own but this tour was absolutely amazing and one of the best experiences of my life. My guide Abdul was brilliant, spoke great English and was completely fine to walk at the pace i wanted to and was fine with taking breaks and taking photos for me. He answered all my questions about the Berber people/ way of life and the mountains. The mountains are absolutely beautiful, some of the best views i've ever seen. We also visited the waterfall on the last day which was really cool but did add on an extra 2 hours to the trek (worth it) I have never been so overfed in my life by Hamid the cook! I was served portions for 2 or 3 people with every meal of the nicest Moroccan food imaginable, huge salads, Tagine, cous cous, meatballs and lots of Mint Tea and coffee! The trek itself was easy on the first day but quite challenging for the second and third day, be sure to bring decent walking boots/trainers, some of the terrain is quite tricky and plenty of sleep descents. The accommodation is extremely rustic and simple, be warned there is no toilet or shower in the guesthouse in Tinzert! Bring hand sanitizer or your own soap! The guesthouse in Tizi Oussem is a lot better with a shower and decent toilet facilities. Would definitely do this tour again and strongly thinking about coming back next year to do the Toubkal mountain trek. If i could change one thing it would be to make the first day of trekking longer, we only walked for around 2.5 hours and then had all afternoon and evening with nothing to do in Tinzert.

What are the main highlights and must-see locations in the High Atlas Mountains?
The High Atlas Mountains feature North Africa's highest peak Mount Toubkal (4167m) the Ourika Valley and traditional Berber villages including Tijhza and Imlil. Visitors can explore the ancient Kasbah of Telouet see the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2260m and visit Lake Ifni - the only lake in the Toubkal region. Tours generally base travelers at traditional spots like Hotel Gomassine in Marrakech or local gites in mountain villages. A TourRadar traveler shared "Looking down on the rock-colored villages with their green fields and trees between barren looking hills was breathtaking."
When is the best time to visit the High Atlas Mountains for a mountain tour?
The prime season runs from April through October when conditions suit trekking and outdoor activities. Spring months (April-May) bring mild temperatures to the Imlil Valley while autumn (September-October) offers clear visibility for mountain views. A TourRadar traveler noted "We were lucky with the weather in April - could be chilly at night in the mountains but the sunny days were perfect for trekking." Winter (November-March) brings snow to higher elevations near Mount Toubkal though places like Riad Bouchahoud in Tijhza village remain open with heated rooms.
What type of accommodation can I expect during a High Atlas Mountain tour?
Options range from modern hotels in Marrakech to traditional mountain lodgings. The Hotel Gomassine in Marrakech's Guéliz area provides a pool and contemporary comforts while mountain accommodations like Riad Bouchahoud offer local character. Mountain stays typically feature simple clean rooms with shared facilities and classic Moroccan design. According to one TourRadar traveler "The gite is basic but adequate and they provide blankets. The staff at the gite were lovely and we managed to get some recipes from the cook."
What kind of food is served during High Atlas Mountain tours?
Tours showcase authentic Moroccan and Berber cooking with fresh local ingredients. Breakfast includes porridge and bread while trail lunches feature salads and tagines often delivered by mule to scenic spots. Evening meals at places like Riad Bouchahoud emphasize hearty home cooking. One TourRadar traveler noted "The food at the gite is fresh and healthy. The lunches on walking days were very tasty." Most dietary needs including vegetarian and vegan can be met. Additional village meals cost around USD 6-10 for lunch USD 8-19 for dinner.
What cultural experiences can I expect during a High Atlas Mountain tour?
Tours provide direct connections to Berber life through visits to traditional hammams tea ceremonies with local families and village exploration. Based at places like Riad Bouchahoud travelers can experience weekly markets cooking demonstrations and insights into local farming and crafts throughout the Toubkal region. A TourRadar traveler shared "Visiting a Berber family for tea bread and cakes was so welcoming. They were so generous with their smiles and humor."
How does transportation work during High Atlas Mountain tours?
Travel combines modern vehicles with traditional methods. Tours start with air-conditioned transfers from Marrakech's Hotel Gomassine to mountain villages like Imlil taking around 1.5 hours. A TourRadar traveler noted "Roads in Morocco are reasonably good and driving conditions in towns and plains are good. On mountain roads the pace is slower." In the mountains mules transport luggage between trekking locations. Most tours include all necessary transfers.
