After that, head to the Port wine cellars to learn how they make the famous local wine. Spend time wandering the Ribeira district with its colorful buildings sitting right along the Douro River. Porto to Barcelos
Today you'll cycle Stage 1, covering 70 km/43 mi along coastal paths. You'll pass seabird sanctuaries and fishing villages before heading inland on the medieval Portuguese Way. The ride brings you to Barcelos, a town known for its pottery and religious history. Once there, check out the 13th-century Mother Church and learn about the Barcelos rooster, which is an iconic symbol in Portuguese culture.

Barcelos to Ponte de Lima
Cycle Stage 2 covers 34 km/21 mi on Queen Isabel of Portugal's pilgrimage route. You'll cross the Tábuas Bridge, which has been documented since 1135 and marks an important historic river crossing. Some sections along this stage might mean carrying your bicycle, so be ready for that. You'll reach Ponte de Lima, Portugal's oldest village, where the 24-arch bridge is really something to see. End the day with Arroz de Sarrabulho for dinner.

Ponte de Lima to Valença
Stage 3 is 36 km/22 mi and passes Montaria Waterfall near the Âncora River. The Labruja climb comes next with steep gradients, but the views make it worth the effort. Later you'll reach the Rubião Roman Bridge, an ancient three-arch granite structure that shows the area's history. Keep an eye out for red squirrels and herons along the way. The day ends in Valença, a fortified town where 17th-century walls give you panoramic views of the surroundings.

Valença to Pontevedra
Cycle Stage 4 goes north for 55 km/34 mi through the Louro River valley in Galicia. Stop at Monasterio de Santo Domingo viewpoint to see the panoramic views, then visit the medieval bridge of Pontesampaio where the final battle against Napoleon's army took place. You'll cycle through Pontevedra's well-preserved historic centre, known as the 'Good City' for its welcoming feel. Before finishing, check out the farmers' market there.
