Arrival in Matrei am Brenner
Your train arrives in Innsbruck, then you'll head to Matrei am Brenner through the Brenner Pass. The guest card covers your S-Bahn connections, or you can drive if that works better. Meet Florian, your host, and settle in for dinner.

Matrei to Maria Waldrast
A 15-minute organized transfer takes you to Mieders in Stubaital. From there you'll follow an old pilgrimage route uphill past 15 chapels, each tied to different Rosary mysteries. You can stick to the Chapel Trail or pick a scenic alternative. The hike leads to Maria Waldrast at 1,638m, one of the highest and oldest pilgrimage sites in the Alps with views that stretch across the mountains. After resting, the descent back to Matrei gives you time to take in the landscape from a different angle.

Ochsenalm to Trins
An organized 10-minute transfer gets you to Ochsenalm below Maria Waldrast for stage two. The trail through Lange Tal valley starts gentle but gets steeper as you move through meadows and dwarf pine forests toward Blaserhütte. You'll summit Blaser peak, then choose between a forest path for easier going or shortcuts on the descent to Trins. From Trins station, bus #4146 takes you to Steinach and then the S-Bahn returns you to Matrei.

Trins to Obernberg
S-Bahn and bus #4146 get you back to Trins to continue from where you left off. This leg moves through a high valley to Trunhütte, where you'll ascend toward Eggerjoch and Eggerberg peak with its distinctive cross. The views here let you see back across your first two days and forward to what's coming. Multiple route options lead to Lichtsee at 2,100m through the Brenner Mountains. The descent to Obernberg can be steep or easier via Kastnerbergalm, then Almi's Berghotel offers refreshment before bus and S-Bahn take you back to Matrei.

Obernberg to Sattelbergalm
S-Bahn and bus #4145 return you to Obernberg for the hike through Fradertal valley, passing alpine huts before reaching Flachjoch. The Jubilee Trail (Route #80) follows ancient border paths between North and South Tyrol, crossing Wechseljoch and Kreuzjoch. You'll reach Sattelberg at 2,115m right on the Austria-Italy border, with views of the Zillertal and Stubaier Alps. On clear days you might spot Dolomite peaks and even see the starting peak from four days back. End the day at Sattelbergalm, your final night's lodging and a cozy spot to reflect on the week.

Sattelbergalm to Brenner
After breakfast at Sattelbergalm, hike Route #1 toward Steinalm, then take a steeper scenic trail down to Brenner. If time allows, detour to the Eisack waterfall. At Brenner there's coffee, cold drinks, and restaurants to choose from, plus the Brenner Outlet if shopping interests you. The S-Bahn carries you back to Matrei, where your tour ends or you can arrange an extension.
