- MJMichal· July 2nd, 2025Day 1 was the arrival in Cairo from our home. Pick up was great, check in at hotel was quick. Front lobby staff did not seem very friendly. Although rooms were non-smoking, we still smelled the cigarette smoke in both the kids room and our room. We were worried that we would cause more trouble to front lobby staff, so stayed quiet about it. Later in the evening we met with the main manager of the tour company to give us a briefing and finalize the fees and any other itineraries we were interested in taking. Ahmed was the manager, very kind and helpful. Hotel was Gewan hotel, buffet breakfast (7am - 11am) was included at hotel. Day 2 was 7:30am pick up to visit the Pyramids (so 30mins to grab breakfast at hotel). Excellent tour guide, Abdul O (an actual archaeologist!) Lunch included. After lunch went to the jewelry and papyrus making shop. After went to the Cairo museum. A bit of a long day but worth the sights and everything we learned. Kids we very tired especially inside the hot museum. Day 3 - checked out from hotel and pick up was for 10:50am to catch our flight to Aswan from Cairo airport for 1:00pm. This domestic flight was delayed and we eventually landed in Aswan at 5pm (good to inform those that may not know that there are no announcements of flight change, you have to read the screens located within the small waiting area. So stay alert and awake to know when to board the bus that will take you to board the plane on the tarmac… flight was with Neesma air and they only served a bottle of water for the hour and 15 minute flight. The flight delay caused us to miss our tour to Philae temple. But the entire time our guide, Medhat was waiting for us in Aswan, Medhat kept in touch via WhatsApp - which was very helpful. We got picked up in Aswan by Medhat and he stopped on the way to the cruise ship to get us some snacks and water, which was a lifesaver for the kids! We checked into the cruise ship, and Medhat gave us a quick briefing for the next coming days. Since it was too late to go see Philae temple, it was replaced with another temple visit on day 6. That evening we (2 adults and 3 kids under 14) hung out on the cruise ship while the rest of the the tour group (3 adults) went to Nuban village which they selected as an itinerary to do. Cruise ship had buffet dinner, which at first seemed bland in flavour but got a bit better over the next few days. Day 4 - we signed up for the Abu Simbel visit to our itinerary, which was a 3 AM wake for a 4am up departure. It was a bit of a drive - 3 hours each way. For breakfast, they gave us a breakfast bag to have on the way there - which was very appropriated! Returned to the ship by 1:30 and had lunch. The ship started sailing on that afternoon from Aswan to Kom Ombo. We visited the temple there and returned back to the ship for dinner. Day 5 - we woke up early at 4am for a 5am departure to visit the Edfu temple. Returned to the boat to have breakfast and sailed off to Luxor transiting through the locks in Esna. Later that afternoon arrived in Luxor and immediately went to visit the Al Karnak temple. Then went to the Luxor temple. Went to the scheduled essence shop. After this, we thought the horse carriage ride was included but it was extra - we were asked though if we wanted to go or not and signed up for a sunset horse carriage ride through the bustling streets and markets of Luxor. Well worth it! Returned back to the ship for dinner and was too tired to watch a belly dancing show - caught a glimpse of it. Day 6 - another early morning wake up at 3:30 AM for a 4:30 AM pick up because we signed up for a hot air balloon ride (bag breakfast - croissant, bun with cheese, boiled egg and juice). Hot air balloon ride was amazing but also a bit chaotic. A third party Videographer was a bit odd and when we refused to pay for his product, the lead guide got bitter with us. We just felt they were trying to scam us with a poor product. We were not interested in being recorded awkwardly. I personally don’t think this video service is necessary when we all have our own personal devices. Start of the balloons was chaotic and rushed to get up in time for the sunrise…they need to give us better communication. Kids were a bit nervous with all the shouting and hurrying. The pilot was amazing and the experience itself was amazing. Landing part was met with an angry local framer who came with a knife to cut our ropes and got into an argument with the crew on the ground. A bit scary as there was a lot of shouting, pushing and the framer also cut his finger and was bleeding. A scary thing for especially the kids to see. I agree, the crew on the ground worked hard but we were asked to tip them. This should be covered from our initial payment and not made to feel bad to keep on tipping. After the balloon ride we visited the Thebes temple, valley of the kings, Hatshepsut temple, the alabaster workshop, and Habu temple. Returned to the ship and had lunch. Checked out and waited in the lounge for airport pick up until 5pm to head back to Cairo. Back in Cairo - check out was 12pm next day and stayed in lobby for 5 hour for pick up. Since it was Sunday, we wanted to go to Church, but was nervous about travelling on our own via uber and we were not feeling well. The programme is packed with activities, but it is worth it. We have been lucky to have two great guides with us. In Cairo, we were with Abdul, who was great at explaining everything and providing further context during our visit to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Down the Nile, we were with Medhat.
