Itinerary
- Day 1
Lima
You'll arrive at Lima airport and get transferred to your hotel. After the 2 pm welcome meeting, your leader takes you on a walking tour through downtown Lima. You'll see Plaza Mayor and check out the catacombs at Saint Francis Monastery. From there, head to Alameda de Chabuca Granda to try some street food like Peruvian doughnuts and mazamorra morada. For dinner, you'll eat at a restaurant that has views looking out over ancient ruins.

- Day 2
Lima to Puerto Maldonado to Amazon
Fly to Puerto Maldonado, then take a bus to the port and board motorised canoes into the Amazon rainforest. You'll watch for macaws, herons, alligators and capybaras on the way. After arriving at Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion, grab lunch at the lodge. Your guide takes you out on the Concepcion Trails, and later you'll join a guided twilight river boat ride to spot caimans. Dinner features ingredients from the local Amazon area.

- Day 3
Amazon
This morning you'll paddle across Lake Sandoval in a dugout wooden canoe, looking for red howler monkeys, giant river otters and colourful macaws. After lunch, explore the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, a 344-meter network of suspension bridges high above the forest floor where you might see toucans, woodpeckers, monkeys and three-toed sloths. In the evening, have drinks and snacks around an Amazon bonfire while a local guide shares jungle stories. You can take a night walk to see nocturnal activity or book a spa treatment before dinner with your group.

- Day 4
Puerto Maldonado to Cusco
Fly back to Puerto Maldonado and then catch a flight to Cusco, the former centre of the Inca Empire. You'll arrive early afternoon and head out with your leader to explore the city. Visit Plaza de Armas, then tour the Cusco Cathedral, which sits atop an Inca palace and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. A local historian guide shares insights into the building's art, architecture and history. You'll also visit the Coricancha Temple, once the most important temple in the Inca Empire. Your evening is free to check out Cusco's restaurants and live music venues.

- Day 5
Cusco
You have the day to yourself. Visit San Pedro market to bargain for goods and take photos, or go back to Plaza de Armas for another look at the cathedral. If you're interested, you can book an optional cooking class at a local restaurant using fair trade products, try a half-day trek at Inkilltambo to explore an archaeological site, or visit Sacsayhuaman fortress to see massive stone blocks and impressive Inca engineering.

- Day 6
Cusco to Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo
Travel through the Sacred Valley to Ollantaytambo, passing maize crops and terraces carved into the valley walls. Stop at AMA Restaurant in Urubamba, a social enterprise providing employment and training for single mothers. Have a snack and learn about their work in economic growth and gender equality. Meet the Willoq community to learn about local life, visit a textile workshop to see traditional techniques, and make your own bracelet with local women. You'll have a festive pachamanca lunch, then continue to Ollantaytambo where an expert guide shows you the archaeological site and discusses ancient aqueducts, irrigation canals, dams, terraces and centres of worship.

- Day 7
Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu
Board the 360 Machu Picchu Train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes. The high domed windows and open-air observation carriage give you incredible views of the Andes. Drop your luggage at your hotel, then take a bus up the winding road to Machu Picchu. Your guide leads you through the ruins and shares stories about its history. This 15th-century site is believed by most archaeologists to be the headquarters of Emperor Pachacuti and is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. You'll return to Aguas Calientes by bus.

- Day 8
Aguas Calientes to Machu Picchu to Cusco
Rise before sunrise and head back up to Machu Picchu for a second visit. Explore more of the architecture including temples, palaces and living quarters, with the forested mountain backdrop all around you. You'll see the mortar-free design that makes it earthquake resistant and the precisely cut stones with gaps so tight that a knife won't fit between them. Take the bus back to Aguas Calientes, then catch a train back to Ollantaytambo. From here, drive back to Cusco for the evening.
