Moshi to Machame
Start with a 2-hour drive from Moshi to Machame Village, then tackle your first hike to Machame Camp. This is a challenging 5-7 hour trek covering 10km with 1200 meters of ascent, so you'll reach 3000 meters/9843 feet. The terrain gets steeper as you go, but the porters will keep pace with you. After dinner at camp, you'll sleep at altitude for the first time and start acclimatizing.

- Day 2
Machame Camp to Shira Camp
From Machame Camp, hike 6km over 5-7 hours to Shira Camp. You'll gain 840 meters in elevation, bringing you to 3840 meters/12597 feet. The path continues upward through moorland terrain, and by afternoon you're settling into your next camp. Dinner and overnight rest prepare you for the longer day ahead.

- Day 3
Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
Cover 10km from Shira Camp to Barranco Camp over 5-7 hours. The good news is the ascent is only 110 meters, so this feels like a shorter day even though the distance is longer. You'll reach 3950 meters/12959 feet and spend time at camp acclimatizing further. The gentle gain helps your body adjust before the steeper sections come later.

Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley Camp
A shorter hiking day gives your legs a break with just 4.5km over 3 hours from Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley Camp. You'll cross above 4000 meters for the first time, ascending 250 meters to reach 4200 meters/13779 feet. This is a psychological milestone, and you'll notice thinner air more clearly now. Rest well at camp.

- Day 5
Karanga Valley Camp to Barafu Camp
Another 4.5km hike over 3 hours takes you from Karanga Valley Camp to Barafu Camp. Ascend 500 meters to hit 4700 meters/15420 feet, your highest sleeping altitude on the trek. The air gets noticeably thinner, and you'll feel the altitude more acutely. Eat well and hydrate constantly before the big summit attempt tomorrow.

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
This is the day everything builds toward. Wake during the night and begin your 5km summit push to Uhuru Peak, taking 6-7 hours to climb 1186 meters. Reach 5986 meters/19341 feet and catch the sunrise at the summit of Kilimanjaro, the highest point in Africa. After time celebrating at the peak, descend 12km over 5-7 hours to Mweka Camp at 3096 meters/10157 feet. You'll be tired but exhilarated by evening.

Mweka Camp to Moshi
Your final hiking day brings you down 10km over 3-4 hours from Mweka Camp to the gate at 1600 meters/5249 feet. After completing the trek, you'll drive back to Moshi in 2 hours to finish. This descent feels quick after days of climbing, and by afternoon you're back in town reflecting on the accomplishment.
