I enjoyed the variety of places we went to giving a good overview. Not keen on Amsterdam as I prefer more country places but it was good to go around and learn more about the place with a guide. I enjoyed the canal rides and cycling in the place we stayed in the Arnhem area (new hotel apparently and was the best one). I loved the Keukenhof as well. Good guide but can't remember her name.

It was a very well coordinated and organized tour. We had some early starts which meant we were the first people to some attractions and pretty much had the places to ourselves. Which was really a bonus for palace gardens and museums. The structure was such that you could take part in active sightseeing -walking, cycling - or be more leisurely viewing from the coach. The director and driver were informative, fun and helpful. The people on the tour were a good mix of nationalities and easy to get along with although our backgrounds were very varied.

Crucevita was a nice sized boat. Excellent accommodations, clean everywhere, terrific food and good service. Marina, our cruise director, was very helpful. The journey was great. Nice to see all the castles and we enjoyed the stops. Suggestions would be to have more waiters and to improve the drink package. Meals took 1.5 hours which was a little long. Increase the variety of wine for the drink package. Offer wines from the region or even some spirit drinks at reduced cost.

Best tour companies for Netherlands tours
Looking at the feedback from people who've taken these tours, Cosmos does a solid job organizing their trips and packing good value into each day. The Tour Directors, especially Patrizia, get mentioned often for really knowing their material and managing the groups well. Though, not everything hits the mark - quite a few travelers mentioned they could skip the diamond center stop since it felt more like a shopping push than cultural experience. The Feniks barge situation is a bit more complicated. While some of our travelers loved gliding along scenic waterways with the friendly crew, others felt the cycling part needed work. The guided rides were too restrictive for experienced cyclists who wanted to explore at their own pace, and several mentioned the food was just okay - nothing special for a European river journey. It's worth noting that whenever travelers discuss the Cosmos tours, they consistently highlight the practical planning and good price point. But they also suggest adding more authentic local experiences and cutting back on the obvious tourist stops. With the Feniks, while the boat itself and crew get good marks, they might need to rethink their cycling format and perhaps step up their kitchen game.
Best places to start your Netherlands tour
Amsterdam naturally works as the main jumping-off point for Netherlands tours, with 30 of our most popular trips starting here in this canal-woven city. Some travelers like to kick off their Dutch journey from nearby cities - Antwerp offers 8 different departure options, Cologne has 5, while Bruges and also Brussels each give you 4 choices if you're keen to mix in some Belgian highlights. Looking at our booking data, you'll want to lock in your spot around 3.5 months (that's 109 days) before you plan to travel, especially for tulip season visits. The shoulder seasons - April-May or September-October - tend to give you great weather with fewer crowds. Winter brings its own charm with ice skating on frozen canals and cozy Christmas markets, plus you'll find much better deals on hotels and attractions. A public transport card is worth getting - it makes it super easy to explore both the big cities and those smaller towns where you'll see real Dutch life away from the tourist spots.

Best time to visit Netherlands
- Winter 2025 / 2026
Winter introduces visitors to a different Netherlands, with our popular cold-season tours making the most of this quieter time. Morning canal cruises in Amsterdam run with fewer crowds now, and guides love pointing out how the merchant houses from the 1700s stand even more clearly against winter's bright skies. At Zaanse Schans, travelers settle into snug demonstrations of traditional cheese-making, before heading to historic cafes for warming cups of hot chocolate. Winter brings special character to Rotterdam's tours, as the Market Hall becomes a central gathering spot filled with locals and seasonal treats. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum offer more intimate viewing experiences with lighter crowds, and visitors gain easy access to Christmas markets throughout Dutch cities. When conditions allow, tours include chances to ice skate on frozen canals, and walking routes take in the city centers' winter light displays. Evening schedules thoughtfully include stops at canalside restaurants, where visitors can enjoy Dutch winter classics like erwtensoep while watching the boats drift past in the early darkness.

The Netherlands really shines in spring, especially during tulip season when our 7-day cultural tours capture the essence of Dutch life. You'll start at Keukenhof Gardens where millions of tulips, hyacinths and daffodils create those classic Dutch scenes everyone loves. Many of our guests tell us their favorite morning is at the Aalsmeer flower auction, watching the fast-paced trading unfold. We've got a great route that takes you through Amsterdam's canals, then to Delft where local artisans show you traditional pottery making, and also Rotterdam with its bold new buildings. For those who love cycling, we run tours from Amsterdam to Zandvoort along the coast before heading inland through the bulb fields to Leiden, Gouda and also other charming towns. Our guides point out that early spring brings fewer crowds at places like the Rijksmuseum and Zaanse Schans, which means better photos and more relaxed visits.

Long summer days mean more time to explore, and our 7-day bike and boat tours make the most of it. Cyclists love our routes connecting Amsterdam with Zandvoort, Haarlem and also other coastal spots - you can take a beach break between cultural visits. Our travelers often mention how well the city sights mix with countryside riding. Another route takes you from Amsterdam's museums to Giethoorn, a peaceful spot they call the 'Venice of the North' with its car-free villages and thatched houses along quiet canals. We've designed tours through Holland's green heart, where you'll pedal past nature reserves and small villages before ending your days in Utrecht, Gouda and also other historic cities. The summer light is perfect for evening canal cruises in Amsterdam, and our guests love exploring the city neighborhoods by bike when the streets are warm and lively.

- Fall / Autumn 2026
Fall colors transform the Netherlands, and our tours adapt nicely to the season. Multi-day trips from Amsterdam let you combine Rotterdam's modern architecture with traditional spots like Giethoorn, where autumn mists add mystery to the car-free canals. Our travelers love cycling tours during this time - the paths are less crowded and temperatures perfect for pedaling between Haarlem, Delft and also Utrecht. Several routes blend cultural visits with countryside riding, taking you past the UNESCO windmills at Kinderdijk and through quiet villages where you can stop for hot coffee and Dutch apple pie. City-based tours give you time in Amsterdam's museums without summer crowds, plus day trips to spots like Zaanse Schans where traditional crafts continue year-round. Many guests choose combination tours that connect Amsterdam with Belgian cities, noting how autumn brings a cozy atmosphere to medieval Bruges and also Brussels.

What's the Best Way to Really Experience Dutch Culture Beyond the Tourist Spots?
You know what's great? Getting involved in real Dutch traditions! Head over to Zaanse Schans where you can actually see working windmills in action they're not just pretty pictures these structures really shaped Dutch history. If you're around on Thursday mornings the Gouda cheese market is something special you'll see centuries-old trading traditions happening right in front of you. And here's a cool tip visit Giethoorn it's called the Venice of the North and for good reason instead of roads you've got canals and everyone gets around in these quiet electric boats.
Where Can You Find Amazing Natural Areas Outside the Big Cities?
The Netherlands has some absolutely stunning spots once you leave the city buzz. Keukenhof Gardens is incredible it's actually called the Garden of Europe and you can easily hop on a bus from Amsterdam to get there. They plant about 7 million flower bulbs every year across 32 hectares which is pretty amazing when you think about it. If you're into cycling you'll love the dedicated bike lanes that connect rural areas to cities. The Cycling the Highlights of Holland tour is fantastic you get to ride through Kennemerland where you'll see everything from vast polders to these picture-perfect villages.
What Are Some Amazing Places That Most Tourists Miss?
There are some real hidden gems here! Giethoorn is this incredible village where canals replace roads and everyone uses electric boats to get around it's super unique. Then there's Muiderslot Castle it's this medieval fortress that's surprisingly peaceful despite being so impressive. You can actually visit it on the Tailor-Made Best Netherlands Tour with Daily Departure where you'll get a more personal experience away from the big tour groups.
