Itinerary

  1. Day 1

    Ushuaia

    You'll arrive in Ushuaia and transfer to your hotel to settle in after the journey. The rest of the day is yours to walk around the city's hills and nearby areas at your own pace. This gives you time to acclimate before boarding tomorrow.

  2. Day 2

    Ushuaia to Beagle Channel

    The morning is open for wandering around Ushuaia on your own. By afternoon you'll head to the ship for boarding and a mandatory safety drill. After that, you'll sail through the Beagle Channel where you might spot albatrosses, whales, and dolphins as the ship moves toward the Drake Passage.

  3. Day 3

    Drake Passage

    While crossing the Drake Passage, your Expedition Leader covers safety briefings and environmental guidelines. The team helps with biosecuring your gear and gives lectures about Antarctic exploration, wildlife, and the region's history. It's a full day of preparation and learning as you head south.

  4. Day 4

    Antarctic Convergence to South Shetland Islands

    You'll cross the Antarctic Convergence where the water temperature drops suddenly as warmer currents meet Antarctic waters. This shift usually brings more marine life activity. Weather permitting, you'll land on the South Shetland Islands in the afternoon to start exploring Antarctica.

  5. Day 5

    Antarctic Sound

    The expedition heads into Antarctic Sound at the northeastern tip of Antarctica. Despite being in the north, it's brutally cold from winds and currents from the Weddell Sea. You'll see vast Adelie Penguin colonies at Hope Bay, check out Devil's Island, and take in the dramatic volcanic cliffs at Brown Bluff.

    The route heads west along the Antarctic Peninsula into the Gerlache Strait region. Your Expedition Leader and Captain choose activities based on current conditions. You might do Zodiac cruises in Paradise Bay, watch penguins nesting at Cuverville Island, see humpback whales in Wilhelmina Bay, or travel through the Lemaire Channel.

    Destinations shift based on weather and ice, so flexibility matters here. Evening briefings will tell you what's happening the next day. Onboard you'll have lectures, voyage recaps, wine-tastings, and spa treatments to round out the experience.

    Your Antarctic time culminates at the South Shetland Islands in the north. The Southern Ocean conditions are harsh, but wildlife thrives here. You'll explore ice-capped peaks, Deception Island's volcanic landscape with black sands, penguin colonies on Aitcho and Half Moon Islands, or historic Yankee Harbour.

    We loved our group tour with Explore. There were only 14 on the tour which is very manageable and everyone was very fun and sociable. Marcello, our guide, was a prince of a man. He was very engaged with each of us, very protective, and always made us feel welcome and that we belonged. He spoke English, Spanish and Portuguese, which made it very easy to travel with him. Our day guides, for our Buenas Aires walking city tour, was very knowledgeable as well as our guide for the Igazu Falls on both the Argentina and Brazil sides. All the places we stopped in Brazil were perfect... small town, island, and of course Rio! Personally would always prefer staying in higher end hotels, but what we had was fine. Fortunately I was able to stay 3 days before and 3 days after in hotels that were really nice and gave time to integrate other places into our adventure. I know it is challenging to have a big group eat together at a restaurant, would just want to make sure that all the options we had were good ones. I highly recommend this trip and would do it all over again!
