Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Puerto Montt/Puerto Varas to Chiloé

Starting from Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas, you'll head north into the Chiloé archipelago for your first day. Your morning takes you to Caulín Bay where black-necked swans, herons, and gulls populate the coastal wetlands. After checking out the birdlife there, you'll move on to Pañihuil Bay for a 40-minute observation cruise. This is where things get interesting because you'll see both Humboldt and Magellanic penguins in their natural habitat, along with sea lions, chungungos, and cormorants. You'll grab lunch at a typical local spot before settling in for the night.

  2. Day 2

    Tepuhueico Park

Today takes you 45 km south of Castro to Tepuhueico Park, where you'll walk through mature native forest with trees over 40 meters tall like larches, mañíos, coigües, and tepas. The trails here are excellent for spotting southern river otters, guiñas, Chilote foxes, pudu, and monito del monte since this area stays pretty undisturbed. Birdwatchers will want to keep an eye out for chucao, huet huet, and various woodpeckers. During your walk you'll come across the Bravo River waterfall, a 10-meter drop with caramel-colored water that flows into a narrow channel. After lunch at a local restaurant, you'll return to your hotel for the evening.

  3. Day 3

    Humedal Putemun

Following breakfast, you're heading to Humedal Putemun, which sits just 5 km from where you're staying near Castro. The birding trail here is easy and runs 2.3 km round-trip, taking about 27 minutes to walk. This wetland hosts over 60 types of aquatic and terrestrial birds. Depending on when you visit, you might catch straight-billed curlews and common curlews in spring-summer, Chilean flamingos in winter, or black-necked swans and spur-billed curlews from November through March. You'll pause at viewpoints along the route to watch for local wildlife. Lunch comes at a local restaurant, then you'll head back to the hotel.

  4. Day 4

    Chepu River

Leaving Castro heading north on the Pan-American highway, you'll drive toward the Chepu crossing. The Chepu River is one of Chiloé's main navigable rivers, and you'll travel through a wide valley running alongside it to reach Puerto Anguay. From there, you'll board for a two-hour upstream journey past the Great River and Coluco Lagoon. The water route takes you through sunken forests, wetlands, and dead tree patches rising from the water, creating something pretty distinctive. After the river portion wraps up, you'll have lunch at a local agroturismo property and then walk the native forest trails on the grounds. You'll return to Castro hotel by evening.

One of the best tours of my life! Everything was perfect! Before going, Marilda, the Tour agent, addressed my questions and adapted the tour to suit my needs. The guides, especially JP, were knowledgeable about the region's geography and history. The meals provided in the tour were excellent (the places we stopped for lunch, and even the box meal). And the landscape….Torres del Paine is one of the most beautiful places on Earth! Highly recommend this tour!
