Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Nuremberg

You'll board your ship and get settled into your stateroom in Nuremberg, Bavaria's second-largest city. The medieval architecture here is really something to see once you're walking around, with half-timbered houses, Gothic churches, and those impressive city walls that tell a lot about the place's history. The city has roots in its famous craftsmanship tradition, and you'll notice the World War II heritage throughout as well.

    Included Activities

    • One complimentary shore excursion in Nuremberg
    Landmarks/POIs
    Nuremberg Medieval City Walls
    Palace of Justice
    Zeppelin Field
  2. Day 2

    Bamberg

This morning you'll head to Bamberg, a beautifully preserved medieval city that's been around since 902. Walking through the baroque streets, you'll check out the 11th-century Cathedral and the Old Town Hall, which sits pretty on its twin-arched bridge. Don't skip trying the local rauchbier, the city's specialty smoked beer that's worth sampling.

    Included Activities

    • One complimentary shore excursion in Bamberg
    Landmarks/POIs
Cathedral of Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich II
    Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall)
    Alte Hofhaltung (Old Court)
    Neue Residenz (New Residence)
  3. Day 3

    Würzburg

You get to see Würzburg, a baroque city surrounded by Franconia's vineyards and fully restored after the war. The Bishops' Residenz palace is the big draw here with its sweeping staircase and Tiepolo frescoes covering the ceilings. After touring inside, you'll walk across the medieval Old Main Bridge and can head up to Marienberg Fortress, which overlooks everything.

    Included Activities

    • One complimentary shore excursion in Würzburg
    Landmarks/POIs
    Bishops' Residenz
    Old Main Bridge
    Marienberg Fortress
  4. Day 4

Wertheim to Main River Scenic Sailing

The town of Wertheim sits right where the Main and Tauber Rivers meet, and you can see the 12th-century castle ruins from different spots around town. Half-timbered houses line the streets there. Later, you'll sail through the Main River's scenic stretch, passing through the Spessart woodlands and past quaint villages, farmland, and castles that inspired the Brothers Grimm stories.

    Included Activities

    • One complimentary shore excursion in Wertheim
    • Scenic sailing on the Main River through Spessart woodlands
    Landmarks/POIs
    Wertheim Castle
    Pointed Tower
  5. Day 5

Rhine River Scenic Sailing to Koblenz

You'll sail through the Middle Rhine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where vineyard-covered hillsides and castles line both banks. The Lorelei Rock appears as you pass through that dramatic section. Then you arrive in Koblenz, a traditional German city with over 2,000 years of history, featuring cobblestone streets, the German Corner monument, and the historic Romanesque Basilica of St. Castor.

    Included Activities

    • One complimentary shore excursion in Koblenz
    • Scenic sailing through Middle Rhine UNESCO World Heritage Site
    Landmarks/POIs
    Lorelei Rock
    German Corner
    Romanesque Basilica of St. Castor
  6. Day 6

    Cologne

Cologne has Roman heritage visible in how the city's laid out and in ancient ruins you can still see. The 13th-century Gothic cathedral is the centerpiece, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with twin spires that you can see from far away. You'll have time to shop along Hohe Strasse, check out cologne boutiques, and climb the cathedral steps for views across the city.

    Included Activities

    • One complimentary shore excursion in Cologne
    Landmarks/POIs
    Cologne Cathedral
    Hohe Strasse
  7. Day 7

    Kinderdijk

You'll visit Kinderdijk in South Holland, a charming village known for its 19 remarkably preserved 18th-century windmills. The Waal and Merwede regions around here show what Dutch engineering accomplished with the polders reclaimed from the sea, and you can see why the Hans Brinker stories took hold in this landscape.

    Included Activities

    • One complimentary shore excursion in Kinderdijk
    Landmarks/POIs
    Kinderdijk Windmills
  8. Day 8

    Departure

It's time to say goodbye to the people you've met on the ship and head home. If you want, you can look into the available tour extensions to keep exploring Europe instead of heading back.

Our Rhine Getaway cruise was impacted by the flooding on the Rhine River, but the Viking team went out of their way to make our holiday the best that it could be under the circumstances, and we had a marvelous time. In fact, we have already booked another Viking cruise for 2025. We had the cheapest cabin option but there was nothing cheap about it. It was lovely and the cleaning crew were in there twice a day keeping it spotless. The food on board was incredible. I have never been so well fed. The staff were all cheerful and friendly and they worked very hard to make us all happy. Billy, our cruise director had a massive task presented by the flooding. He had to transfer all the guests from the Alruna to the Tialfi which involved a bus trip from Koblenz to Breisach. He travelled with us and made sure that it all went smoothly, then he remained on the Tialfi until the end of the cruise. He arranged busses to take us to the excursions that we were supposed to go to on the cruise and came along each time. On top of all that he had to deal with the guests some of which were not easy, but he remained calm and collected throughout. So top marks to Billy for a difficult job well done. The team on board the Tialfi did a great job of making us feel better about our altered itinerary. When we arrived from the Alruna they served mocktails at the door and had put a welcome card and bag of chocolates in every cabin. Every time we came back from one of our bus excursions, they would be waiting with either mocktails or macarons. Viking are simply amazing, and I am recommending them to all my friends.

This was our first Viking cruise and loved the River Cruise as there are less than 200 guests on board. The staff were friendly and very professional, the food was amazing and the Tours each day were special. Met some other guests on board who made it a fun experience - lots of laughs.
