- Annette· August 2nd, 2025Way too much road time. Half the traveling would have been best. Just too much to try to achieve in each day. Arrived to hotel late, most nights and it was too late to see the city we entered at the end of the day. With the exce of Strasbourg, we would leave early each morning, without the opportunity to see the final city of the previous evening. Not enough time to each dinner, for 6 nights in a row, as North Americans do not eat at 7-9 pm!! What we enjoyed most was the Castle of Strasbourg, with the incredible museums! The Perrier Winery was good. The Carrières Illuminées was very good. We were exhausted at the end, and only because of the lack of sleep. Cut that tour in half.Show moreEuropamundo commented on this reviewWe’re truly sorry to hear the tour pace felt too intense for you. - GDGinger· July 1st, 2025I am going to relate why I went on this tour and one just needs to know what they want out of it. I knew going in it was fast paced, there would be no time to explore the cities but there were lots of the smaller places where a quick visit is enough. That being said, I flew into Marseille and immediately took a train to Lyon where I stayed 2 nights. I knew the tour wasn't going to give the opportunity to see this city properly and indeed, it became a mad dash in the old town on cobbled streets to get to the funicular to go up to the Basilica before it closed at 8pm so had a few minutes inside and a quick look at the view of the city and back down again to rush to the bus. It had been a long day and we made no toilette stops once we left Avignon until we got to Lyon - about 4 hours. That meant getting to the hotel outside the city centre after 9:30 pm so no food available there. Walked to the expensive convenience store to get some wine, cheese and crackers for the room. Not everyone was happy by this point. Whereas when I stayed in Lyon I saw the murals, walked thru the traboules, saw the Barthodi Fountain by the Town Hall, wandered thru the old town, visited St Jean-Baptiste Cathedrale and had a wonderful dinner at a bouchon. All of this was missed by the tour! I even took the train from Lyon to Annecy for a wonderful day. I then took a short flight to Bordeaux for 2 nights. On the tour Bordeaux is a 2 1/2 hour stop. I don't really know what the people on the tour saw while there as I went to Bar A Vin for wine and cheese. I had already seen so much of the city including the Cite du Vin Museum and went on a boat cruise one evening. After the tour got back to Paris we had a nice Novotel Hotel, we got in about 9pm. I liked that the bar downstairs had pizza so it was a relaxing night and a relaxing breakfast in the morning. I then took the train back to Marseille where I spent 2 nights. Again on the tour we arrived in Marseille at the hotel about 8pm. I took the tram to Vieux Port to have moules and frites. I don't know what the rest of them did because, of course, we were leaving right after breakfast. While I was in Marseille on my 2 nights, I went to the La Major Cathedrale, Mucem, Fort St Jean, Le Panier, Rue Petit Puits, up to the Basilica and another wonderful dinner at Vieux Port. I even took the bus to Aix-en-Provence for the market and lunch. So here's why I was on the tour: it would have taken a lot of work to figure out how to go to some of the best places on this tour. Tours was dull, Lourdes was a good stop and there was ample time for the sanctuary. Carcasonne in my opinion, is overrated and very touristy expensive, although I liked wandering the cemetery. Arles was a good stop, the light show at Le Baux wasn't as good as others I've seen, although being in a cave was different. Avignon was a longer stop and unfortunately I had a really terrible steak there for lunch, the only bad meal I had in France. I didn't go into the Palace of the Popes or out on the Bridge because I didn't want to pay admission. It was very hot. I feel the tour took a real turn for the better after Lyon. Tourus was a charming small town, Beaune was all about the wines of Burgundy - for sure some of the best! I didn't go to the museums at Savigny Castle, but enjoyed the Chateau grounds and the wines. And we got into Dijon about 5:30pm, which made for a wonderful night to walk around the city and have a wonderful dinner in the city centre. Plus we had a cool hotel called Mama Shelter in a good location. Besacon for me was just a coffee stop, not much there. Colmar was such a highlight and we had almost 3 hours to enjoy this beautiful flower lined canal town. Not quite a beautiful as Annecy but close. Very German influenced and I had spatzel for lunch with Riesling wine. Riquewihr was just as delightful - both these towns were like stepping into a postcard. We had 4 white wine tastngs there. We got into the beautiful canal city of Strasbourg about 7pm and the hotel was close enough that I went for a walk to Petite France. My hotel room had a kitchenette so I went to a Carrefour and got wine and nibbles to relax with in my room. After breakfast we had time to walk around the city centre of Strasbourg to the amazing Cathedrale and even took a 1 hour + boat ride on the canals. It was an open boat and very hot brutal sun. So the tour allowed time for enjoying Strasbourg. In the Champagne region we went to Joseph Perrier Champagne museum, cellars and caves to learn so much and of course have a good tasting too. We stopped in Epernay for a walk about but didn't really see why we were there. Then it was a long bus ride to Paris but the hotel at the end was good. There were so many places I really enjoyed on this tour and it made it possible for me to see them. But, I am very glad I took the time to see Lyon, Bordeaux and Marseille on my own time. If I had only done the tour these cities would not have been enough time. Doing it over I would look into a shorter tour going from Lyon to Dijon to Strasbourg as the beautiful towns of Colmar and Riquewihr were delightful. Maybe Bordeaux to Lourdes could just be done separately thru good planning and Marseille of course was my best flight option. So knowing what I do now, I would have put it together differently. Linus was my main guide thru most of the trip and he was there to recite off some facts about each place before we arrived, to get us to the centre, to tell us when to get back on the bus. He was a very fast walker who couldn't wait to be off and see you later! Margeaux was French and had a relaxing walk with us. We changed guides and buses 4 times as people were joining and leaving this tour at different times and places. The most on the first bus was 29 (4 English speaking and 25 Spanish) and it was a good bus with charger and internet. On bus 2 we were down to about 15 or so, again comfortable space. bus 3 was so uncomfortable with little leg room and bus 4 was again very nice and we are now about 6-10 people. The hotels ranged from ok to very good. I was on a share a room and for 3 of the 7 nights I had a compatible roomie, 4 of the nights I had my own room so that was good being as the single supplement was too high, like half the cost of the tour. Sometimes the room was rather tight, other times spacious. But moving on every night it was all ok. Breakfasts were just the normal ham, cheese, croissant sometimes fruit, yogurt, hard cooked eggs. Just basic but again fine. All the hotels had elevators and were air-conned. Overall I'm rating the tour as good but my overall experience was excellent. This was my 4th time in France, Paris a couple of time, Normandy, Brittany, Mt Saint Michel on a trip on my own and another time it was the French Riviera of Nice, Cote d-azur, Cannes, Antibes, Monaco on my own. So I feel like I saw so much of the Wine Regions of France in these 2 weeks and I loved the food and wines so much.
