Asked on July 24th, 2024My sister and I wonder if you would do a short customized tour in the Apennines - about a week or so? Our father escaped from Campo 47 in Modena in 1943 and walked over the Apennines to Rome escaping the Germans and was helped by partisans and locals in the mountains along the way. What we would like to do is to get a feel for where he was - of course he and his fellow escapee kept to the ridges but we thought we would like to get as near as possible for a 73 and 71 year old. Some of the places which he skirted were Croce Arcana and Monte Cimone and of course many others in the vicinity. He mentions the iron cross which in the mist they thought at first was an anti aircraft gun! Are there little villages nearby where we could browse around or short walks ( both of us are fit). We are not luxury travelers. Two or three star is fine. We thought maybe start in Modena and then make our way down to Florence and get booked into a medium price hotel near the city centre there. From there we would be on our own. Please do help us as this has been our dream for ages. We have Dads original map given him by a local which shows the route they took and I could send it to give you an idea. We would only need to get roughly there and would be guided by any suggestions you have. We love outdoors, quaint villages and the unusual. Of course we are fascinated by the history.

We won't be able to do a tailor-made trip, but I've attached here the trip notes for our Italian Apennines guided trip, maybe this is something Janine would consider?
