- PTPamela· October 27th, 2016This was supposed to be a very special trip for my son, my friend, and I to climb to Everest Base Camp. We planned for this journey for a long time. Unfortunately, Ace The Himalayas did not come through as expected. As a company, or as a tour guide. In short, we were left high and dry to negotiate our own “emergency trip” out of Lukla on our last day. This was a nightmare! The owner of the company Prem, said that he was going to take his kid to the park and he would call us back later. I knew at that moment, he was not there for the client. Once he had our money, he was not going to be any help. Everything from that point was a struggle. Prem was extremely unprofessional and demeaning. He attacked our character and our integrity. Our tour guide, Borat was left without back up from his management so he too, was no help. Since Prem was out of a “family walk” and refused to help, I was left in Lukla airport, not speaking the language, with locals trying to sell us bogus helicopter trips, and spotty Wi-Fi. With the help of other stranded climbers, and after I called all the helicopter companies, I was finally able to negotiate our way out on the LAST helicopter of the day which I found because they were bring up supplies. We had l. Ace The Himalayas paid for it with the agreement that we would reimburse our negotiated dollar amount per person. We did as agree however, there was a remaining balance due to the email communication difficulties with the owner Prem. The part that makes me so infuriated is that instead of assuming his responsibility in the complicated Lukla – Katmandu helicopter transaction, as well as being the owner of a “reputable” company, he made our GUIDE pay for the disputed amount out of HIS OWN pocket! Now, if you have traveled around the world at all, you would know this would be an extreme hardship on the guide, and our Sherpa’s. It has been 10 months since out trip and I have tried hard to forget all the unpleasantness that accompanied our journey however, if I remember correctly, the disputed amount was around $167.00 USD each, for 2 of us. That is a huge amount for a single guide to have to fork out without it even being his fault or responsibility. Bottom line, the owner should have stepped up, assumed the responsibility as the company decision maker, and been done with it. It has been 10 months and I am still upset that he treated his employee with such disrespect and just past the buck. Before you go to Nepal, do some research. In my opinion, this is not the best company to go with. As far as the journey itself, we did have several pitfalls that I would have expected Ace The Himalayas would have been prepared for. An Illness, and an injury. We were extremely lucky that a guide with another company was with us most of the way along the trek. He helped us when it was needed. We are strong hikers and have climbed many mountains around the world but sadly, this was not our best trek, due to the tour company dropping the ball. Side note, we were left to hike several hours…alone! Good thing we knew what to do. A first timer might have gotten lost in the Himalayan mountains! Another note: make them tell you what hotel/hostel you will be staying at and do a thorough check on the place! You will be happy you did. Trust me. We choose to stay at our own choice of hotel which was the best decision ever. We also stayed in Nepal for a few weeks longer to do some other activities like visiting the Chitwan Jungle and horseback riding through the hills of Kathmandu. All of our other adventures were incredible. And ALWAYS get Travel Insurance! - PCPedro· October 27th, 2016I had always wanted to get to EBC. I made up my mind this year, end September 2016. I couldn't have chosen a better trekking agency. They are professional, reliable and have a great knowledge on site. I did Annapuras with Gyanu Batta, one of the members of APEX THE ASIAN HOLIDAYS back in 2006 and now I have done EBC. If I have to do any other trek o plan in Nepal I would not think it twice. Simply I do trust them.Show moreTrip date: September 2016
- SCSimon· October 27th, 2016My daughter and I were delighted with our private trek with Ace the Himalaya to Everest Base Campp via Gokyo in October last year. Our guide was energetic, entertaining, seemed to know everyone on the trail, and was very conscious of our safety all the way. Ace organised a great route and selected the best places for us to stay. When we wanted to change our walk itinerary a bit, it was no problem whatever. I would always use Ace again when I return to Nepal. Knowing that you are dealing with a local operator who has the sophistication needed to deal with any contingency was great.Show moreTrip date: October 2015

- D

Asked on May 26th, 2017Do I need to tip my guide and porters? How much would that be?
- D
Dale
Traveler•Written May 2017This is a difficult thing to gauge. We have seen everything from USD 20 to USD 1000 per person for guides and porters. Tipping is not required, but a small gesture of thanks to your guides and local porters. The level of the tip should reflect the level of satisfaction from and personal involvement with your guide. However, we recommend you to spend minimum 10% of your total trip cost for tipping entire local staffs, the ratio of tipping guide and porter will be given to you at the pre-trip meeting in Kathmandu before starting the trek.
