La Paz
After landing at El Alto, you'll head down to La Paz and get settled at your hotel. The altitude here is significant, so you'll want to take things easy and let your body adjust. Later, grab dinner at a simple local restaurant to ease into the food and pace of the city.

La Paz
A city tour helps you acclimate while getting oriented. Walk through Calle Linares market where vendors sell practically everything, then check out the coca museum to understand this important crop's history and cultural role. The afternoon takes you through different neighborhoods, from the Prado boulevard past the government palace and Plaza Murillo to San Francisco church with its imposing architecture. End the day with dinner at a typical local restaurant.

La Paz to Coroico
You'll drive through La Paz to Villa Fatima to see indigenous markets before chartering a minibus toward Coroico. The route crosses Abra de Cumbre pass at 4,750 meters with mountain views and a clear lake, then descends 3,000 meters into the Yungas. After that, cycle the famous narrow road known for its danger, passing waterfalls and tropical vegetation including ferns and bamboo. You'll reach Coroico at 1,750 meters by evening and settle into your hotel with a tropical dinner.

Coroico
Coroico sits surrounded by small hills covered in coffee, citrus, banana, and coca plantations. Later, explore the town and find a restaurant that appeals to you for dinner.

Coroico to Rurrenabaque
A comfortable bus takes you through lush jungle landscapes to Rurrenabaque, which sits at 320 meters with around 7,000 people. Many buildings here rest on stilts as protection during rainy season flooding. The journey takes 8 to 12 hours depending on road conditions, and you'll notice the atmosphere shifts considerably as you descend. Dinner happens at a tropical restaurant.

Rurrenabaque
From El Mirador del Gringo hilltop, you get a clear view over the town and surrounding countryside to get your bearings. Stop by the cathedral at Plaza 2 de Febrero before heading to dinner at a typical local restaurant.

Extended Jungle Adventure Begins
The 5-day extended jungle adventure begins as you head deep to see countless tree species and learn survival skills. You'll carry about 15 kg of luggage per person and hike with an Indian guide toward the abandoned mission San Antonio de Ixiamas and Rio Madiri's headwaters. Build a raft under expert guidance and navigate by water. Expect heat, rough terrain, and insects. Food cooks over a fire and you'll sleep directly in the jungle with its strange sounds around you. Look for giant trees, medicinal plants, and possibly rare jaguars or anacondas.

Abra de Cumbre to La Paz
Take the first bus to Abra de Cumbre pass where an interesting hike starts at a small guardhouse marking the national park entrance. You'll climb about 400 meters on wide paths, and instead of following the main trek to Coroico, switch to a summit offering views of numerous Andean peaks including Chacaltaya with its ice. The last sections involve easy climbing, though four-wheel drive vehicles can access the area. After, return to the lake and arrange vehicle transport back, or try hitchhiking on a truck. Head to La Paz for dinner.

La Paz
This free day lets you recover from the strenuous activities. Walk through the colorful markets, check out magnificent colonial buildings, or venture to simpler neighborhoods away from the city center. Copacabana
Travel to Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake at a deep blue and vast expanse with mountains in the background. Arrive at Copacabana, Bolivia's most famous pilgrimage destination and your boat trip starting point. Have the obligatory fish dinner at the harbor, then walk along the lake and climb Madonna Mountain Cerro Calvario in the evening. From the summit, wonderful views spread over the entire lake with Stations of the Cross and flower-made graves visible. Spend the night in Copacabana.

Copacabana to Tiwanaku to La Paz
On your return to La Paz, visit Tiwanaku, Bolivia's most significant pre-Columbian site. Legend says the god Con Ticci Wiracocha rose from Lake Titicaca here to create the sun, world, and people. This mysterious culture flourished from 100 BC to 1200 AD when it sat about 20 km inland from Lake Titicaca. Visible buildings date between 400 and 1000 AD with an estimated 20,000 to 12,000 inhabitants. See column monoliths, the Kalasasaya solar observatory, Akapana hill, and the Intipunto Sun Gate. Return to La Paz for dinner and overnight.

La Paz to Chacaltaya to Valle de Luna
Visit the world's highest ski resort at Chacaltaya by passing through El Alto for groceries, then climbing via a gravel road with narrow hairpin bends. You'll see llamas crossing paths and views of white peak Sajamas hundreds of kilometers away, plus Lake Titicaca below with extremely colorful debris fields from high iron soil content. At 5,100 meters, an Austrian Alpine hut offers overnight accommodation, and at 5,300 meters, a single piste ski lift operates. Rather than ski, climb to Chacaltaya's summit (slow going after driving up 1,500 meters, but guests do summit). Climb a neighboring peak as well, then visit Valle de Luna on La Paz's southern outskirts with grayish-yellow earth pyramids resembling the moon.
