- Day 1
Hanoi to Lao Cai
Head to Hanoi Train Station by motorbike for a short ride from the city center. Board an overnight train heading north toward Lao Cai, and you'll bring your motorbikes along for the journey. This gives you time to settle in and rest before arriving in the mountains.

Lao Cai to Sa Pa
Pull into Lao Cai Station around 5:30 in the morning. After grabbing breakfast at a local spot, you'll ride your motorbike up to Sa Pa, a mountain town about 350 kilometers northwest of Hanoi near the Chinese border. The drive takes you through rugged terrain with elevation changes that show off the northern landscape.

Sa Pa to Bac Ha
Start the day riding down from Sa Pa toward Lao Cai City, stopping for coffee along the Nam Thi river where you can see right across to China. From there, continue on to Bac Ha, a quieter highland town. Spend time checking out the local markets and visiting places where people make traditional home brew using local methods and recipes.

Bac Ha to Dong Van
Get your permit sorted out first thing for motorbike touring in border regions. Then tackle some challenging mountain roads through areas where hill tribes live and farm. You'll go up Ma Pi Leng Pass for the views, stop by Vuong Family's Residence to see traditional architecture up close, and walk through the old streets in Dong Van to get a feel for the area.

- Day 5
Dong Van to Ba Be National Park
Ride through Ha Giang's dramatic landscape and cross the Rock Plateau with views toward Meo Vac. After lunch, head south toward Bac Kan Province. Later in the afternoon, take a boat out on the Na Hang reservoir to reach a village near Dau Dang waterfall inside Ba Be National Park, where you'll spend the night.

Ba Be National Park to Hanoi
Get an early start with a boat ride across Ba Be lake. Then hop back on your motorbike and head south toward Hanoi on Road 3. Plan your timing to dodge the worst of the rush hour traffic when you're getting back to the city.
